Why is yoga un islamic? just a bit of information. if yoga is un islamic then what can we say about meditation? i do meditation time to time and it is very relaxing to mind, i dont see anything un islamic in it.

I think its to do with the word Om that most hindu yoga teachers make to recite as a warm up. but that is not necessarily the word to be used.. Any other word that relaxes you and brings peace to mind can be used..

but he has already said that muslim brother can use allah instead of OM.
also it is approved by devband that it is not unislamic.
it's like another version of excersixe like "namaz".
even some one from india has already given a "FATWA" in support of yoga.
:bounce:

Muslim scholar has just one objection in Yoga i.e. "Mantra ".now he has already said that muslims can use Allah and KALAMA instead of mantra as it is just a phase used at that perticular time.now problem solved here in india.

no it is not un-islamic .it is islamic.it has been discussed in various occasion in india even in devband too.
only objection the muslim scholar raised that during yoga any muslim should not use any "MANTRA" as it will deviate them from their faith.

no other objection they have other than this even they says it is good for health as this is a excersize and Yoga is same type of excersize that muslim does during NAMAZ.:smitten:

Yoga doesn’t contradict Islam, says Indonesian Muslim scholar (Lead)

Bali, March 3 (IANS) Yoga doesn’t contradict Islam and is a means to healthy living, a well known Islamic scholar said here Tuesday, barely weeks after a fatwa was issued in Indonesia banning Muslims from practising the ancient Indian technique.

Salman Harun, director of the Centre of Multi Faith Education in Jakarta, came out strongly in favour of yoga and said it simply teaches harmony and unity, and doesn’t believe in any religion.

At the International Bali-India Yoga Festival that began Tuesday, Harun said: “On the first day of this festival, I experienced what yoga actually is. It has nothing to do with religion and cannot belong to any caste or religion or community.

“I am of the very strong opinion that there is no contradiction between yoga and Islam,” he said.

The Indonesian Ulema Council (IUC), the country’s top Islamic body, had banned Muslims from practising yoga in January, saying those aspects of yoga which contain Hindu elements like chanting must not be practised.

Harun said: “Islam nowadays is portrayed as a religion of violence which is not true. The word Islam is derived from the Arabic word ’salam’ which means peace.

“Islam strictly prohibits insulting other religions and hates violence,” he said.

“Yoga is way of life and teaches one a healthy way of life. Indonesian Muslims should practise yoga,” Harun added.

Adding to that, Somvir, an academic who heads the Bali India Foundation, and is the key organiser of the eight-day festival, said: “In the past two years, I have taught yoga to more than a 100 Muslim and other students in my centre.

“The Islamic scholar who issued the fatwa in fact visited us sometime back and after seeing everything, said that Hindu elements like chanting in yoga should be avoided. Well, yoga is anyways beyond religion and anyone promoting it otherwise couldn’t be more wrong.”

Indonesian scholars praise Indian ulema for endorsing yoga

By Azera Rahman
Bali, March 8 (IANS) Many Islamic scholars in Indonesia agree with Indian clerics that yoga doesn’t contradict Islam and point to many similarities between the two. Their views are helping Muslims who practise yoga resolve their dilemma in the face of a ban on certain elements of the ancient health technique.

“I couldn’t have agreed more with Indian Islamic seminaries and ulemas who say that yoga does not contradict Islam. That is what I have been saying - yoga is just a means to a healthy living,” Salman Harun, director of the Centre of Multifaith Education in Jakarta, told IANS.

He said the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), which issued the fatwa against the Hindu elements of yoga in late January, does not represent the majority of the Indonesian Muslim opinion. Indonesia has the world’s largest population of Muslims.

Harun said better understanding of the art that yoga is would ensure that such steps are not taken in future. He was speaking at the first weeklong International Bali-India Yoga Festival last week.

Stefan Danerek, a scholar who has studied Islam and has also been practicing yoga for the past few months, went on to draw parallels between Islam and yoga.

“The ’salaat’, which is the ritualistic beginning of the Islamic prayer, and the ‘asanas’ are very similar. The concentration and focus required - and even the manner of praying in Islam - is similar to yoga. Therefore one can draw a lot of parallels between the two,” Danerek said at the festival.

Harun also said that herbal knowledge has been included in the Hadith, one of the holy Islamic texts, but has not been explored much.

“One should remember that the fatwa issued by MUI does not hold the status of official state law, which is the highest authority in the country,” he added.

For those like Fatima Andriani, a practicing Indonesian Muslim who learns yoga, the ban on certain elements of yoga had become a matter of great concern. The interaction with the scholars has however relieved her dilemma a great deal.

“I am a devout Muslim and I do yoga for exercise and a better health. The ban had come as a surprise to me because doing the asanas had not chipped my faith as a Muslim at all,” Andriani told IANS after attending the festival.

“But this interaction has relieved me a great deal - especially the parallels drawn between salaat and the yoga asanas.”

Danerek capped the debate, saying: “Yoga is halal. It is not bound by religious and other boundaries. And just like the holy Koran teaches, it spreads the message of unity and peace”.

Q) What's the ruling on yoga? is it a way of practicing Hinduism, as one Mufti has proclaimed? what if the instructor makes no allusions to religion, just helps us become flexible and relieve stress?

A) In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful and Compassionate

May Allah's peace and blessings be upon His Messenger Muhammad, his folk, companions, and followers

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

There are are a number of practices that are referred to as yoga. When yoga is practiced purely for the physical exercise element, then there is no harm in it. However, one needs to avoid the meditative and "spiritual" aspects, as a believer does not engage in the meditative and spiritual practices of other traditions.

And Allah alone gives success.

Wassalam,

Faraz Rabbani

Yoga is body science+spirituality...its up to a intellectual to use his own definition or way of spirituality.

what is the harm in starting surya namaskar with allah's name....dont be so sick...there is gud and bad in every system and yoga is the best in its category.

“Renowned yoga guru Swami Ramdev Tuesday sought to promote his method of keeping fit and dispel misconceptions about it at the gathering of clerics and followers at the historic Islamic seminary here”

“The first non-Muslim cleric addressed the annual convention of Islamic seminaries, of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind at the seminary, known for its influence over bulk of the Sunni Muslims across the country”

“It was high time people realized that ‘Ishwar’ and ‘Allah’ were two names of one and the only god,” he said.

Stressing the need to promote yoga, Ramdev sought to dispel misconceptions about the activity.

“Yoga is not related to any religion nor is there any underlying idea behind it to promote any religion,” he said, stressing it was a physical exercise to keep body and mind fit.

“He also gave a demonstration of his most popular “pranayam” exercises - “kapal-bhati” and “anulom-vilom”.

“Swami Agnivesh too drew much applause when he talked about banning liquor as well as urging Muslims not to recite Vande Mataram.”

Following is my comment on Yoga:

If truth does not prevail, popularity will fail. Most astronauts whether in USA or Russia and film stars do practice yoga.

I have been practicing yoga particularly breathing exercise, past several years and it helps me in several improved activities. It keeps me hale and healthy, and it boosts anti-ageing immune system and prevents multi-hormone deficiencies. Masha Allah,it keeps one at least 20 years younger and face looks always SMILEY.
It is all because the mind is always at its best.

This would be wrong to say that a Muslims should not practice Yoga, since it is a Hindu origin. Are sports like football, cricket, drills against Islam since they are not Islamic origin?

Yoga practice for few months under an adept is necessary. It gives complete control over the mind and body. Once one becomes master of his/her over his mind,he/she never becomes slave to its vagaries. Uncontrolled mind is just as untamed horse or rudderless ship. No aim or goals are achieved.
Those who don’t have the control over the mind, they have peculiar mannerisms in speech and body languages without their knowledge.

As far as the diet is concerned there is no restriction but a vegetarian diet is more preferred.

Yoga is not a drill or any sports which inculcates the sense of competition. Yoga teaches tranquility if the breathing exercise carried out regularly. Blood circulates over the body 25% more than the normal and it includes circulation to the brain too obviously. Marked memory power is noticed and will power is attained tremendously. With all these benefits how one can loseYoga?

Deoband intervenes: Muslims can do yoga

When clerics in Malaysia banned Muslims from practising yoga, they started a heated debate in the Islamic world. But Islamic scholars in India, including those at the Darul Uloom Deoband, say they do not find anything objectionable in Muslims practising yoga. Chanting mantras like Om that have religious connotation, they add, is not necessary for yoga and Muslims can replace them with verses from the Quran or references to Allah.

“Yoga is a good form of exercise. If some words, which are supposed to be chanted while performing it, have religious connotations, then Muslims need not utter those. They can instead recite verses from the Quran or praise Allah or remain silent,” Maulana Abdul Khaliq Madrasi, deputy vice-chancellor of the Darul Uloom, told The Indian Express.

He said he discussed the issue with yoga experts and they told him that reciting ‘Om’ or any other mantra was not compulsory for practising yoga.
