The unexpected announcement of the cost of the high profile defence deal had confirmed reports emanating from various sources that the price tag of the fighter aircraft has been finalised. Under the headline "strengthening defence capabilities while saving public money", the BJP said the deal to buy 36 state-of-the-art Rafale aircraft from France at 12 billion dollars (around Rs 80,000 crore) was re-negotiated and finalised at 8.8 billion dollars (around Rs 59,000 crore), resulting in saving of huge public money. An image posted on Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) official Facebook page said the Narendra Modi-led government "saved $3.2 billion (Rs.21,000 crore) out of the $12 billion (Rs.80,000 crore) deal".

"The deal to buy 36 state-of-the-art Rafale aircrafts from France at $12 billion (around Rs.80,000 crore) was re-negotiated and finalised at $8.8 billion (around Rs.59,000 crore)," the post, which has an image of Prime Minister Modi on it, said.

The defence ministry refused to comment on the figure.

On Tuesday, Minister of State for Defence Rao Inderjit Singh said most of the roadblocks in negotiations on the Rafale deal had been overcome and it is likely to go to the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) soon.

Earlier, sources said the negotiations over pricing had almost concluded, and the deal would be final soon.

The defence ministry has not officially quoted any figure for the deal for the fighter aircraft which is one of the most expensive in the world.

In January this year, both sides signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the purchase during the visit of French President Francois Hollande to India.

New Delhi: India's acquisition of 36 Dassault Rafale fighter jets have not gone under a smooth procession. But the government seems to have finally come across a decisive milestone in this colossal military deal.

In an image posted online on their official Twitter and Facebook page of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Modi government claimed that the Rafale deal had been finalised for $8.8 billion and had saved $3.2 billion in total from the negotiation.

After 36 rounds of negotiation pertaining to the acquisition of each Dassault fighter jet, the French government seems to have made in $8.8 billion (Rs 59,000 approx) from India, the final seal to the deal.

In the image, the BJP government claims that France-India negotiation had led to a savings of $3.2 billion (Rs 21,000 cr) from the $12 billion deal.

"The deal to buy 36 state-of-the-art Rafale aircrafts from France at $12 billion was re-negotiated and finalised at $8.8 billion," said the image.

Wasn't the 50% offset investment a part of the deal since the beginning?

And ToT was always a condition during the MMRCA competition right? Did the French provide details of what technologies they are willing to transfer, over what time frame?

The main reason for this 36 flown in directly from France is because of the delay in negotiation, the remaining 90 is still on track to be manufactured in India. @Abingdonboy can clear things up.

This was what was reported in the mid 00s but it is impossible to say if 126 MMRCA for $12BN was ever feasible because it al depdended on who became L1 and market conditions at the time. I am constantly seeing this "but we were going to get 126 jets for $12BN" but I can't fathom how anyone could honestly take that as certain and I'm not even sure of the orgins of that figure as I don't see the IAF haveing released it given the highly speculative nature of it.

The Deal was in the Range of 8-9 Billion $ since start... and considering NO TOT or Local Production this is a whopping cost considering 10 Bn$ was the expected price for a better deal (TOT, Local Production, Maint, 50% Offset) ...for 125 Fighters

BTW ..... Guess the BJP Twitter Handle Spoke Too soon ... the deal is Still in Final Phase of Negotiation (now the New Deadline is May-16) .... BJP is not telling tht the AC qty is diminished to a Quarter.. and they better now hope tht they get these 36 Aircraft for 8.8 B $ ... anything beyond 9.5 Billion and a new Pandora Box is gonna open !

Day after BJP claimed the Rafale aircraft deal with France has been "finalised" at USD 8.8 billion (Rs 59,000 crore), defence minister Manohar Parrikar on Thursday said it is not complete as yet but at an "advanced stage" and the intention is to "close it quite soon".

"I can only tell you this much that while the deal is in quite an advanced stage, and we intent to close it quite soon, I still can't say that negotiations are totally cleared until we sign the deal or at least the deal is forwarded to the Cabinet for approval," Parrikar told reporters here.

The deal is expected to be finalised by May end. India has been bargaining hard with France over the pricing of the 36 fighter planes, a deal that was announced first by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in April last year.
