Even within same ethnic group too lol blonde man in gore rang ka zamaana and model in the saanwla song are both from Punjab
Most of my maternal side have that blonde look too while father is brown/saanwala - and they're from same ethnicity and even clan too

I remember reading a study on this, and those with lighter skin were perceived as more attractive (for women)

White skin for women is of course a positive thing in term of attractiveness, but it is just one attribute of overall physical quality, there are others like face feature, shape of body, hair, and others. And there is different in magnitude of each attribute. I believe in term of physicality, men will choose pretty brown lady than average looking white skin lady.

That is just physical measurement, many mary women based on other things outside of physical quality. Some of my friends who are really handsome marriage with average looking women.

Racism as a whole is lesser compared to discrimination just on skin complexion. This comes from caste/economical status there is no way around it, where the more well off people didn't have to toil in the sun to make ends meet and thus were fairer than the ones who worked on the fields.
This in time ended up becoming a beauty standard, where every family wants their boy to bring in a fair wife; smartness, career, etc goes out of the window, thankfully though this is slowly and steadily changing with people preferring a wife who can lend a hand in supporting the family economically(yes beauty still applies obviously but not the main factor), especially in middle class societies.
I read somewhere same is the case in Korean/Japanese society where fair(er) skin is a symbol of being from a rich family and hence the discrimination based on that.
