Question for indians here, regarding Ramayana and Mahabharata

1. MOST of the educated and religious indians take it as true story. but the same people always questioned these two books for thier supernatural dramas.

2. They are very very old story... most of the Indians believes that they are BASED on true events but later supernaturalism has been added.

3. Read Mahabharata by ISKON and Ramayana by Tulsi Das.

Now what u should take from these two books: First of all read them as great novels or epics not religious books. you will find many things... almost everything about life. they teach how to be successful in lyf and for ur family and country. how to die when every person on earth will be proud on you.

There is something far beyond religion in these books... the greatest secreet... the secreet of becoming immortal... :)

This is possible.

BTW I have read both these books.

Mahabharata TV series by BR Chopra is the Classic and best among all. If you know Tamil, you can watch the Tamil version or you can watch one with English subtitles. Try to find it on youtube.

That is an awesome series, especially with such an ensemble star cast. My personal favorite was the guy who played shakuni mama. The way he used to manipulate duryodhan :cheesy:

I watched it again in college by downloading it from youtube. My parents say the new mahabharat which they are telecasting these days is also good.

Mahabharat is such an interesting story

90's mahabharata is far better than this. There are many things missing in the present one.
Agreed, the older once were more meaningful that is what i personally think, today i came across someone who had entire 'RAMAYANA' series of the 90's which is like 3.3GB long, curious to watch it :)

Thats true!!!

Every 15 years .. with change of time... we will see new Mahabharata... it never gets old.... none of them are bad... :)

Specially I liked the new one on Star Plus!!!

I wish they can make an epic movie on mahabharat, something on the scale of troy. Some hollywood director has to take it up though, indians will screw it up.

I still like the old one, the new version have too much overacting and deviating from the original story of the epic.

Not really, movie wont work, Mahabharata is too big.
And this is one story that needs to be done by Indians themselves.

It's going to be quite hard for someone outside of India to get a lot of things mentioned there. Also expect them to focus on negatives massively They will end up making slumdog pandavaas instead of Mahabharata :P

Here is a western attempt from 1989...kinda awkward

The recent star plus Mahabharata, although it had a large number of errors in the story, and lots of "masala" , did an okay job. I liked the ost, and the casting was pretty good imo.
Quite a few people I know actually decided to read the book after watching it. The graphics were also at paintshop levels in some places. But then the entire show had a budget of 100 crores and 250+ episodes to cover, so with that they did their best (in comparison...just one season of game of thrones has a higher budget). Maybe one day we will have a similar budget and a show that the epic deserves will be made.

Hollywood has no idea about Indian mythology, they can't make it. BTW I have seen folks from South Europe complaining that movies made on Greeco-Roman mythology features North European actors and such actors of North European origin who don't look like Greeks or Romans. :laughcry:

History of India before 600BC are recorded in Hindu religious texts but after 600BC we have Buddhists and Jain sources to verify the existence of Kings and kingdoms, so most probable they are based on true events and can't be rejected mere as a mythology. Moreover, Mahabharata gives very accurate description of the geography of ancient India and kingdoms and ancient people/tribes inhabiting them and many of such ancient place names are still in use. Anyway, two epics have contributed lot in shaping the Indian civilization and I really don't care if people believe them to be true or not, they are still very important for the Indian civilization.

What is meant by the texts in purple colour here, Sahya, Trikuta...
