Qualcomm has officially announced the Snapdragon 888 at its Snapdragon Tech Summit, offering a first look at its next-generation flagship smartphone processor. The 888 will power the next wave of 2021 Android flagships from companies like Samsung, OnePlus, LG, Sony, and more.

In a first for the company’s top-of-the-line 8-series chipsets, the Snapdragon 888 is making a big improvement for 5G: it’ll finally offer a fully integrated 5G modem, unlike last year’s Snapdragon 865 (which required that manufacturers include a separate modem chip inside the cramped interior of a modern smartphone).

The Snapdragon 888 will feature Qualcomm’s X60 modem, announced earlier this year, which jumps to a 5nm process for better power efficiency and improvements for 5G carrier aggregation across the mmWave and sub-6GHz bands of the spectrum. Between the new 5nm architecture and the power efficiency gains from an integrated modem, the new chip looks to offer some substantial battery improvements when it comes to 5G.

In addition to the 5G improvements, Qualcomm also teased several other advances coming to the Snapdragon 888, including the company’s sixth-gen AI Engine (running on a “redesigned” Qualcomm Hexagon processor), which promises a big jump in performance and power efficiency for AI tasks. The Snapdragon 888 also will feature the “most significant upgrade in Qualcomm Adreno GPU performance,” though specifics on what kind of improvements are coming have yet to be announced.

Lastly, Qualcomm previewed new photography features that the Snapdragon 888 will enable, including the ability to shoot roughly 120 photos per second at 12-megapixel resolution, thanks to the updated ISP (which is up to 35 percent faster).

Per Qualcomm’s usual practice, today’s announcement is just a first look at the Snapdragon 888. A more comprehensive overview of the specs and improvements being offered with this year’s chipset will arrive in the Snapdragon Tech Summit’s second day of keynotes, on December 2nd. And given Qualcomm’s near-total dominance when it comes to providing chips for almost every major smartphone in the US, the debut of the Snapdragon 888 isn’t just a first look at Qualcomm’s latest advances: it’s a preview of what to expect from phones like Samsung’s Galaxy S21 lineup and other top Android phones for 2021, too.

We’ll have additional details on the Snapdragon 888 tomorrow as the summit continues, so check back for more information soon.

Dude these phones are highway robbery. You have to be a true geek to use these machines to the max.

These phones are mostly used by Insta thotties and jocks to present a fake lifestyle, along with their silicone mamelar.

Otherwise even mid range phones are great.

Nothing wrong with a Snapdragon SoC.

My digital audio player is powered by a snapdragon, All be it a much less powerful one then this newest version.

I was aware of SD-875 not 888

. . .
Exynos has a higher perf per watt than qualcomm 755 and ,yet benchmarks make it look like a looser.
Qualcomm has entire teams setup to somewhat cheat the benchmarks or boost perf for high marketability games .

And itself will be dethroned by RISC-V within a decade.

How much one would wish , that wont happen , Opensource is rarely better than paid full time R&D
I personally am a proponent of opensource but lets be real.

Arm will soon dethrone intel!

AMD

Intel is already azz-kicked by AMD Ryzen and ARM will be begging for mercy in front of Risc-V in a few years.

Or buy a used flagship after 2-3 years. It gives great bang for the buck.

Only drawback is PTA's criminal taxes. They charge taxes based on the brand new price and not on the purchase price of the phone

Not looking good here
Are you just ignorant or lack of computer science knowledge?
kirin-990-5g September 6, 2019 (launched)
snapdragon-865 March, 2020 (launched)

There are 6 month gap.

Don't use nanoview as reference, it's a crappy website.

Here you go:

Kirin 990 beat snapdragon in every aspect.

Last but not least, Kirin 990 5G has 5G modem integrated, while Snapdragon is NOT. Such a loser.

Don't forget, Qualcomm is old US chip designer, while Huawei is a late comer, but surpassed Qualcomm in very single aspects.

Also US play dirty, I really despise you guys.

The Snapdragon 865 is designed to be paired with Qualcomm's 2nd generation 5G modem, the Snapdragon X55 5G modem (an external 7nm baseband chip produced by TSMC) and an RF front-end interface chip (RFFE) to bring 5G NR, sub-6 GHz, and mmWave support.

The 5G model of the Kirin 990 is one of the first SoC that fully integrates a 5G modem (Balong 5000) in the same silicon as the CPU and the GPU. The Kirin 990 5G includes a limited version of the Balong 5000 modem that supports Sub-6-GHz frequency but no mmWave (commonly used in the USA).

It is Trump that kill Qualcomm, not China, by kicking many of their clients out of their reach. Before Trump, Qualcomm expanded with Chinese clients like Huawei. But after Trump, they have to beat their own tongue because they lose a lot of potential sales just because Trump attack China. Well, I think Qualcomm is one of the victim of Trump's glorious trade war.

Kirin 990 out performed Qualcomm in every aspects.
Kinda wrong, and I have a P40 pro with that chip.

Also Huawei got ****** by the US. They won't be able to create any more chips because ARM ditched them.
Kirin 990 beat snapdragon in every aspect.
Wrong.

Each has their own advantages. By the way, you do know that Kirin 990 still got designed by ARM right? And now they cannot produce anymore chips because ARM is an American company

Qualcomm is not dead, not even close, they're still the main choice for most android smartphones, but now Samsung is going to be ahead with their new Exynos chip.
