LONDON (Reuters) - BAE Systems and Qatar have entered into a contract valued at around 5 billion pounds ($6.7 billion) for the country to buy 24 Typhoon combat aircraft, the British defense group said on Sunday.

The company said delivery was expected in late 2022 and that the contract was subject “to financing conditions and receipt by the company of first payment, which are expected to be fulfilled no later than mid-2018”.

At a ceremony in Doha British Defence Minister Gavin Williamson and Qatari Minister of State for Defence Affairs Khalid bin Mohammed al Attiyah, oversaw the signing of a deal which the British minister called a “massive vote of confidence, supporting thousands of British jobs and injecting billions into our economy”.

“We are delighted to begin a new chapter in the development of a long-term relationship with the State of Qatar and the Qatar Armed Forces, and we look forward to working alongside our customer as they continue to develop their military capability,” Charles Woodburn, BAE’s chief executive, said in a statement.

In September Qatar’s defense minister was reported to have signed a letter of intent to buy the 24 Typhoon jets from BAE in a move that could anger other Gulf countries boycotting Doha.

I wish we also had oil like them
Having oil is a cruse and not blessing. It will make you more lazy and go for the easy option which has short term gains but devastating effect for long term benefit.

Qatar will buy 24 Typhoon fighter jets worth $8bn from the United Kingdom as the Gulf state continues to stock up on high-tech weaponry.

The deal between the two countries was signed in Doha by Qatar's Defence Minister Khalid bin Mohammed al-Attiyah and his British counterpart, Gavin Williamson.

It is the biggest order for Typhoon fighters in more than a decade.

"These formidable jets will boost the Qatari military's mission to tackle the challenges we both share in the Middle East, supporting stability in the region and delivering security at home," Williamson said.

The deal for the Typhoon jets also includes training of air force personnel, the statement said.

The two countries also agreed to create a Joint Operation Squadron, the start of a partnership between Qatar's air force and Britain's Royal Air Force (RAF).

"The squadron tackles all air combat operations, ensuring combat readiness for all Qatari and British pilots and technicians," said the statement.

Qatar said on Thursday it would buy 12 Dassault Rafale fighter jets from the French aviation company in a deal worth $1bn.

Both deals come as the blockade against Qatar has gone on for more than six months.

On June 5, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates said they would cut all diplomatic and economic ties with the Gulf nation.

The countries accused Qatar of having ties to terrorism, strengthening its relations with Iran, and meddling in their internal affairs.

Qatar has denied all allegations against it.

good news. May Allah make our Arab brothers stronger.

but will any body answer me why our Arabs brothers do not make their own fighter jets, naval ships ,submarines etc?

Only Pakistan and Turkey are trying their best to make military hardware despite facing financial problems .

Our Arab brothers have oil and every thing then why they oxygenate the western economy by purchasing export versions unreliable weapons ?

It is their money so only they have the right to decide where and how they will spend. They don't need any advice from a third world economically poor country like ours despite the so-called Ummah Chumma.

We Pakistanis have a strange and indescribable attitude of speaking and thinking for others when our own situation is miserable. Their affairs are not our concern and we should stop making fools out of ourselves. For the last many days, Pakistanis have been judging the actions of Arab countries regarding the Palestine-Israel affair. It's just laughable and hypocritical when our own country is in a mess.

It's time to cure the "THAIKEDAARI" syndrome from which we suffer.
