Kachhi Canal project to be completed by Aug


LAHORE - WAPDA Chairman Lieutenant General (R) Muzammil Hussain has said that Kachhi Canal project will be completed in August 2017.

He said the project, which started in 2002, was almost abandoned due to grossly cost and time overrun for various reasons, adding that the federal government’s support and excellent work by the Wapda engineers has re-energised the project.

He said that the Wapda is planning to gradually release water into the main canal during the current month from its head regulator located at Taunsa Barrage in Muzaffargarh district to test the canal and its structures. Thereafter, water will be discharged to the distribution system for irrigation in August. He said that 72,000 acres of virgin land will be irrigated in August this year.

He said Kachhi Canal is a vital project to ensure economic development and social uplift in the far flung areas of Balochistan by promoting agriculture and agro-based economy. With completion of Kachhi Canal project, Balochistan will be able to draw its share of water from the Indus River System, people in the area will cultivate their lands and accrue the benefits, he added.

A special project for Balochistan
After 15 years, Kachhi Canal to be completed in August 2017: 72,000 acres of virgin land will be irrigated in August this year.
The water infrastructure and agricultural irrigation system in Balochistan will be achieving a true landmark as Kachhi Canal Project will be complete by August this year.

Will be a historic day for Balochistan and Pakistan when comepleted. So much excess water goes to waste into the Arabian Sea every year. Aside from the fact that this will hugely benefit our agriculture sector and food security+exports, this project will also help with flood management when needed by dispersing water through a far greater geographic area. With regards to the amount of water that goes to waste every year, see below. All in all I would say this is one of the most important infrastructure projects in Pakistan in recent times.

"Prior to the treaty (Indus Water Treaty) the total average annual volume of water flowing into Pakistan was 170 million acre feet - usually abbreviated as MAF. This is a measure of volume and one MAF is roughly equivalent to 1.23 billion cubic meters of water. After the treaty, India invoked its right to use the waters of the three eastern rivers and launched an aggressive program of dam building. And now these rivers, by the time they enter Pakistan, are dry. In the process Pakistan has lost some 30 MAF of water per year of the 170 MAF which flowed to us before the treaty.

Hence our annual water availability is now on average about 140 MAF which flows to us through the three western rivers. In good years, when there is a lot of rainfall, this rises to 180 MAF. In drier years it can be as low as 110 MAF.Now lets turn to how much water we use. The combined capacity of our system of barrages and canals is about 105 MAF. So, on average of the 140 MAF we get we dump about 35 MAF of water into the Arabian Sea every year. Of this about 30 MAF can easily be saved because at least 5 MAF is needed to maintain river system integrity downstream of the Kotri barrage. In other words we needlessly throw away about 20% of the water that flows into Pakistan every year."

Need more projects like Kacchi Canal... Baluchistan has vast swathes of flat, cultivable land, only thing missing is abundance of irrigation water. Pakistan is blessed with large natural rivers but unfortunately we waste a major chunk of it and let it flow to the sea. This needs to be used more judiciously to bring arid areas of Sindh and Baluchistan into agriculture growing areas.

Long-delayed Kachhi Canal to be completed this month

LAHORE: After a delay of more than one decade, the construction of Kachhi Canal will finally be completed by the third week of August, which will be followed by the filling of water to test the main canal and its structures.

Formal commissioning of the canal is scheduled to take place by the end of August with the release of water into the distribution system for irrigating 72,000 acres of land in Dera Bugti district of Balochistan.

These things were revealed by project authorities in a meeting presided over by Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) Chairman Lieutenant General (Retired) Muzammil Hussain. The meeting was held to review progress on the project.

Speaking on the occasion, the Wapda chairman pointed out that Kachhi Canal, work on which started 15 years ago, was almost an abandoned project because of certain reasons, gross cost overrun and long delays.

“It is indeed heartening to note that the project is finally going to see the light of day after a long period of 15 years,” Hussain said.

Kachhi Canal is of immense importance for the development of water infrastructure and irrigated agriculture in Balochistan. The project is being completed at a cost of about Rs80 billion.

The 363-kilometre-long main canal, out of which 351km is lined canal, starts from Taunsa Barrage in Muzaffargarh district of Punjab and ends in Dera Bugti district in Balochistan.

The discharge capacity of the main canal is 6,000 cusecs. As many as 914 structures have been constructed at or over the main canal including head and cross regulators, road and railway bridges, cross-drainage and escape structures, watercourse crossings, etc.

713,000 acres is huge...this project should have been been given the priority over other projects like Metro Bus and others.

Scope of Work The main objective of the Project is to provide sustainable irrigation water supply to 7,13,000 acres of agricultural land so as to increase agricultural production and uplift the socio economic condition of the inhabitants. In a significant development towards economic development and social uplift through irrigated agriculture in Dera Bugti / Balochistan, the Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) has completed construction of Phase – I of Kachhi Canal Project. Subsequent to filling of water, the Prime Minister is scheduled to formally inaugurate the canal in 2nd week of September by releasing water in the distribution systems to irrigate as many as 72,000 acres of land in the far-flung and backward areas of Dera Bugti district.
