Punjab Assembly Dissolved

Things moving fast and getting interesting....this breaking of PA has turned out to be master stoke by IK. If Mqm quits federal govt , President will ask Showbaaz Sharif to take vote of confidence in NA

Won't surprise me if PTI approaches MQM.

This would be the first test of the estab too and the new COAS.

They have put together this hodgepodge MQM, but would they force them to remain with PDM if a VoNC comes in the NA? Or will they let them to as they want?

MQM would also want to dissociate from the government now, as they have ALWAYS done right before elections in an attempt to white wash themselves. And no better opportunity than this.

Interesting few days ahead for sure.

There is silence, frustration and extreme shock in their tweets. Entire pdm pro media, are now blaming each other. Some of them putting blame on Nawaz sharif absence or someone now blaming Showbaaz Sharif for not going for elections in May.

They still cant believe that how Pervaiz Elahi and IK bamboozled them with vote of confidence.

The most sore loser in all of this is Saleem Safi.

Just look at his twitter feed, the guy has gone off the rocks.

What if SS fails to get 172 votes but in run of elections, he may get elected again due to majority votes?. Will run of elections gonna happen or country will directly go into general elections as per the rules ?

Run off elections only happen if there is an election for a new CM/PM.

For a vote of confidence you have to get a majority.

That is how I understand it.

Yeah thats my understanding too but there is some confusion. Shezhaib Khandaza on tv was raising possiblity of run of elections if mqm doesnt back SS as PM in VoC.

Kahin Nawaz Sharif ko is ky he lagaye huay Army Chief nay phir dhoka tu nahi dey diya ? :D

there is no run of elections in NA, if he doesnt get 172 votes thats it for NA, run of elections are only for provinces

The poster above says run off happens only for PA's, not NA.

As for Khanzada, I wouldn't trust the guy even if he says the sky is blue and water is wet.

Punjab Assembly stands dissolved as governor decides ‘to not become part of’ process

January 14, 2023

The Punjab Assembly (PA) stood dissolved on Saturday as Punjab Governor Balighur Rehman excused himself from the process, saying he could not become a part of the move.

A notification from the governor, available with Dawn.com, for the appointment of the caretaker chief minister was dispatched to Punjab Chief Minister Parvez Elahi and Leader of the Opposition in the PA Hamza Shahbaz. It said the PA and provincial cabinet stood dissolved under Article 112(1) of the Constitution.

According to Article 112(1), the assembly stands automatically “dissolved at the expiration of forty-eight hours after the chief minister has so advised” if the governor does not do it.

The notification said that the caretaker CM would be appointed by the governor in consultation with the two leaders. The governor called on them to provide the names of their nominees for the position by 10:10pm on January 17 (Tuesday).

The governor said that he remained available for the discharge of his constitutional duties if the two desired to call on him or have a meeting between the three.

Rehman earlier, after distancing himself from the dissolution process, said that he would “rather let the Constitution and law take its own course”.

“Doing so will not hamper any legal process as Constitution clearly provides a way forward,” he tweeted.

On Thursday, CM Elahi had formally advised the governor to dissolve the provincial legislature hours after retaining the confidence of a majority of lawmakers in the PA, in a session that began on Wednesday and ended in the early hours of Thursday.

The move caps weeks of speculation, legal wrangling and a public spectacle of the differences between the ruling allies in Punjab and the federal government over whether the assembly would be disbanded or not.

On December 17, PTI Chairman Imran Khan had announced that his governments in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa would dissolve their assemblies to pave the way for fresh elections.

Political activity gears up for elections

Meanwhile, PTI Vice President Fawad Chaudhry criticised the governor for removing himself from the process and said the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) would now be confronted in the political arena.
