Pune bans scarves while driving to check terrorism

PUNE: A ban on covering faces by women while driving motorbikes has irked several women's organisations in the city.

Satyapal Singh, who took charge of the City Police Commissioner last week has disapproved women covering their faces while driving.

The contention of Singh is that terrorists can take advantage of the practice to disguise themselves.

Many college girls and office-going women here cover their faces from head to chin to protect themselves from heat and dust while riding bikes.

A large number of women, including mayor Rajlaxmi Bhosale and several Women's organisations have opposed the police ban.

The controversy also hit the blogosphere with girls protesting the ban on blogs and social networking sites such as Orkut and Facebook.

Bloggers said that the practice was important to protect themselves from the rising pollution in the city.

Pune, which reportedly has the maximum number of two wheelers on the roads, is listed among the most polluted cities in the country.

A netizen on her post has ridiculed the assumption that terrorist commits crime by wearing scarves.

On his previous posting in Nagpur, the police commissioner had carried out a public campaign against female bikers covering their faces.

The long term solution is to improve air quality in the city so that women don't have to wear gloves and masks.

It does seem justified on security grounds.

Same as black tinted glass films are not allowed on cars in many cities. Why should it be an issue at all?

Yes, and the police feels that both can be used by terrorists, so they want to restrict that.

What could be the problem with that?

Recalling the Lal Masjid seige one of the Ghazi brothers tried to flee disguised in a burka.

Furthermore Hussein Osman one of the failed 21/7 bombers from London tried to do the same.

This is unfortunately the nature of some terrorists and if the police need to take such measures then so be it.

Admittedly I should have read it more carefully and it is scarves as opposed to burqas. I posted a bit too rashly then.

when u try to weed out a farm, u tend to pull the good crop too.. its just the case. in trying to restrict terrorist from using such tactics, we will have to enforce such laws. they are not against women protecting themselves from the heat and air.

With all this terrorism going on, indian police will have to get tougher. it is inconvenient for women to have to take off scarves, but the police are doing it to protect civilians, including these women. they should understand that and take it in good stride.

In the 70s, body searching was routine in israel due to large number of terrorist activities. the people endured it and as a result many terrorist plots were discovered before they could be executed. It'll be much harder to implement full body searching in a country like india, but security will have to be stepped up so that every two bit son of a ***** who knows how to make a bomb cant hurt innocents. and the people will have to bear with it. its for their own safety.

Police job is to serve and protect and with this policy thats exactly what they are doing.

At least, I believe it is not as bad as the slit eye Burqa that may be soon enforced if the Taliban enter the gates of the capital of the NWFP.

It started resembling a Burka when the aim behind using the scarf became the same as that of a Burka. i.e. not to disclose your identity. Otherwise there is no resemblance.

Scarves are used by ladies while riding 2 wheelers to save themselves from Sun tan. Considering the overall security environment, we all shall have to make changes in our lifestyles.

Now as far as Indian women are easy twith bans i have no problem with it
