Protesters on Friday assaulted Bollywood filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali at set of his film ‘Padmavati’ in Jaipur in Rajasthan.

The protesters alleged that “the film does not portray a Rajput queen in good manners”.

Activists of the Rajput Karni Sena shoved, slapped and pulled Bhansali’s hair, manhandled other crew members and damaged the sets at Jaigarh Fort.

The Rajputs alleged that the film has love scenes between Queen Padmini and ruler Alauddin Khilji, played by actors Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh respectively. They said the love scenes were ‘historically wrong’.

“Rani Padmini of Chittor had committed ‘Jauhar’ (immolated herself) to protect her chastity as Alauddin Khilji proceeded to conquer the fort,” said the protesters.

The Rajput Karni Sena demanded to delete such scenes in the film.

‘Padmavati’ is set to release on November 17 this year.

A politician affiliated with India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced an INR10,000 award for anyone who attacks filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali with a shoe.

Akilesh Khandelwal announced the reward in a post on his official Facebook page which has over 10,000 followers, Deccan Chronicle reported. His post garnered over 100 likes in just a few hours.

Khandelwal told journalists he did not regret what he had done. “They (such film personalities) are trying to distort our history to show us in poor light in public. We can no more remain silent. We consider it our responsibility to rein in such forces,” Khandelwal said.

Terming his post “provocative,” the Indian National Congress, the nation’s chief opposition party, demanded action against the BJP leader. “Saffron leaders have taken up the role of moral police,” a party spokesperson said.
