Man Aman Singh Chhina profiles the 21 SF, the Indian Army unit that raided Naga militant camps deep inside Myanmar early on Tuesday to inflict ‘significant casualties’ on those who killed 18 soldiers of the 6 Dogra on June 4.

The regimen of a Special Forces operative is vastly different from that of a regular soldier — much tougher, and which does not end with the initial training at the Special Forces Training School in Himachal Pradesh.
For a battalion like 21 SF, training and adapting to new fighting techniques is an ongoing process at in-house modules as well as at the Counter Insurgency and Jungle Warfare School, Vairangate, Mizoram.

Like all SF battalions, 21 SF have to be adept at combat freefall from fixed wing aircraft or choppers. They must practise various modes of entering and exiting hostile territory on foot, vehicles or by air, and undergo freefall training with special parachutes.

Heliborne operations, like the one carried out in Myanmar, are the mainstay of any Special Forces battalion — troops are inserted and picked up by helicopters. The forces practise for such operations with Army aviation helicopters or IAF choppers.

For actual operations, assault teams are used. These are smaller in size and better equipped than sub-units of regular infantry battalions, and they train much harder too. Forced marches with 60 kg loads is not uncommon for an SF soldier. The SF assault teams are trained for unconventional and asymmetric warfare, and for survival under extreme conditions.

Yep! One of the many SF located in the East, they are experts in jungle warfare and are trained at CIJWS (Counter Insurgency & Jungle Warfare School) in Mizoram, India. Considered one of the finest outfits in jungle & guerrilla warfare.
Dont post the gyaaan if you dont know the difference between a special force and a special unit.

Please put me wise since I don't know the difference between special forces and special unit! Play of words? Thanks.

P.S Since you are so knowledgeable, I suggest you take the time to read link below, para 4. COBRAS who are one of the SF of India. Special Forces encompasses all specialized commando units whether from the Army, Navy, Air force or central police forces or para military forces.

Dear Sir,SF is a unit which is not bounded by regions and can conduct operations anywhere it wants to.They specialise in more than one kind of warfare. They are directly in contact with the intelligence agencies like RAW and MI.They are a force multiplier and only higher ups can give them a call.

COBRA is a special unit for naxals bounded by a region are not to be used elsewhere.Their training is at best equal to infantrmen of Indian Army. They are doing a good job but they cant be called special forces.

Mere bhai, the Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (COBRA) is the only Indian special force that is specifically trained in guerilla warfare.

Ok, enough of nitpicking! COBRAs are a Special Force of the CRPF. Period. But you're right when you say that they have been specifically trained for ops against the Naxals.

he is talking about the true special forces(internationally acceptable standred) in india even police units are called special forces. Cobra is police special unit they are police version of "rashtriya rifles".

There are only three special force units in India as recognised by the MoD/GoI:

-Garuds
-MARCOs
-PARA (SF)

All other units from CAPFs/Police are specialist units which includes the NSG, SPG, COBRAs,Greyhounds etc etc etc

My man, that is exactly the difference between a Special unit and a Special Force.

If that was the condition wont RR qualify to be a Special Force?
