Poverty in China is a lie: rethinking poverty in China

Why don't you donate?! You can afford to donate $1 Aussie Dollar.

If you want to donate, go through PLAN.org. They are reliable non religious and no political b.s. You could also do one off donations like feed a kid in Cambodia for a year ($29) if you cant spare full sponsorship.

.
And there is a culture of acceptance of welfare programs ; its a stark dichotomy of how its seen in Japan. In Japan, anyone that is in these programs see it as a source of shame. In fact, many Japanese who lose their jobs and are forced to go into welfare programs become easily depressed, quite a few commit suicide because of the shame. In the United States, I don't think there is this cultural trait that we see in Japan.

I don't know the statistics. There is this impression that most welfare recipients are actually children of welfare recipients. So it is a generational thing that many grew up with and simply accepted as a part of normal life. They are given little incentive to change.

.
I want to but I'm feel hesitant. Reading some members in this thread, it seems like there is zero poverty in China.

So I'm afraid those "poor" children are really just scammers and are just collecting money to buy a BMW.

ha ha ha ! no, silly, not BMW! They use money to buy the new Land Wind ;)

.
This thread is B.S.

Who is poorer than who is the same as saying I have more money than you.
Its hard being poor, I was there but the happiest times of my life was when I was poor.

Respect your fellow man for his virtues, not his wallet.

Dear God! $29 is a lot of money! I can donate $2.90, tho.

lol

Honestly, between you and I, the event that i had to go into that...i'd prefer to cut myself open than to live in such a shame.

No, those Land Wind is only marketed to the poor expat community. Citizens buy legitimate BMW and Mercs.

You are already living that life. Living a life of a graduate student on a stipend is pretty much the same as living on a tight welfare handout, isn't it?

1. To be honest the Land Wind looks nice. I would love to try it out, honestly. LOL!

2. Stop trying to make me depressed?!

.
Well most are single moms between the ages of 20 to 30. Not much we can do about it.

Hmm, this is an issue in the African American community, is it not?

Sad to see what happened to their family dynamic tho...

There seems to be this impression by many that if you are not married with kids by 25 you are a failure. So many do the kids route so they feel they are not a complete failure...of course going on welfare does not seem to be part of Iheir failure equation.

Truth lies here in World bank report. We have not down poverty line to 0.24 USD to reduce poverty like china did in past.

Look what world bank has to say:

The World Bank has set the global poverty line at $1.25 a day at present. But, this was calculated on the basis of the 2005 PPP index. By that measure, India had about 400 million poor people in 2010. The revision of the PPP indexsuggests the Indian economy is much bigger and the purchasing power much higher than estimated earlier. It also means that the number of poor people is much lower than estimated earlier. The bank is revising the poverty line to adjust it to the changed index but early calculations by economists suggest the number of poor people in India is set to dwindle, statistically speaking.

India's poor may shrink 75% by new World Bank formula | Business Standard News

So it is 98.9 Million against 400 Million of China.

Aside from India downwardly revising its poverty line to achieve those bogus numbers, the truth of the matter is obvious when you look at Human Development Index comparisons. The Human Development Index (HDI) is a comparative measure of life expectancy, literacy, education, standards of living, and quality of life for countries worldwide.

List of countries by Human Development Index - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

China is at #91. Certainly room for improvement and I believe China is tackling the issue head on. In fact, China improved 2 places compared to 2013. Meanwhile, India is at #135 with no improvement in sight. Because India would rather screw around with its definition of the poverty line than actually make sure it isn't poor. It's the Indian way. Jai Hind! ;)

@HariPrasad Care to explain the glaring differences in life expectancy, literacy, infant mortality, and living standards between China and India? Obviously, China, with 400 million! poor people would be much worse off in every conceivable ranking than shupahypapowa India with only 90 million poor people and so many white servants. And yet...and yet...HDI rankings tell a starkly different tale. Why the huge difference in China's favor? Could it be that China constantly raises the bar for poverty because China wants to truly eradicate poverty while India revises its definition of poverty in the opposite direction because India cares more about "looking good on paper" rather than actually making sure its people have toilets, food, and basic education? Naaah... :pop:

By the way, if India went by that new World Bank Formula, and China went by the same formula, China would still have less people under the poverty line. Because China's economy is 5 times larger than Indias. India still loses. :disagree:

Precisely. For me, i believe that if a person cannot provide himself or herself with a decent job, housing, how can they expect to care for another life? But that's my own personal bias.

lol, China is included in "East Asia and Pacific". Even retarded monkey can figure this out. You're so poor that you have as many poor as nearly 2 billion East and Southeast Asians and that's with a generous cutoff rate for you.
