A man was caught doing hand party and eventually brought to Hazrat Umar R.A our second Caliph of Islam. No exact Islamic punishment existed for this act and Caliphs council was divided on how to deal with this issue. There was confusion , anger and bemusement among the people in the council.

Those that were really animated and “outraged” suggested to have his head chopped off because he brought bad name to the tribe, to the Muslims and the Mankind at large. This suggestion was rejected to be too harsh and excessive.

While some suggested to have his Jonson (tool) chopped off because that was the source of the evil action he committed. Again it was rejected for being absurd & unkind.

Undeterred some suggested to have his hand chopped off because it was the hand that was used to perform the hand party. That too was rejected for being equally absurd and excessive.

The punishment couldn’t be excessive but had to be something which was a lesson and preventative from doing something like that and that too in a place or position when someone else might catch the offender.

They all must have started speaking and shouting simultaneously when the Caliph R.A told them to be quiet and decided to consult Hazrat Ali R.A. despite what Muslims of today say Hazrat Omar R.A was never shy to seek council from Hazrat Ali R.A he was always available to advise the Caliph as a religious and social obligation.


Hazrat Ali R.A came with a solution which didn’t involve beheading or amputation. After the nod and amused approval from the Caliph He requested a stick and hit the offender’s hand few times until it turned red and then he arranged for his marriage through the bait Al Maal (Islamic Bank/ charity).
