Ningxia Hui autonomous region in northwestern China, which has a large Muslim population, has banned all of its police officers from drinking alcohol under any circumstances, on or off duty, according to a local government notice.

The “Ningxia public security organs alcohol prohibition order”, issued a few days ago, was published on the official Weibo accounts of several police stations across Ningxia.

The notice said that any member of the policecaught drinking alcohol, whether they were an officer or an auxiliary police worker, would be “investigated and strictly dealt with according to regulations”.

“This prohibition order not only bans us from drinking alcohol over the Lunar New Year period, but has no definite end date. Now it looks like it will be in place long-term,” an anonymous auxiliary police officerin Ningxia told Shanghai-based news outlet Thepaper.cn on Wednesday

Another officer, from Ningxia traffic police, confirmed to Thepaper.cn that he had received the notice on February 3.

Those tightened guidelines had targeted the traditional culture of boozy office banquets in state firms, as part of President Xi Jinping’s high-profile anti-corruption drive. Expensive drinks such as Mao-tai were commonly presented as gifts or served at official gatherings, which tarnished the image of Chinese government workers, claimed state media.

That's what I afraid of. When they are in minority, they demand the tolerance; when they become the majority, they want to impose their laws to everyone else.

.
Even Chinese military banned consumption of alcohol even off duty. Implementation of.this rule.is difficult but They Have taken a good step

.
Well onduty drinking is not allowed anywhere in the world i think. This is not new

This shouldn't be allowed to be in force. Are they trying to carve out a new country? Should we not make it drinking a compulsion when in Beijing or Shanghai on or off duty?

Police officers are civilian, and they are private citizens when off duty so they should have the same civil rights like everyone else. IMO, this policy is unconstitutional in any secular society, and I expect lot of noise about this new Ningxia policy on China's social network.

Ningxia's peculiar position as Chinese "Muslim's heartland" is noteworthy, therefore it might be a religion oriented policy. If this is the case, it violates the principle of "Separation of Church and State" of a secular country. This policy may backfire.

They are banning alcohol today, and they may ban pork tomorrow.

That's what I am afraid of to. Give them an inch and they'll take a mile.

They are talking about off duty too though. Apparently this is a "dry zone" for special favours to a demographic constituent.

Any we even have some Muslim complain about Hans oppression of them especially those from turkey. @MMM-Æ @cabatli_53

So what is this? Hans Chinese being oppressed?

When you try to please everyone, you please no one. China should just make one set of rules and enforce it everywhere. No special favours....special favours are slippery slope.

We dont have laws against drinking in pakistan although we are a muslim nation. Most of our policemen and high ranking officials army commanders are casual drinkers even though we think we are a muslum nation. Why does china care so much ... This much is too good to be true and unrealistic

Be urself. If you are not a muslim why not drink? Don't chinese muslims undersrand that non muslims are not bound by laws of the Almighty?

Or may be it is like what my parents used to do. Since i was young i could eat in ramadan and not habe fast (som/roza) so my mom dad would day don't eat food during day time infront of my friends or cousins who have som/roza are fasting so that they wont feel bad.

May he chinese are just being extra nice.

But realistically chinese don't have to do this.

I agree, if this news is true....it is wrong for China to do because what is to stop another X Y or Z imposing something else somewhere else?

It just comes off as artificial in the end....a bandage for grievances that should be resolved better way.
