POF and French Company signs MOU on rocket technology

LONDON, Sept 8 (APP)- Pakistan Ordnance Factories and a French company signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on upgrading the capabilities of 122 mm rockets used by the Pakistani armed forces on the sidelines of the Defence Systems and Equipment International Exhibition which opened in East London Tuesday.

The MOU was signed on behalf of POF by its chairman Lt.General Shujaat Zamir Dar and by David Quancard, president, Roxel company, which is a leading French company dealing in rocket technology. Federal Minister for Defence Production Abdul Qayyum Khan Jatoi was also present on the occasion.
The contract when materialised will help Pakistan armed forces to enhance the firing range of the present stock of 122 mm rockets in its arsenal from its current range of 20 kilometres to 40 km and beyond.

The French company chief sales executive Francis Rodriguez speaking to the media said the present Pakistani rockets are equipped with the Russian technology and are quite outdated and once actual agreement is signed with his company, the induction of new technology will not only increase the range but make the weapon more lethal and effective.

He said POF is manufacturing defence equipment of international standard and his company trust the Pakistan technology and is happy to assist POF in bringning further new advancements.

Rodriguez said since the induction of a democratic government in Pakistan, its relations with France has deepened and both President Asif Ali Zardari and Nicholas Sarkozy are keen to see that these are further consolidated in all fields particularly in the defence sector. France is already a major defence supplier to Pakistan including Mirage warplanes and submarines and other equipment for its forces.

Pakistan in International Defence Exhibition
LONDON, Sept 8 (APP): The four‑day Defence Systems and Equipment International Exhibition opened in East London Docklands on Tuesday with some 1300 exhibitors representing forty countries including Pakistan.

Pakistan Ordnance Factories has set up a stall which is attacting lot of queries from potential customers keen on the small to medium arms. The items on display at the stall include weapons, machine guns, small arms ammo, bombs and grenades, medium artillery ammunition, explosives, propellents, tank and anti‑tank ammunition and protective clothing.

The POF products also include aircraft bombs, rockets of different varieties, mortar bombs, anti‑aircraft gun ammunition while the commercial products comprise different grades of brass rods, pipes, sheets, emulsion explosives, blasting accessories and denators.

There are 27 pavillions with Brazil, Croatia and Portugal making their debut. A total of 53 prime contractors from around the world are showcasing their latest capaabilities while there are 300 companies in the first time exhibitor zone, underlining DSEi’s importance to SMEs in the defence and security supplier community.

\Moored besides the exibition halls are naval ships from the Netherlands and the UK including HMS Somerset, a world leader in the anti‑submarine warfare environment. Some leading exhibitors during the course of the event will give half an hour presentations on their latest developments covering subjects such as ‘combat clothing for the future soldiers’, ‘breathable atmospheres in AIP and nuclear powered submarines, and ‘new position sensing technology for harsh environments’.

Pakistan defence products in great demand


Federal Minister for Defence Production Abdul Qayyum Khan Jatoi has said the country’s defence products have gained international recognition and are in great demand but lack of necessary funds is preventing Pakistan Ordnance Factories from further enhancing its production capacity

Speaking to the media during his visit to the stall of POF established at the Defence Systems and Equipment International Exhibition which opened in East London Docklands Tuesday, the Minister said Pakistan is exporting small and medium arms to the Middle East, Africa and south Asia and due to its low cost but high standard, the ordnance is in great demand.

“We could increase our production capacity at least five times, but for that we require substantial funding of which there is presently a dearth,” he said.

The Minister said Vietnam and Kenya are the latest countries to seek arms from Pakistan and agreement in this regard could be signed soon. He spoke of strong defence relations with France and said Pakistan already has several agreements with the European country.

Jatoi said the Government is fully aware of the requirement of its defence forces and has taken many steps to meet them. He said defence of the country could not be compromised or lowered at any cost.

The Minister also mentioned that during the course of the Defence exhibition, Pakistan will endeavour to seek fresh markets and thereby increase its defence exports.

Pakistan High Commissioner to the UK Wajid Shamsul Hasan who was also present on the occasion said the world has acknowledged the professional competency of Pakistani defence products and the defence industry is making big strides to attain further technological proficiency.

Defence Attache Commodore Asif Saleem said the participation in Defence events help the Pakistani defence industry to inter-act with other leading manufacturers and seek new knowledge and information about various equipments.

He mentioned that in 2008 Pakistan Defence exhibition held in Karachi, as many 22 UK firms participated which benefitted the Pakistani defence contractors and manufacturers. Associated news agencies
