Different ongoing development projects of PMSA are as follows:
  • PMSA’s proposal of induction of 06 x Maritime Patrol Vessels (MPVs) has been approved by the Government. The contract shall be awarded soon after completion of formalities.
  • CPOs/ Sailors barracks/ mosque/ Guard Room and a dining hall are under construction at PMSA Base RISHAD at Pasni.
  • Work is in progress to upgrade Ops Room of HQs PMSA to make it a modern and completely digitized Ops Room.
  • Proposal to establish PMSA bases at Keti Bandar and Ormara has been approved by the Government. Construction work will start soon.
  • Case for construction of a wharf for berthing of PMSA units has been taken up with the Government for approval.
  • Case has been forwarded to MoD for construction of PMSA residential complex in Karachi.
  • Case for construction of sea front facilities including slipway, jetty, basin and navigational channel at PMSA Base RISHAD (Pasni) is under process.
  • A case for construction of a boat ramp/ slipway near HQs PMSA for hoisting and repair / maintenance of Fast Response Boats is under process at MoD.
  • Case is being pursued with Joint Staff Headquarters for allocation of 30 acres of land with sea front in Joint Cantonment Gwadar for operational use of PMSA.
  • Case for transfer of PNS BABUR to PMSA as PMSS NAZIM has been approved. The ship would be joining PMSA as PMSS NAZIM after completion of formalities. The induction of PMSS NAZIM will further strengthen PMSA and the security of Karachi Harbour.

Can someone tell me what PSMA is?

PMSA Stands for Pakistan Maritime Security Agency. It is one of the six Paramilitary Forces of Pakistan.

Mission
"To assert and enforce national jurisdiction and sovereignty in the territorial waters/ contiguous zone and to protect Pakistan's economic interests in the Exclusive Economic Zone/ Continental Shelf of Pakistan"

Assigned Tasks
Enforce National and International laws, agreements and conventions in the Maritime Zones.

Prevent unauthorized exploitation of economic resources within the Maritime Zones.

Protect Pakistani fishing vessels and crew against any threat within the Maritime Zones.

Assist and co-ordinate Search & Rescue of the vessels, property and lives in distress at sea.

Assist and coordinate with national and international agencies to prevent and control the effects of marine disasters including pollution.

Assist and co-ordinate with national and International agencies in hydrographic and oceanographic research and other scientific activities.

Assist other departments and agencies in safeguarding and protecting offshore installations/structures in the EEZ.

Provide assistance for petroleum and other mineral exploration in our Maritime zones.

Co-operate with and provide help to other departments and agencies at sea in the discharge of their duties and functions.

Perform such other functions as may be assigned by Govt to protect maritime interests of Pakistan.

Basically the same job as the Coast Guard...

I dont see a reason to make another branch.

All well and good but , about that PNS ship, is it about those Type 21s? If yes, then please let those go, they have been used too much now.

This is not the first time a large navy surface combattant was transferred to PMSA. The previous PMSA Nazim was an ex-PN ship, PNS Tughril (167), obtained from the US (USS Henderson, DD785). It was a Gearing class destroyer, but I don't recall it being actively used by PMSA (it sat mainly in Karachi). Will this be different with the transferred PNS Babur?

This is not the first time a large navy surface combattant was transferred to PMSA. The previous PMSA Nazim was an ex-PN ship, PNS Tughril (167), obtained from the US (USS Henderson, DD785). It was a Gearing class destroyer, but I don't recall it being actively used by PMSA (it sat mainly in Karachi). Will this be different with the transferred PNS Babur?

I think PMSA is going to use it as a Off-shore Patrol Vessel, after removing weapon systems & other undesired electronic suite..

Well, it is one thing to use it as a floating office/accommodation/base and another to actually sail it on patrol ;-)
Dedicated boats, like the American cutters or other MPVs (6 being purposed) will be MUCH better then these old ships. Smaller yet efficient for the job, lesser man power and most importantly, much cheaper to operate. I hope PN PMSA do not go down that route again. Nice little dedicate platforms like OPVs will be way better plus we already have plan to induct those MPVs now.

Well, that depends on where you have to patrol (esp. how far out to sea). That's not necessarily limited to the (extended) EEZ (think e.g. anti-piracy patrols)

Yeah, also it depends on what country we are talking about. We wont have funds to operate or procure heavier frigates or destroyers and do so in numbers for anti piracy patrols. That burden have to be shared by Navy frigate fleet. Also the OHP is frankly not much good in its current form other then being used as a heavy patrol boat for long distances. That will ease up the pressure on the Navies front line fleet. Also i do not think we will be comitting more then one or max 2 boats for this role. That is what make me say that for Pakistan, dedicated smaller MPV and OPVs are best suited. These are more efficient and burns up lesser fuel. Easier to maintain and cheaper to operate is one thing that we should be looking in our MPV. Utilize them together with the OHP for long range patrol and some support from the navy vessels and that will make do.
