Noted author Arundhati Roy today alleged that theNarendra Modi-led government was “promoting Brahmanism” in the name of “Hindu Rashtravad”, and word like “intolerance” is inadequate to describe the “fear” in which the minorities are presently living, prompting protest from right-wing activists, who dubbed her an “anti-national.

Irked by Roy’s presence at a function here, where she was presented an award instituted after social reformer Mahatma Jyotiba Phule, activists ofBJP’s student wing, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) staged a noisy protest at the venue.

After receiving the Mahatma Phule Equality award, she claimed the word “intolerance” is inadequate to describe the “fear” in which the minorities in the country are now living.

Slamming the Modi government, she alleged it was promoting “Brahmanism” in the name of “Hindu Rashtravad.”

Roy, a Booker Prize winner, also alleged that the BJP was trying to “glorify” social reformers in the country as “great Hindus” and cited Dr B R Ambedkar as one of them, though he had left the Hindu religion.

“The history is being re-written and national institutions are being taken over by the government,” she further alleged.

Raising slogans against Roy, ABVP activists called her “anti-national, pro-Pakistan and anti-Indian Army”, before they were rounded up by police.

The ABVP, in a memorandum handed over to the organisers, Mahatma Phule Samata Parishad, alleged that Roy, by her “anti-national” stand, had hurt the sentiments of all Indians.

On the occasion, NCP leader and former Maharashtra minister Chhagan Bhujbal said the BJP need to learn its lesson from the Bihar Assembly polls result and Prime Minister Narendra Modi should control the party’s “fringe elements” indulging in “intolerant talks”.

it is understandable that that such a slogan would be objectionable to anyone desirous of a secular and future-looking system... the same logic should be applied to abvp whose parent body, the bjp, had a equivalent election slogan in 1991 - "aap ka vote ram ke naam"... it's recent one slogan has been "ram lalla hum aayenge, mandir wahin banayenge".

then what is the role of various bjp central ministries that have to do with human resources, food distribution, poverty alleviation, employment etc??

why didn't bjp government take the hunger-deaths in darjeeling tea estates on top priority on coming to power in late may 2014?? did the bjp government even bother about this issue?? does it even now??

you seem to be combining mamata and the cpi-m to remove the central bjp government from the blame list but let us remember that mamata and the wb communists are opponents and mamata was the national railway minister in the 1998-2004 bjp-led nda alliance government.

as for blaming communism, little communist cuba, younger than extremely capitalist india, is far far ahead in human development measures than india and most other countries, so you should not blame communism/socialism but the faulty policies of the former "left front" government in wb.

So according to Ms. Smarty Pants, a low caste son of a tea seller and a housewife who washed neighbors utensils to make a little extra money, wants to promote Brahminism. What would any low caste person gain by doing that?

It is hard to believe that she is living in fear in a mansion in South Delhi while regularly traveling around the world to write and speak against the government, not only in India but in enemy countries as well, yet no one has harmed a hair on her head...so what is she scared off? That she is getting old and ugly and people will stop paying attention to her? That her lies have been exposed and no one believes her anymore? That India and Indians are doing better despite ( or because of ) not following her advice?

She is an attention junkie and lives to make outrageous statements simply to be in the news plus she has nothing else to do...she got through several husbands, no real work, no solutions to anything ...just protest about everything..this woman is a total waste of space and oxygen.

I think you have no idea of federalism, Darjeeling is not the only place in india, there are many places where such incidents happen, in the south there are many farmer suicides, so can a prime minister go to every nook and corner of india, and do the job of state govts. By your logic all state govts should be abolished , there should be central rule then if modi doesn't perform I would never vote for him, for the past decade I have been in SFI and many other trade unions they are back stabbers and useless, they do nothing.
