PM Modi likely to visit UAE on August 16-17

ISIS threat may figure in PM Modi's talks with UAE leadership | Zee News

Abu Dhabi: The issue of ISIS threat is likely to be part of talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UAE leadership which considers the terror group as a major threat.

Modi will arrive here on Sunday on a two-day visit, the first by an Indian Prime Minister in 34 years, and will hold talks with the leadership of world's second largest Arab economy.

When asked whether the issue of Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) will figure in the talks, official sources said UAE sees the terror group as a major threat and will take every measure to counter it.

The Prime Minister will kick off his visit by paying a visit to Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, a key place of worship which is considered one of the largest mosques in the world.

A key centre of Islamic culture, the mosque is known for its architectural masterpiece of Islamic architecture design. Constructed from 1996 to 2007, the mosque can accommodate around 40,000 people.

After visiting the mosque, Modi will meet a group of Indian workers here.

During his overnight stay here, Modi will also travel to Masdar City, a zero carbon and hi-tech city created as per concept of cleaner and greener tomorrow.

During his visit, Modi will seek to enhance cooperation in energy and trade and reach out to investors to promote India as an attractive business destination.

Given that late Indira Gandhi was the last Indian Prime Minister to have visited United Arab Emirates in 1981, Modi's trip is being seen as an opportunity to boost India-UAE ties in key areas of trade and security.

New Delhi: Narendra Modi will begin his two-day visit to United Arab Emirates (UAE), a first by an Indian Prime Minister in the last 34 years, on Sunday.

During the two-day visit, Modi will address the Indian diaspora, hold talks with the leadership of world's second largest Arab economy on terrorism and seek to enhance cooperation in energy and trade and reach out to investors to hardsell India as an attractive business destination.

The prime minister will reach Abu Dhabi today and go to Dubai on Monday.

On the first day, Modi will hold official talks with the leadership of Abu Dhabi and later visit Masdar City, a city project in Abu Dhabi where he is expected to spend time watching presentations, the external affairs ministry said.

Later, he will meet business people and focus on investments. The following day, he will first visit the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi and then travel to Dubai where, after meeting Dubai's ruler, he will attend a grand public reception hosted for him at the Dubai Cricket Grounds.

Ahead of the visit, Modi on Thursday said in a statement that the UAE was a valued partner and the extent of bilateral ties indicate the vibrant relations the nations enjoy.

"India is the UAE's second largest trading partner and the UAE is India's third largest trade partner," he said.

Modi said the over 2.5 million Indians who have made the UAE their home "contributed immensely to the progress of the UAE and also gave back to India at every occasion.

"India and the UAE are fantastically connected, be it via air or through the sea."

He also praised the economic progress made by the UAE. Modi said that during his visit, he will seek to enhance cooperation in energy and trade and talk to investors on why India was an attractive destination to invest.

"I am certain my visit will boost people-to-people ties between our nations. I specially look forward to meeting the large community of Indian workers based in the UAE," he said.

Narendra Modi's visit of strategic importance to UAE: Minister | Zee News
Last Updated: Sunday, August 16, 2015 - 17:32
Dubai: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi`s visit is of "strategic importance" to the UAE, Foreign Minister Shaikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan said in remarks published on Sunday.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has also placed India at the forefront of its international partnership from a foreign policy and regional security perspective, the minister told the Khaleej Times.

The UAE "recognises the importance of broadening a comprehensive dialogue with India that deepens and diversifies our areas of engagement", he said.

"There are particularly strong opportunities for UAE-India security cooperation in combating terrorism, which both our governments condemn in the strongest terms in all its forms and manifestations, as well as in the maritime domain."

Modi left for Abu Dhabi on Sunday for a two-day visit to the UAE which will take him to Dubai on Monday. He is the first Indian prime minister to visit the UAE in 34 years.

"The UAE and India have a robust economic relationship, which is underpinned and sustained by various bilateral agreements we have signed over the last years," Shaikh Abdullah said.

He said Modi`s visit "comes at a time when relations between the UAE and India have never been warmer.

"The prime minister`s visit is of strategic significance in our bilateral relations and follows on the heels of growing diplomatic, economic, energy and defence cooperation between our two countries."

The minister said the UAE "feels strongly about the need to counter extremism and incitement to violence, and has recently passed legislation that bans hate speech and the promotion of violence.

"India shares our concerns over the rise of extremism. The barbaric ideology that extremists embrace threatens values that the UAE and India hold dear, and both our countries have a mutual desire to see the region and the entire world free of the scourge of extremism."

India is the UAE`s second largest trading partner. The UAE is India`s third largest trading partner.

The minister said his "deeply values the important contributions that the large Indian community living and working in the UAE has made to its economy and society".

He said the over 950 direct weekly flights between the UAE and India showed the strength of people-to-people and economic ties between the two countries.

"We look forward to further facilitating the movement of people and expanding aviation ties between our countries in the years to come."

He said the UAE looked forward to the next meeting of the UAE-India Joint Committee - a key platform for dialogue - on September 3, 2015.

"Our shared values and strong bilateral ties provide an important basis on which the UAE and India can elevate their relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership.

"Prime Minister Modi`s visit provides an opportunity to chart a new course in our partnership for the 21st century.

"We look forward to a productive exchange of ideas covering a wide range of economic, political and security issues of mutual interest," the UAE minister said.

Regional issues best solved by countries involved, says PM Modi in UAE | Zee News
Last Updated: Sunday, August 16, 2015 - 21:01

Abu Dhabi: Making a strong case against "outside interference" in the Middle East, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said regional or bilateral problems are best solved by the countries involved.

"Saddened and worried" to see violence and instability in the Middle East, Modi in an interview to Khaleej Times said, "I have always believed that regional or bilateral problems are best solved by the countries involved."

" We have often seen the consequences of outside interference," he said.

Noting that India is uniquely blessed to have good relations with all countries in the region, Modi said his country has always abided by the principle of non-interference in other nations and has consistently supported dialogue as a means to resolve all issues.

"I strongly believe that the problems in this region can only be addressed by the collective efforts and constructive engagement of all countries. Regional peace and stability is in the interest of all. I always advocate this approach to every country in this region and others who have stakes here," Modi, who is here on a two-day visit, said.

"When we have such serious problems of terrorism and extremism as we see in the region, it is incumbent upon all nations in the region to work together to address this common threat to regional stability, peace and prosperity," he said.

Talking about the nuclear deal between Iran and the world powers and its implications for India's economic and geo-political interests, Modi said, "We have always advocated a peaceful resolution of the Iranian nuclear issue through dialogue in a way that advances peace and stability in the region."

"We hope that the nuclear agreement will not be a cause of instability in the region, but will start a process of consultation and cooperation in the region that will enhance mutual trust and confidence, and lead to durable peace and stability in the region," he said.

Reiterating that India has close civilisational relations with Iran which span centuries, Modi said India has strong economic and energy interests in Iran.

"Iran is also important for India's connectivity with Afghanistan and Central Asia," he said.

The world powers -- the United States, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany -- and Iran on July 14 struck an agreement under which Tehran will curb some but not all aspects of its nuclear programme in exchange for a lifting of international sanctions that have pulverised its economy in recent years.
