Recalling the barbaric carnage, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Friday alleged that then prime minister Khaleda Zia staged the August 21, 2004 grenade attack as carrying out killings is their habit.

“Returning to power, Khaleda Zia staged the grenade attack. Those who’re involved in the conspiracy of August 21 grenade attack during interrogation later mentioned that Khaleda Zia’s son Tarique Rahman was also involved in that conspiracy,” she said.

Sheikh Hasina made the allegation while addressing a discussion marking the August 21, 2004 grenade attack. Awami League organised the event at its Bangabandhu Avenue central office. The Prime Minister attended the event virtually from her Ganabhaban residence

She said it was not possible to carry out an attack like that of August 21, 2004 had there been no direct patronage from the then BNP-Jamaat government.

Sheikh Hasina said the then BNP-Jamaat government assembled the terrorists and militants in one place, provided training for waging such an attack and gave them a safe passage to flee abroad.

"They (BNP-Jamaat government) thought that I had died (in the grenade attack), but when they came to know that I didn’t die they allowed the militants to flee the country," Sheikh Hasina said.

After the attack, she said, police lobbed teargas shells and charged baton on Awami League leaders and workers instead of rescuing the victims.

The premier said even BNP-Jamaat-backed doctors did not attend the injured Awami League leaders and workers at Dhaka Medical College Hospital and no patient was allowed to enter Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Medical University as it was closed.

"If they (BNP-Jamaat) had not been directly involved in this attack, had they put barricade this way (getting treatment, nab the culprits and destroying evidences)?" she questioned.

The Prime Minister alleged that carrying out killings was their habit as they do not believe in the country's independence and they did not believe in the Liberation War spirit. "Power for them was a tool to make money through corruption," she said.

In this connection, Hasina mentioned that the venom tree that was planted by the BNP-Jamaat clique, Bangladesh is still suffering from that. "After assuming power, we’re uprooting those one by one."

Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader also spoke at the program joined by senior leaders of the party.

The barbaric grenade attack was carried out on an anti-terrorism rally of Awami League on Bangabandhu Avenue in the capital on August 21, 2004 during the BNP-Jamaat government aiming to wipe out the AL leadership.

Twenty-four people, including then president of Mohila Awami League and late president Zillur Rahman’s wife Ivy Rahman, were killed and over 500 others suffered splinter injuries in the grisly attack and many of them became crippled for life.

Sheikh Hasina, the then opposition leader, narrowly escaped the attack but sustained hearing impairment due to the impact of the repeated grenade blasts near the truck-dais of the huge public rally. AL men saved her life creating a human shield surrounding her during the attack.

Referring to some remarks made by Khaleda Zia before the grisly grenade attack and planting of twin bombs — one of 76 kg and another of 84 kg — in Kotalipara, the prime minister said, “Before every attack, Khaleda Zia used to say Awami League won’t be able to go to power in 100 years. And right before the grenade attack, she said even Sheikh Hasina can never be the leader of the opposition, let alone the Prime Minister, as she knew beforehand, I would be killed on August 21,” she said.

The then government destroyed the evidence of the gruesome attack while an army officer lost his job as he wanted to preserve an unexploded grenade used in the attack, she said. “They tried to erase all the evidence of the attack.”

Sheikh Hasina said one army officer wanted to keep one unexploded grenade for evidence and the then Khaleda Zia government sent that officer on forced retirement.

"And all know about a staged drama by the government," she said pointing to the Joj Mia issue which was later proved false.

The prime minister said the ruling BNP-Jamaat did not allow Awami League to discuss the matter in Parliament although many of the injured were MPs and she was the leader of the opposition.

It was not the end, Sheikh Hasina said, they were hatching a conspiracy to kill her son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, after kidnapping. It was revealed by US FBI in their investigation.

A BNP leader there was accused and convicted. The names of BNP leaders Mahbubur Rahman and Shafiq Rehman also came up in the verdict.

But rather than taking sides, one can still say that choosing the path of violence for BNP was a very foolhardy move.

All politicians loot money. But going into murder and mayhem is a bad idea. Hanging people for getting even is also a bad move, even if you justify it with a Kangaroo court scenario.

And someone should tell the PM that her bookshelf is in need of repairs, probably a Covid-caused situation, I'm guessing.

It was a state sponsored terrorism .Former DGFI chief also got death sentence , but my question is , can DGFI do anything without the order of Prime Minister ? Simply no . Because they are subservient to civil administration and simply they were obeying order , and if they refused to obey the order , then they would be expelled from job . So if anyone is eligible of capital punishment , then it's only former head of govt who was directly responsible for this crime .

Tbh if anything she gave mercy to Khaleda and her son, I remember being a kid and my mom was taking me to a coaching but the road was empty, we only came to know of the attack from the rickshaw puller

But why not for her mother ? If we gone astray in childhood , is it our own fault , or fault of parents ? When Tareq chora used to commit crimes ( as a kid in politics) , did Khaleda zia ever take any action ? No , but she simply provide him back up.

But if you give death penalty to Khaleda Zia , it will look like political reason , so is that the reason criminals should be exempt ? have you read the story where a son was thief and mother encouraged him by over looking his crimes ? Later when the son was convicted and sentenced death , he simply wanted to whisper to his mother , and later just bite her ear . Upset mother asked the reason ,and son said , "If you punished me for stealing instead of remaining silent , i would not have get jail punishment now " .

So @DalalErMaNodi bhai , think with fresh mind . What was Tareq Rahman actually without his mother ? So who is the main criminal? Surely in such cases head of the sate is the main criminal , not others .

I am sure no one is allowed in that space now and it was a temporary thing. Old people are dropping off like flies in Dhaka right now. I heard of at least a half dozen older people passing in the last few weeks.

I'm sure she can have that bookshelf replaced in about three minutes if she wanted.

BNP shot itself into their own foot by engaging in these sort of violence. The grenade attack had BNP written all over it - every tom, dick and harry knows that in BD. Moreover, they tried to disrupt the 2014 election by petrol-bombing random people on the street. Again, every tom, dick and harry knows that in BD.

You can surely blame Hasina for an one-party style ruling. But how did she reach this point? Only if BNP didn't get involved in violence and stayed on the streets like any normal party would, BNP's popularity would not have waned and they would have remained a strong opposition in Parliament with good influence. Khaleda's actions made sure the average people in BD would dislike BNP. And that showed when no one gave a rat$ a$$ when she calls for blockade, strike etc. Sure, many people dislike AL for mainly their India-leaning policies too but do the people have any option after you freaking petrol-bomb them?

You can foul cry democracy all you want but the only one to blame for BNP's current backbone-less state is themselves. Khaleda is lucky that the average people didn't beat her up or her often-drunk politicians. Hasina has put her away on a mere graft case. You think someone of her power could not have done worse? Again, Khaleda is lucky that she can sit in prison with amenities and still do make-up.
