QUETTA / KARACHI:

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has emphasised having a 25 to 30-year plan to not only cover its current power shortfall but to also generate 50,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity to meet its future needs. He was speaking to reporters during his visit to Pakistan Power Park, Gadani, and Quaid-e-Azam Mausoleum in Karachi.

“The electricity shortfall in the country demands that we go ahead in power generation without wasting a second,” he said, adding that the billion dollar project in Gadani will provide jobs to the people of undeveloped areas, along with benefiting the whole country.

Nawaz said that while the government had resolved the issue of circular debt, it could rise again if difficult decisions are not taken.

“After payment of debts, the country was able to generate 1,700MW of additional power. A total of 16,170MW of electricity was recorded on Wednesday, something that has never happened in the history of Pakistan,” the prime minister remarked, adding that the current electricity demand was 19,000MW.

“The government has to overcome a shortfall of 3,000MW and also make policies for the next 25 to 30 years, to meet its future needs,” he said.

The prime minister instructed to extend the eight projects of Pakistan Power Park to 10, in order to generate 6,600MW of electricity. The first project will be installed by the government itself.

Nawaz said that Chinese investors wanted to set up four projects in the park, which will also be set up in Thar.

“Although the currently available coal in Thar is of low grade, we can bring in machinery to generate power from the same coal,” he said.

Talking about the Neelum-Jhelum Hydropower Project, Nawaz said the project will produce 950MW of electricity, but added that it was regrettable that due to poor policies in the past, its cost had escalated from Rs45 billion to Rs250 billion.

The prime minister also announced to build a six-lane motorway from Karachi to Lahore.

Speaking about Kashgar-Gawadar Trade Corridor between Pakistan and China, the premier said that small industrial zones will be set up all along the route and it will be facilitated with highway and railway system that will attract investment from China, as the cost of production in Pakistan was still low. He said that construction work on Diamer Bhasha Dam, Dasu Dam and Bunji Dam will soon be started and will add to the power production of the country.

Speaking about the law and order situation in Karachi, Nawaz said that law and order is the responsibility of the provincial government.

“We are not indifferent to Karachi’s situation and it will take time to devise a comprehensive policy. He added that he had asked the chief ministers of the four provinces to form committees on law and order situation, in order to give recommendation for devising a policy on militancy.

To a question regarding Pak-India relations the premier said, “We want to have good relations with India. It is our wish to boost trade with India and resolve all issues including Kashmir.”

He also appreciated the efforts of Fakhruddin G Ebrahim for holding clean elections in the country and wished that he would continue his work as the chief election commissioner. He also refuted rumours of governor rule in Sindh and asked for joint efforts of all the political parties for the development of the country.

The prime minister’s delegation included Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, Minister of State for Water and Power Abid Sher Ali, Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah and others. They were welcomed by Balochistan Chief Minister Dr Abdul Malik Baloch at Gadani.

So far Nawaz govt is on right track. They haven't done anything that I may disagree with. These guys are awesome and truly honest and dedicated in resolving current crisis. I hope people understand this and give nawaz sharif the courage and strength he needs right now. Unfortunately, some leaders like ilzam khan cant digest the fact that nawaz sharif has brought so much to the table. He is trying to spread anarchy instead of resolving his provinces issues. Class one idiot

Putting political differences aside, good luck and God speed, Mian Sb!

Energy crisis is massive strain on our economy and well being.

GADANI, Aug 1: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said here on Thursday his government had prepared a 25-year long-term plan to generate 50,000MW power to end the energy crisis and meet future needs of the country.

Addressing a gathering after attending a briefing on the Rs60 billion Pakistan Power Park to generate 660MW electricity, the prime minister said a number of measures were being taken to address the power crisis.

He said the project would also help generate employment opportunities for the people of Sindh and Balochistan. A similar power park needs to be set up in Thar to utilise its huge reserves of coal. Mr Sharif said the government had resolved the issue of Rs480bn circular debt, but added that it could rise again if difficult decisions were not taken. He said the country was able to generate 1,700MW of additional power after this payment. The total generation reached a record 16,170MW, with the shortfall declining to 3,000MW and the demand standing at 19,000MW.

The prime minister was informed that the power park would include eight projects of independent power producers and generate 660MW. The project will have a dedicated jetty to provide access to ships for an LNG terminal.

Prime Minister Sharif said future plans included construction of coal-based plants which could produce 5200MW of electricity. Gas-powered plants will also be set up to meet the growing energy needs.

He said the Neelum-Jhelum hydropower project would also produce 950MW. He regretted that because of inefficiency and poor policies in the past, the cost of the project had escalated from Rs45bn to Rs250bn.

Referring to the Kashgar-Gwadar trade corridor, he said small industrial zones will be set up along its route to attract investment from China because the cost of production in Pakistan was still low. The corridor will help generate huge business opportunities for the people of Pakistan because they will have access to over three billion people in the region.

About the motorway proposed to be built between Karachi and Lahore, the prime minister said the six-lane road would ensure swift and economical transportation of goods.—APP

Our Staff Reporter adds: Prime Minister Sharif said the PML-N accepted the mandate of the PPP and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement in Sindh under a spirit which was needed to strengthen democracy and curb extremism.

“With this spirit we can beat extremism and put the country on road to progress and provide relief to the common man. We need to respect each other and make democracy a success story,” he told reporters at the Quaid’s Mazar after offering Fateha. It was his first visit to Karachi after becoming prime minister two months ago.

The prime minister ignored a question about the bitter history of relations between the PML-N and the MQM with reference to the visit last week by a delegation of the former to Nine-Zero to seek support for presidential candidate Mamnoon Hussain. He only said that “we would have to move forward with all parties which enjoy people’s mandate”.

Answering a question about the law and order situation in Karachi, he said the government was aware of the crisis the country’s financial capital was facing and it would take time to come up with credible policy for a lasting peace in the city.

“We need to raise a counter-terrorist force. Terrorism is an issue of the entire country. I personally talked to the chief ministers and asked them to come up with proposals in this regard. We will take the provinces on board while framing any policy against terrorism,” he said.

About the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner retired Justice Fakhruddin G. Ebrahim, he said: “It was my desire that he would have continued his office, but he thought it appropriate not to work further. His services for the 2013 elections will always be recognised.”

In reply to a question about relations with India, he said talks should be resumed from the point where these had been abandoned in 1999 when the Lahore Declaration was adopted. “India is our neighbour and better relations with it will lead to increased trade and resumed dialogue on crucial issues, including Kashmir dispute,” he said.

The prime minister was received at the Karachi airport by Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan and Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah.

This is not an excellent project:
1. Thermal power is not preferable because of the environmental issues and cost; even Thar coal is not that cheap especially when you consider the transportation from Thar to Gaddani, and if you import coal, it will be more expensive- any thermal plant (if any, as they are not desirable for the environmental disaster they can bring) should have been near Thar;
2. Renewable energy is not given the biggest share in the park, if given any;
3. the government has ignored wind power, Gaddani and all the coastal areas near Karachi are excellent wind corridors- the wind has not to be dug out, it is a fuel totally free and all year available in our coastal areas with minimum fluctuation possible anywhere in the world.
4. time frame is unrealistic, 25 years for 50,000 MW is too much- If wind energy is considered, we can produce 100,000 MW on our barren but incredibly windy coastal mountains within 5 years. With the right planning we can build and install thousands of wind mills in incredible time. The technology is expensive but mastering and buying it will not take 25 years.
Alas!! why our politicians are so selfish and why our public so naive!:hitwall:

I wish if you have done some research before posting this then it would have been good... Let me start from correcting you...

1) China/India produce over 50+% of electricity from the coal, and these projects mainly considering around more than 70% electricity from hydro, solar and nuclear. considering them most environmental friendly project (Only Nuclear waste is a problem other than that they are completely environment friendly). But even it was 100% environment non-friendly, we need first power to reach to a level to start speaking about green energy. yet your objections means nothing..
2) Read my previous post.
3) Wind power is the most expensive way to go, and only developed country think about wind power. Most economical ways for Pakistan are hydro, solar-thermal and nuclear which is a clear vision of this government.. so should be appreciated. We simply don't have enough money to start thinking about "Wind" or Solar photonic energy.
4) First we need to fix current shortage, once that problem is solved then we can think of other ways, such are Wind, solar photonic, and other costly eco friendly systems..

PS: it's just your thinking, this new politicians do know how to make use of intelligent minds under them. That's why current government is only concentrating on three stages cover up... short term, long term...

Edit: My favorite cheapest power concept is this.. Solar Updraft Towers

These are easy to build, and most cost effective. The only consideration is the space required for these towers. By 2016, most of the develop country will start moving towards this concept. Since Our government is aggressively looking for energy resources, they can consider this to be a option.

I wish if you have done some research before posting this then it would have been good... Let me start from correcting you..

What research would you like me to do?
1. Thermal is neither the best nor the quickest means of power production.
2. There is the mention of thermal generation; where is the tangible plan for solar and nuclear????
3. Nuclear fuel is neither easily available nor accident friendly, leave aside the environment issues which for us Pakistanis is as remote as ones death,
4. environmental issues like death by slow poison; it is inevitable, it will come one day and then one will not be able to do much about it. Now is the time to address the environmental issues.
5. The costs for a utility scale wind turbine in 2012 range from about $1.3 million to $2.2 million per MW after installation, which slightly above other means, but you have to pay it only once, then you have the free electricity ( with operational cost) which can be as low as 5 rupees per unit. this is not the case with Thermal or even nuclear power. If government adds- let's say -20,000 MW in fifteen years years, it seems a realistic target.
6. You can Install wind mill in very short time, so any argument for short term is rubbish; moreover, there is no visible long term renewable energy plan.
7. The consumers' bills? when will you reduce it? Only renewable energy in long term will allow poor Pakistanis use some power. Otherwise most of them will remain in dark forever.
8 The solar power is welcome, the issue is unwise thermal generation for future.
Thanks, if there is any other research, I am open to it.

I need help in understanding something that I have observed recently.

Ever since his Election, every picture of Nawaz Sharif shows him with a Frown or a Pssed off look.

Why does Nawaz Sharif always looks so Pssed Off ?

Anyone knows ?

On Topic, For the long term Power generation Pakistan should focus more on Hydel because it is the cheapest form Power generation available in Pakistan and it saves Foreign exchange and also building Dams upstream will control Floods and provide water during off peak season needs.

The second best long term Power generation is Nuclear.

Wind and Solar are more expensive.

I kinda notice that too Prof  maybe he's afraid that the military might overthrow him again

I'm not worried about energy much as Pakistan is said to receive an energy-package from her bestie friend :yay:

what ever makes you happy.... But Facts are ...

1) No Serious industry build Wind Power towers for commercial use. When it comes to Solar numbers are thousands. Installation cost is way higher, and power production isn't constant. Wind installation cost is always higher then other means. Not available everywhere...
2) Nuclear are the cheapest (after installation) and higher output per acre. And can be build virtually anywhere, that's Karachi/Hyderabad are getting 2 of them.
3) Pakistan contains world 1% nuclear fuel, which is enough to generate more then 25 GW for more then 200 years. There was some news, US firms are already digging in Peshawar. Otherwise, kazarkistan is Pakistan's neighbor. With newer technology like Pebble Bed can improve the safety measures.
4) Coal is the fastest way to build a power plant, with highest capacity. The first Coal power plant was build in 18 century, and technology trend is, the older the technology easier to deploy. (Environmental factor is another thing)

5) Hydro is out of the question, this is the cheapest way to get power. So all projects should be admired.
