I wouldn't go so far as calling it a psychological problem but this incessant reminiscing about a romanticized notion of a past that most probably never was is perhaps linked with the desire to forge a 'unique identity' and to stamp our presence on the canvas of the world.

We Muslims look to the many Muslim Empires that existed here and try to imagine some sort of a Golden Age of Islam here in the Subcontinent and connect it to the larger Golden Age of Islam that happened in Andalusia, North Africa and Baghdad where intellectual, cultural and spiritual genres of their time reached their zenith many....many centuries ago. History on the other hand tells us that such would be more in the realm of 'desire' than 'reality'.

The Hindus on the other hand try to recreate the idea of a Mahabharat (Great India) in their minds and them as the scions of a great civilization that would rival - nay, eclipse the intellectual and cultural pursuits of the Greek Civilizations of the Antiquity Era. Unfortunately such Greatness may exist more in fables drawn from religion and less in history than we have the heart to admit.

We're just not ready to accept that barring brilliance here and there; the mythology of a grand past is just that 'a myth' !
