Turkish-Indonesian KAPLAN medium tank

The Philippines and Bangladesh are likely to order about 100 KAPLAN medium tanks which are co-produced by Turkish defense contractor FNNS and Indonesia's PT Pindad.

Windu Paramata, the head of the medium tank project at PT Pindad said the two countries had expressed willingness to buy 40 to 50 units each.

"In October, we will be demonstrating medium tanks there, as a condition for the procurement of defense equipment in their countries," Paramata told Anadolu Agency on Friday.

Paramata said the Indonesian Ministry of Defense was considering purchasing the KAPLAN tanks and ministry was still evaluating the number of units to be procured.

Paramata said the Indonesian Army's Research and Development Agency had certified the medium tank earlier this year.

Paramata praised the Turkish-Indonesian battle tank as featuring the most recent technology in the global defense industry.

Poland followed suit in producing a similar tank, Paramata said, adding, however, that the country was still at the concept stage.

Paramata said the medium tank is suitable for use in countries with only two seasons in Southeast Asia, such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and the Philippines as well as in four-season countries as it can operate at a maximum temperature of 50 degrees Celsius, and at a minimum temperature of - 30 degrees Celsius.

The tank turret is different, but both are CMI Defense turret. Current variant doesnt have RWS but it has machine gun on the left side of the turret. Maybe they think RWS is not needed since you can still be inside the tank while shooting using machine gun.

Nope, but this tank maybe is designed with APS in mind.

Any amphibious capability for this one available in the future? Or any other variants based on the same hull/trackage having amphib capability?

The tank turret is different, but both are CMI Defense turret.
This tank uses the Cockerill XC-8 120HP High Pressure gun for NATO rounds. If bought, Bangladesh will have to start using various types (APFS, HEAT etc.) of 105mm NATO rounds for this platform. I believe the army currently uses mostly Chinese ammo and not 105 mm caliber. I could be off base though...

.
yes it can, however not in paddy fields

Even the 60 tonne Leopard 2RI had no problem in navigating paddy field. That's the benefit of tracked vehicle, it can traverse soft ground by distributing it weight across the track

Does ind have active protection system?

The Medium Tank has sufficient power to accommodate additional system such as APS, if the customer require such system (and obviously paying the additional price tag) it can be added.

well yes, ground pressure comes into play and i'm tired of explaining it to my brethen... people think heavier = worse handling

I don't have the data on the track width & length (surface area), however this tank were design per Indonesia specification, which mean muddy terrain, paddy field, mountainous jungle, etc

Indonesian terrain looks quite strong. But, a similar 60-ton tank cannot be operated in the Bangladesh soil. Even a few Indian 15-ton small tanks were stuck in the muds of BD in 1971.

Someone is talking here as if by only expanding the contact area of tracks a 60-ton tank can move in any soft soil. But, the track width cannot be enlarged, say, 1.5 times arbitrarily to expand the contact area. There are many other factors that must be considered in the design stage when enlarging the track width.

KAPLAN MT is a modern medium-weight tank being developed jointly by FNSS and PT Pindad. It is designed to offer high lethality in combination with superior tactical mobility.

The first prototype of the Kaplan MT tank was exhibited during the 13th International Defence Industry Fair (IDEF) 2017 held in Istanbul in May. The tank made its public presence in Indonesia during a military parade on National Armed Forces Day in October.

KAPLAN MT design and features
The layout of the Kaplan MT tank resembles a standard main battle tank (MBT) with the driver at the centre of forward hull, turret in the middle and crew, as well as power-pack at the rear of the hull.

The interior has been designed with major emphasis on crew ergonomics and various tactical and battlefield conditions such as driving, firing and loading / off-loading of ammunition. The driver’s position offers an enhanced field of view and convenient access to control panel and driving instruments.

Crew enter / exit the vehicle through single-piece hatch covers mounted on the roof of the hull. The gunner and commander are provided with sighting systems for observation during the day / night, while the commander’s position is installed with a panoramic sight.

The KAPLAN MT is also equipped with a battlefield management system (BMS), a wireless crew intercom system, a navigation system and an automatic fire extinguishing system.

Armament aboard the medium-weight tank
The tank is fitted with CMI Cockerill 3105 turret mounting a Cockerill 105mm high-pressure gun. The lightweight gun features an advanced autoloader to deliver rapid fire-power.

The 105mm gun can fire NATO-standard 105mm ammunition and can engage targets at a maximum distance of 10km. The secondary weapon system includes a 7.62mm coaxial machine gun mounted to the left side of the main gun.

Self-protection features of KAPLAN MT
The MMWT provides STANAG 4569 Level 4 ballistic protection against 14.5mm armoured projectiles and 155mm shell splinters. It can withstand the explosion of 10kg TNT under the track and bottom of the hull.

The tank can be hinged with add-on armour to increase the protection to STANAG 4569 Level 5 to sustain damage from 25mm armour piercing discarding sabot-tracer (APDS-T) rounds.

The KAPLAN MT is also fitted with smoke grenade dischargers, a chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) protection system and a laser warning system for increased survivability against hostile threats.

Engine and mobility
The vehicle is powered by a new-generation diesel engine coupled to a fully automatic electronic controlled transmission. It offers a power-to-weight ratio of 20hp/t, based on the configuration of protection system. The fuel is supplied from two separate fuel tanks.

The power-pack is equipped with a cooling pack integrating an intelligent software-controlled hydraulic fan for improved torque and fuel economy. The auxiliary power unit aboard the tank will enable the operation of turret without the need for power from the engine. The advanced battery monitoring system further enables optimum power management.

What are you on about... if you’ve been to Indonesia, you would know how much worse it is...
Anyways if such were the case then Bangladesh wouldn’t have airports to land jumbo sized airplanes or tanks that it already has... it would be like Russia or ukraine with mostly unprepared airfield because of it would just erode away due to heavy rain...
