I do get the point that 'Facebook India Company' should obey the Indian law. But the whole point of the internet is net neutrality. India should then make their own internet for use by India in India only? The internet is a global network. No?

Within Indian borders Facebook will respect Indian Law. This is the standard practice of all MNCs

Yes, but effectively you are denying your people the real Internet, by making your own version of the internet.

Access to real information, access to learning, access to other cultures... etc.

It goes to show this is not about Indian law or the Indian people, but a really really frightened and insecure government who is willing to deny the real world to achieve their oligarchical aims

What is "Real Internet" every country in the world has its own set of rules. However these rules affect barely 1% of the information available on the net (except for countries like China and North Korea)

So 99% of the internet is same in all the countries. Isn't it real internet?

Social media giant Facebook has told its moderators who are tasked with “spelling out what is forbidden” to “look out for” the phrase “Free Kashmir”, a media report said.

According to a report in The New York Times, “Inside Facebook’s Secret Rulebook for Global Political Speech”, the social media giant has told its moderators that Indian law prohibits calls for an independent Kashmir.


“…another slide says that Indian law prohibits calls for an independent Kashmir, which some legal scholars dispute. The slide instructs moderators to “look out for” the phrase “Free Kashmir” — though the slogan, common among activists, is completely legal,” reported The New York Times.

“Facebook says it is simply urging moderators to apply extra scrutiny to posts that use the phrase. Still, even this could chill activism in Kashmir. And it is not clear that the distinction will be obvious to moderators, who are warned that ignoring violations could get Facebook blocked in India.”

Facebook has been accused of temporarily or permanently disabling posts, mostly of journalists and activists, in the past.

The social network has drawn criticism for undermining democracy and for provoking bloodshed in societies small and large, said the report.

“Every other Tuesday morning, several dozen Facebook employees gather over breakfast to come up with the rules, hashing out what the site’s two billion users should be allowed to say. The guidelines that emerge from these meetings are sent out to 7,500-plus moderators around the world. (After publication of this article, Facebook said it had increased that number to around 15,000.)”

“The closely held rules are extensive, and they make the company a far more powerful arbiter of global speech than has been publicly recognized or acknowledged by the company itself,” The New York Times has found.

“The Times was provided with more than 1,400 pages from the rulebooks by an employee who said he feared that the company was exercising too much power, with too little oversight — and making too many mistakes.”

An examination of the files revealed numerous gaps, biases and outright errors, said the report.

Free Kashmir/ Independent Kashmir may be against Indian law, but not against Pakistani Law.. So if someone is residing in Pakistan, he could very well use this phrase as much as he/ she wants..

Kashmir issue can only be settled thru diplomacy, as we are not going to go into another war with India over it. But India on the other hand is curbing even social media over some phrases, do you see their leadership as a willing party who wants to settle this matter? Hell no.

This is just a rant. Because everytime I see a topic about j&k I feel who are we dealing with, Indian state is too rigged and they dont talk. Kashmir knows Pakistan will never leave their cause, but I have one suggestion, if Imran Khan, after we are out of our own mess, cannot bring resolution to this matter no one can.

This is just a rant. Because everytime I see a topic about j&k I feel who are we dealing with, Indian state is too rigged and they dont talk. Just tell me realistically. What exactly do you expect from any talks between India and Pakistan?

India will give you the Kashmir Valley? - That is not going to happen
Pakistan will give us P-0-K? That is not going to happen
India will hold a referendum? That is not going to happen
Pakistan will hand over Hafiz Saeed and Dawood Ibrahim? That is not going to happen

Both India and Pakistan have their red lines and none of them will cross them.

So tell me honestly - Isn't status quo better than this tamasha of peace talks?
