Philippines War on ISIS, Abu Sayaf, Maute: News & Discussions

Philippines soldiers battle Isis-linked gunmen on Marawi city streets

A group of heavily-armed militants from a group linked to Isishave reportedly stormed a city in the Philippines and engaged in firefights with the national army.

Troops and a special police force were deployed to the city after residents in a nearby village raised the alarm and appealed for help.

President Rodrigo Duterte then declared martial law and a state of emergency in the province of Mindano. General Eduardo Ano, the military chief of staff, said at least one police officer was killed and eight soldiers were wounded in the fighting.

“I’m appealing to residents of Marawi City to stay home, drop on the ground if they hear gunshots," Mamintal Adiong Jr, the governor of the Lanao del Sur province told The Philippine Starnewspaper. "They have to lock their doors and gates too."

Local reports suggested that the militants had entered a local hospital and raised a black Isis flag above the roof, although this information was officially verified by the army.

Witnesses reported seeing men in attire similar to that worn by Isis militants walking the streets before firing at houses and government buildings.

"There [were] no indications that an attack like this will happen. There are no checkpoints in the city," one resident said. "Everything is in silence. No news about the city government. Everything is vague."

Muslim sepreatists have. Decade old armed resistance movement but they never joined anything called ISIS.

Yup, Many of the local groups in Libya, Syria, Kashmir, Iraq etc are allying themselves with ISIS.
Either way, they just signed their own Death warrant....
No one is allying with ISIS, its just bollywood & Hollywood sponsored prapoganda , few paid proxies to show up on the grounds that's it?
If any real Isis, Ever exists for example , in Indian held Kashmir !

(UPDATED) President Rodrigo Duterte says he may expand martial law to Luzon and Visayas if the threat of ISIS persists

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – President Rodrigo Duterte said Wednesday, May 24, that he is considering to expand the implementation of martial law to the entire Philippines after he placed Mindanao under military rule.

Duterte said he might expand martial law to the Visayas and Luzon if the threat of the terrorist Islamic State (ISIS) persists. (READ: Duterte says martial law due to ISIS threat)

"If I think that the ISIS has already taken foothold also in Luzon, and terrorism is not really far behind, I might declare martial law throughout the country to protect the people," Duterte said in a press briefing upon his arrival from an official trip to Russia on Wednesday.

Initially, Duterte volunteered that he may decide to expand the scope of martial rule to the Visayas, as it is right beside Mindanao.

"I may decide to expand the area to include the Visayas because it is a walking distance actually," he said.

"I might also decide to suspend the writ of habeas corpus in the Visayas. Remember that this is not intended for the law-abiding citizens. We are the least of your worries," the President added.

Later, Duterte said he would also consider placing Luzon under the scope of martial rule, or a nation-wide imposition of martial law.

Duterte made these remarks a day after he declared martial law in Mindanao on Tuesday, May 23, due to a terror attack by the Maute Group in Marawi City.

Critics of the martial law declaration deemed it as a prelude to the imposition of martial rule nationwide. (READ: After Mindanao, Duterte wants to put PH under martial law – Trillanes)

Duterte on Wednesday morning said he will be "harsh" in implementing martial law, which he said "will not be any different" from the military rule under dictator Ferdinand Marcos.

The President had earlier warned about martial law in Mindanao. The last time he raised this prospect was on May 19, or 4 days before he declared martial law in the southern Philippines.

"And if I declare martial law in Mindanao, I will solve all that ails the island," Duterte said on May 19.

Clashes in Marawi City began on Tuesday afternoon after the Philippine military launched a surgical strike against "high-value targets" belonging to the Abu Sayyaf Group and the Maute Group. Clashes with the Maute Group killed at least one policeman as of 8 pm.

With a population of more than 201,780 people, Marawi is the most populous city in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM). – Rappler.com

Lol Dude go and read about Philippines Muslim insurrection/rebellion . It has been raging on for decades. Long before there was any ISIS/Alqaeda or even soviet Afghan war etc. They just recently adopted ISIS emblem, but they are a homegrown group that emerged decades ago(even though I agree that some of their grievances are legitimate, but that doesn't mean they should use terrorism to achieve their goals). So it's better to read before spewing the usual: "Western powers/CIA, MI6,Missad is behind every issue out there". It's becoming boring to be honest.

Should start counting centuries ago since when the Spaniards marginalized the Muslims in the Philippines.
Since the 1500s.

Russian President Vladimir Putin (R) shakes hands with Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte at the Kremlin in Moscow, Russia, May 23, 2017. (Kremlin Photo)

MOSCOW, May 24 (Xinhua) -- Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has asked his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, for arms to fight Islamic militants in the Asian country.

"Our country needs modern weapons to fight against ISIS. We had certain orders in the U.S., however, the situation is not very good now. I came to Moscow to ask for your help and support," the Kremlin quoted Duterte as telling Putin in a meeting on Tuesday.

Duterte stressed that Russia is a reliable partner, and he offered to continue their friendship.

"We need to improve trade exchange between the two countries," the Philippine leader said.

Putin noted that Moscow and Manila have many bilateral projects, including power engineering, defense cooperation, and transport infrastructure.

Duterte arrived in Moscow on Tuesday for a four-day official visit, but was forced to cut short his trip as fighting broke out in the southern Philippine region of Mindanao.

Putin said he hoped the conflict in the Philippines would be resolved "with minimum losses."

Duterte's delegation remained in Moscow to sign bilateral agreements on Wednesday, Russian media reported.

apart from the interview not to fight China, this remark to kick Rothschild out of Philippines must have irked USA

President Duterte Kicks Rothschilds Out Of Philippines

President Duterte has vowed to “eradicate all traces of Rothschild financial criminality” from the Philippines, announcing that he will no longer respond to pressure or financial blackmail from the US government or Rothschild-controlled global banking institutions.

Well said, it is time to be region, act like a region. If the ASEAN is the focal point of East Asian regionalism, it is the right opportunity to show its leadership, for which for China and Japan are quite fine.

The threat needs to be exterminated at its very inception point. I, therefore, am for Duterte's no hostage policy; to cure the cancerous body, a number of healthier cells might be sacrificed for the goodness of the whole.

Like @Shotgunner51 says, it is time for China, Russia and ASEAN as a sub-region to show solidarity in material sense and support the Philippines. The war going on there is perhaps fought in the name of all East Asia.
