I'm sure that at this point of their lives, they are not into our country's resources and luxurious life but rather wanting and seeing their love ones to continue living.

So yes let's accept and let them live here. Anyway they have the option to go back whenever they wanted.

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippines is ready to take in Syrian refugees in response to the humanitarian crisis in Europe, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said yesterday.

Foreign Affairs spokesman Charles Jose said the Philippines could be a temporary destination as refugees await acceptance from a host country for resettlement.

Jose said the Philippines needs to assess its resources and capabilities before it can decide to take in people escaping from war-torn nations.

“While we will abide by our commitments as a signatory to the UN Convention on refugees, we should also take into account our own resources and capabilities, considering we are still in the rehabilitation stage from the aftermath of Typhoon Yolanda,” Jose said.

The head of the United Nations refugee agency is urging the European Union (EU) to accept up to 200,000 asylum-seekers fleeing the conflict zones in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan.

Hundreds of thousands of people are risking their lives to cross the Mediterranean Sea into Europe.

UN High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres said the largest influx of refugees into Europe for decades requires a “massive common effort” and a break from the current fragmented approach, which he said has failed to find an effective common response.

“The issue should be addressed at its source, so the international community could help the countries from where these refugees are coming,” Jose said.

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) said the shocking images of children on the shores of Europe must be matched by action as the migrant and refugee crisis in the region deepens.

In June, the Philippines expressed willingness to share with ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) member-states, who would take in Bangladeshi and ethnic Rohingya migrants, its best practices in the processing of refugees and managing workers’ deployment.

The DFA said this was discussed during the special meeting on irregular migration in the Indian Ocean held in Bangkok, Thailand.

The Philippines attended the meeting in solidarity with ASEAN.

The Philippine delegation, composed of officials from the DFA and the Department of Justice (DOJ), participated in the meeting on Rohingya refugees.

The problem is that we still don't have the sufficient infrastructure to take in more refugees; heck we already have too many domestic problems.

I get your point. We don't even claim them as our responsibility but what our country is offering is charity. Aquino said we are ready to help them but limited since we are poor our selves. But as equal human beings living on a small rock in the galaxy, we have to give.

propaganda only
The Philippines has shown, time and again, it's "open doors" policy. The European Jews (during the time of Pres. Quezon), White Russians (during the time of Pres. Quirino) and the Vietnamese can attest to that.

By the way the Philippines is a signatory to the 1951 United Nations Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees, in which the country’s commitment to extend assistance to war refugees is entrenched. How about Thailand?

it will be nice to see PH helping hand in this crisis

We don't have enough for our poor people but we will never turn our heads to anyone in need. That's Filipino HOSPITALITY, unique to others.

MANILA, Philippines - President Benigno S. Aquino III said Tuesday that the Philippines is ready to help refugees from conflict-stricken Syria.

In a media forum aired on state-run People's Television, Aquino noted that the Philippines helped other asylum-seekers in the past.

Aquino cited the case of the 2,700 Vietnamese boat people who sought refuge in the Philippines in the 1970s.

He also mentioned the over 1,200 European Jewish refugees who were saved by the Philippines from Adolf Hitler's Nazi Germany during the Holocaust.

"We have proven, as a country, that we are ready to assist," Aquino said.

But with limited resources and millions living in poverty, Aquino said the Philippines can only do so much.

"The history is there, the culture is there. We just want to make sure that we manage it properly, that we don't take more than what we can handle," he said.

"Vast majority of our people are still living in poverty. We would like to take our resources to better our people and do our fair share," the president added.

@Nihonjin1051 don't you think Japan as a US ally and "partner" should take in the Syrian refugees. After all this refugee situation was caused by the US.

I don't see why PN is responsible for taking them in?

It's very humbling. Indeed. They don't have much at all but they offer anyways. Japan should also consider bringing in some refugees.
