ISLAMABAD: Despite its strained relations with Afghanistan, Pakistan has given a go-ahead to the National Highway Authority (NHA) to begin the process of hiring consultants who will carry out a feasibility study on the proposed Peshawar-Kabul Motorway.

According to documents available with The Express Tribune, the NHA is undertaking the process to hire consultants for the project. Officials say the preliminary cost of the project is Rs80 billion. It will take an approximate three years to build. The project will not only help boost trade between the two neighbouring countries, but will also give Pakistan an access to Central Asia.

NHA spokesman Kashif Zaman, sharing the background of the project, said in a meeting held in August 2013 between foreign ministers of the two countries, Kabul requested Islamabad to construct the motorway keeping in view the growing demand of trade between the two countries.

The process to hire consultants for feasibility study of the project is expected to be completed in the next six months, according to the NHA spokesman. It will be a four-lane access-controlled motorway, he said.

The total length of the motorway is 281 kilometres and is divided into three packages: Peshawar-Torkham (50km) which will be constructed from scratch meanwhile the existing structure of Torkham-Jalalabad (76km) and Jalalabad-Kabul (155km) will be upgraded, he said.

The road running between Torkham and Jalalabad was completed in 2005.

Impressed by the quality of the project, the Afghan government had requested Pakistan to construct an additional carriageway on the project so that increasing traffic load could be catered for.

The request was accepted and work on the additional carriageway started in 2007 but could not be carried out due to multiple reasons.

However, after coming into power, the present government restarted work on the project in July 2015.

According to the NHA, currently 60 per cent work has been executed and the project is expected to meet its completion deadline of June 2017. It is 74 kilometres long and will cost around Rs7 billion.

Peshawar to Kabul motorway 80B and just Rawalpindi Metro 50 BN  fir kahtay hain sabooot doo hamnay corruption ki hey hahahhaha sahi koi ******* koom ko ******** banaya huwa hey inhonay

Time for parts of Afghanistan to become part of Pakistan, to fully complete the 'A'' acronym for Afghania in PAKISTAN.

This motorway will be game changer for Pakistan/Afghanistan relations. Peshawar-Karachi motorway should be completed in couple of years. While Peshawar-Kabul maybe by 2020.

Despite its strained relations with Afghanistan, Pakistan has given a go-ahead to the National Highway Authority (NHA) to begin the process of hiring consultants who will carry out a feasibility study on the proposed Peshawar-Kabul Motorway.

See Pakistan is thinking long term here and ignoring Modi loving Afghanis in Kabul for time being.

Not possible, specially with this money they can't build Jalalabad Torkham let alone Peshawar Kabul. It is one way road all the way from Jalalabad city to Kabul. 7 to 8 years back Husnain Cotex won a tender to build Peshawar Torkham express way and at that time the cost of cutting the mountains was around 20 billion. The project never started though.

Afghanistan must become more stable before we push for a move like this. These highways will become congested trade routes for drugs, weapons, criminals and ect...

Great move, hope it gets operational soon.

Our priorities are seriously messed up! The most important motorway for the country is the Quetta-Multan motorway. It would connect Balochistan to Punjab and would also connect it to the Karachi-Lahore motorway giving Balochistan a much easier access to Lahore and Karachi. Connectivity inside the country is more important!!

They have always been part of Problem... so better stay as it is.... I wish them best of luck and hope it will strengthen our relationship with Afghanistan

Shame on corrupt leaders, our people need urgent medication, better hospitals and better schooling yet they are spending money on Afghans who work against Pakistan and i think only purpose is to steal money

Work is already underway to upgrade highway N-70 which connect Quetta with Multan, Pakistan can upgrade it to motorway in near future.

"The chairman informed the meeting that N-70 (Multan-Qila Saifullah) runs in the centre of the country, linking the Eastern and Western areas. It connects provinces of Balochistan and Punjab and acts as the shortest route between Wagah and Taftan through Lahore and Quetta. With the improvement of this link the East-West corridor will be shortened by about 200 kms, the press release said. The project would contribute towards safe and effective transportation, especially heavy vehicles and enhance the socio-economic environment of the entire area, the chairman added. The 11.6km section would cost Rs13.75 billion and is financed by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)."

Amazing -- now the Afghan National Police will again have to mortar the Torkham gate to allow the vehicles to pass through.
