RAWALPINDI: In line with government’s directives, the police have started a surveillance of people belonging to the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) and considering issuing them chip-based national identity cards equipped with security features.

A senior police official told Dawn that strict surveillance of more than 5,400 people belonging to the tribal areas and living in the Rawalpindi division had been started. He said the police were also considering containing them to a specific place so that they could be keep under a watch.

He said the whereabouts of all such individuals were being gathered in Rawalpindi and three other districts. Of the total individuals from the tribal areas, 4,300 were living/doing business in the Rawalpindidistrict, 610 in Attock, 245 in Jhelum and 280 in Chakwal.

He said the police were also getting biometric verifications of suspicious people during the joint operation being conducted by the army, police and intelligence agencies after the fresh wave of terrorist attacks in the country.

“Any individual found without the national identity card is detained by the police,” he said.

Separately, the police sealed seven bus stands in Pirwadhai for the lack of security arrangements in accordance with the standard operating procedure on Monday night. But the police withdrew from bus stands after about 12 hours.

Haji Zahoor Ahmed, the chairman of the transport union, told Dawn that the police started raiding the private bus stands on Monday night and sealed seven bus stands except the general bus terminal.

He said one of the private bus stands that were sealed had 16 close circuit television cameras (CCTV), four armed security guards and other arrangements as directed by the police.

Due to the sealing of the bus stands, hundreds of people had to face trouble as they kept on shuttling between Pirwadhai, Faizabad and Soan bus stands to reach their destinations. After observing the situation, the police unsealed the bus stands.

Mr Ahmed said when the attention of senior police officials was drawn towards the Pirwadhai general bus stand, which lacked proper security measures, they only said it was a government bus stand.

What kind of policing is this? Can not keep law and order situation. So, they thought only people of FATA can be a threat.

Very good step undertaken by govt. Suicide bombers are belonging to tribal areas adjoining the borders with Afganistan where they equipped and trained by RAW. Govt to locate the camps of RAW and bombed them too as a pre-emptive measure.

.
pathetic, most of them are law abiding citizens who supported Army against TTP..

First put jhang city under surveillance who elected son of Jhangvi then put anyother region under surveillance..

. .
They also sud keep an eye on Punjabies living in Fata or KPK cuz there is element of so called Punjabi taliban they sud take any measures to keep pakistani safe. This is about the safety of Pakistanies.

This will probably be not good/effective. A collaborative rather than isolative approach should be adopted.

I think this is going a little overboard. Like the FCR... we cannot treat everyone from a particular region as a terrorist. In fact laws like FCR and collective responsibilities act is responsible for creating a pro ethnic and even a pro tribal identity in FATA where loyalty to tribe and not even ethnicity is paramount with the tribes fighting each other at times. A lot of this tribal infighting goes unreported. We need to take steps to bring civilization into FATA and development is important but calling all FATIAN's terrorists including lashkaris who risked their lives to fight talibans is not a good move. I understand the motivation as a lot of terrorists are from FATA but tact is needed, not aggression. By this logic even US can go after all terrorists because most suicide bombings are done by muslims-deny it all you want....

FATA needs development, not isolation and a type of suspect treatment. With a literacy rate of 22% and unemployment over 60% we are asking for trouble in FATA but government has done nothing for the region. Development is needed but the entire system currently is flawed. Merger of FATA and elimination of FCR Collective responsibilities act has been a legitimate demand of the local people. But no one listens to FATIAN's. @Fawad Masīd @naveedullahkhankhattak

Diesel drum and other mofo's who are opposed to the merger of fata into mainstream are the enemy. It's amazing how these midgets can compromise security and safety of the entire nation.

keeping people under srveillance is not illegal or immoral. Any government have a right to do so for the safety and security of the country. It should be taken as a positive step as most terrorists belonged to those areas and just keeping on eye to find out the black sheeps is alright for me. Abduction of people for no reason(which isn't the case) is wrong fo such purpose.
