Pentagon admits it dumped some 9/11 remains in a landfill
29th Feburary 2012
THE unidentified partial remains of some 9/11 victims were inadvertently dumped in a landfill, the Pentagon acknowledged in a report today.
The remains of an unknown number of victims from the terrorist attack on the Pentagon and the hijacked plane that crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, ended up at the dump site after first being transported to the US Port Mortuary in Dover, Delaware.
The air base morgue, usually reserved for the handling of fallen members of the US Armed Forces, was under review by the Defense Department after a report by The Washington Post revealed that unidentified remains of US troops had been dumped in a Virginia landfill.
The Air Force acknowledged the practice in December, saying the air base morgue had cremated unidentifiable body parts of at least 274 US servicemembers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan between 2003 and 2008, which were later disposed of at the landfill.
The practice was halted in 2008, according to report.
But the Defense Department's review of the morgue's procedures, led by retired Army General John P. Abizaid, uncovered information indicating the "policy began shortly after September 11, 2001, when several portions of remains from the Pentagon attack and the Shanksville, Pennsylvania, crash site could not be tested or identified".
Gen Abizaid's report indicated the cremated remains were transferred in sealed containers to a "biomedical waste disposal contractor" for final incineration.
According to the report, Dover officials believed "nothing remained" after final incineration, but the review indicated that some residual matter was left over, which the contractor transported to the landfill.
