The U.S. military considers the work performed at the Dover Air Force Base mortuary to be one of its most sacred duties. Officials at Dover themselves changed their policy in 2008, recognizing that there was a more dignified way to handle this particularly solemn responsibility. Since then, unidentifiable remains have been cremated, placed in an urn, and buried at sea.
A review of this matter has been directed by the Secretary of Defense, and you can be sure that the U.S. military, an organization constantly seeking self-improvement, will learn and apply any necessary lessons.
