India’s hunt for acquisition of 126 medium multi-role combat aircraft (MMRCA) is coming to a close with the defence ministry giving the green signal to the evaluation process that led to selection of the French Rafale fighter. The plane was chosen as it was the lowest bidder on the basis of its lifecycle cost and technology transfer. The total deal is worth $20 billion (Rs 1.12 lakh crore) with options for further purchases.

Replying to a letter written on February 27, 2012 by TDP Rajya Sabha member MV Mysura Reddy alleging manipulation of the MMRCA evaluation process, defence minister AK Antony said: "The issues raised by you were examined by independent monitors who have concluded that the approach and methodology adopted by the Contract Negotiations Committee (CNC) in the evaluation of the commercial proposals thus far, have been reasonable and appropriate and within the terms of the Request for Proposals (RFR) and Defence Procurement Procedure, 2006."

The Indian Air Force on January 31 had declared Rafale as the preferred bidder, overriding the claims of the multi-nation Eurofighter. According to negotiations, 18 Rafale fighters will arrive in India from mid-2015, with another 108 to be built in India under collaboration.

As reported in the Hindustan Times, Reddy had written to Antony stating: "The alleged manipulation of the evaluation process in picking the (Rafale), which resulted in the decision to procure 126 MMRCA has raised serious apprehensions not only across the country but also worldwide. If a proper decision is not taken, the country's credibility will be at stake."

Two days later, Antony ordered an inquiry into all the points raised by Reddy.

Talking to HT after receiving Antony's final response on Monday evening in Hyderabad, Reddy said he was not satisfied with the reply. "I will wait for the report after the defence ministry has examined the finalised CNC recommendations as promised by the defence minister," he said.

Don't forget the $20 billion price tag includes total life cycle cost n not just fly away cost(u r forgeting we went for the lowest bidder)
N don't forget 50% of the contract value will come back to india($10 billion)

N considering we r already paying close to $100 million for mki (fly away cost) what else had u expected...:undecided:

It is the best deal we could get, apart from all that we will get ToT for some high tech stuff which we could not have got so easily.. then the common support structure between the Mirages and of course the experience in dealing with the French....

Due to our vast experience with mirage the transition won't take much time i guess n other than that french will also help us in jet engine development n don't forget AESA radar technology

Most importantly it will help our domestic industry absorb various western technologies which we couldn't have got with the russians

A}Lowest bidder among Eurofighter and Rafale bid...

B}I just hope these 20 billion $ includes the cost of weapons and spares also otherwise we will have to shell out another 10 Billion $ for the weapons for these aircrafts....

C}We are expecting PakFa to cost around 100 Million$....and here we are paying 180 million$ for 4.5 Gen aircraft....

D}The Sukhoi that you are talking about will be equiped with 5 Gen equipments which will help us in reducing R&D cost of FGFA....

i agree with u to some extent
1.We r already in dire need of new jets for over a decade now

2.Super sukhoi's will remain a 4.5 gen plane no matter which weapons u add

3.Don't expect PAKFA(not FGFA) deliveries for india before 2019-20

4.PAKFA $100 million cost is a 2011 estimate (we had a estimated cost of $80 million for rafale)
Don't u expect cost escalation by 2020(actual delivery)

so what do u suggest how to fill the gap between 2016-2020 (rafale is expected delivery date is 2016-17)

5.rafale technologies will help us in development of FGFA

6.how do we fill the ground attack plane role without rafale (PAKFA n sukhois can't be used for that role)
