She raised an active voice against illegal "Qabza" on parks in karachi and the one who devoted her life for social works. According to BBC another person, who raised his voice against "Qabza Group" involved in illegal control and construction on Gutter Bageecha, was killed as well. I guess we all know who is doing these Qabza work, specially on parks.

Parveen Rehman dedicated her life to helping the poor migrants in Orangi Town Karachi. May her soul rest in peace.

Here's an excerpt from post I did on Orangi in 2009:

Parveen Rehman, of the Orangi Pilot Project, told a reporter of the Telegraph that the word “slum” did not do justice to its hard-working people, who had developed their own welfare system.

“People are poor but they are not destitute, they’re working class. It’s one of the poorest settlements. People have arranged their own schools, clinics and water supply. They are a great example of people helping themselves.

Ms. Rahman is right in her assessment. Orangi is not really a slum today. But it started life as a 'kutchi abadi' or squatter settlement for the large influx of refugees in Karachi from East Pakistan (often mistakenly called Biharis) after the fall of Dhaka in early 1970s. It consists of an area larger than 25 square miles (versus 0.67 sq miles in Dharavi) with a population of over a million (versus over 700,000 residents of Dharavi). Most of Orangi's population increase in the last three decades has come from the growing rural to urban migration, particularly of ethnic Pushtoons from the North West Frontier Province (NWFP). Shanties have now grown into single or two level cement houses over the years and a large number of schools have been operating successfully, sending the poorest children into the best educational institutions of the city. A significant population of educated middle class has grown in Orangi. There are a number of small businesses and a cottage industry, started by budding entrepreneurs and funded by microfinance efforts in the area. The city of Karachi has built roads into Orangi to provide improved access for the residents. A hospital was built in the community in the 1990s. While Dharavi has only one toilet per 1440 residents and most of its residents use Mahim Creek, a local river, for urination and defecation, Orangi has an elaborate sanitation system built by its citizens. Under Orangi Pilot Project's guidance, between 1981 and 1993 Orangi residents installed sewers serving 72,070 of 94,122 houses. To achieve this, community members spent more than US$2 million of their own money, and OPP invested about US$150,000 in research and extension of new technologies. Orangi pilot project has been admired widely for its work with urban poor.

Haq's Musings: Orangi is not Dharavi!

They should have got Altaf when they could back in the 80's and 90's. It would have been one less problem to deal with today. We'll manage it though, like we always have, by the sacrifice of good people. Nobody's blood will go to waste and one day this nation will look back and revere them all, through celebrations for the notable ones and in spirit for the unsung heroes.

This incident reminds me the murder of Hakeem Saeed Shaheed back in 1997. Another sad and heartbreaking incident.

We are grieved to hear the news of targeted assassination of the social worker Parveen Rehman, Director of the Orangi Pilot Project. Dr. Rehman was a dedicated person, working for the betterment of the poor and the down-trotted. We condemn this senseless killing and echo the words of Michael Dodman, the US Consul General in Karachi, who has extended the United States’ heartfelt condolences to the friends and family of renowned social reformer Parveen Rehman. He said, “We join all who condemn the senseless killing of a woman whose life was dedicated to helping the less fortunate.”

RIP, one Courageous Woman Citizen of Karachi.
Does it take any bravery to attack an unarmed woman who worked for ordinary folks?
What a Shame.

They should have got Altaf when they could back in the 80's and 90's. It would have been one less problem to deal with today. We'll manage it though, like we always have, by the sacrifice of good people. Land grabbing in Karachi is a flourishing business. However, we, the residents of the Sindhi Jamat Cooperative Housing Society Ltd (established in 1970) are the latest victims of this dirty business.
The Society`s land comprising two portions is located on both sides of the Main National Highway in Bin Qasim Town. The leased plots of our Society have recently been illegally occupied by a land mafia unfortunately associated with the local “Peace Committee”.

We had purchased plots out of our life-long savings but land grabbers have deprived us of our property. The land mafia people are equipped with arms and ammunition. Instead, they are openly threatening us and are re-selling our residential plots.

We reported the matter to the Shah Lateef Town police concerned, but they are hesitant to intervene in view of the political influence of land grabbers.

We hereby appeal to Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah to personally intervene and order the arrest of culprits and have our plots vacated from illegal occupants.

The residents of two multi-storeyed buildings, Society Apartments in PECHS at the corner of Sharae Quaideen and Kashmir Road, Karachi, are in a quandary. Their parking space is now under the illegal control of a land mafia group, who got a motorised lifter and removed the cars of all residents.

All those who protested were arrested and thrown in the lock-up of the Ferozabad Police Station. The police threatened them and detained them for almost 24 hours.

On the cusp of 11 and 12 June, an illegal compound wall was built by the mafia who in collusion with the extremists have built a mosque in one corner of the parking lot.

The mosque was not in the original plan. It started as a covered platform and has over the years become a three-storeyed structure. On the upper two floors, members of the extremist group house their outstation members.

The mafia has strong clout and those who manage the affairs of the mosque also threaten the residents. Surprisingly, no TV channel has given coverage to this act of repression and highhandedness. Here is an opportunity for them to get some news.

The Supreme Court (SC) on Thursday resumed hearing of a case regarding implementation of its ruling on Karachi’s law-and-order.
A five-member larger bench, headed by Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali, heard at SC’s Karachi Registry the case regarding law and order, extortion and target killings in the metropolis, a private television channel reported.
Other members of the bench include Justice Sarmad Jalal Osmani, Justice Amir Hani Muslim, Justice Gulzar Ahmed and Justice Khilji Arif Hussain.
At the onset of the hearing, Additional Chief Secretary, Advocate General Sindh Abdul Fatah, IG Sindh Fayyaz Laghari and officials of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), Karachi Building Control Authority (KBCA) and Land Revenue Department appeared before the bench.
KMC officials presented maps and details about encroachments on government land in Karachi.
At which Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali observed that land grabbing and encroachments are major hurdles in development of the city.
Justice Gulzar said the land department has sold all the land spared for the purpose of recreation of citizens, especially for senior citizens. “No park for recreation and no ground for strolling have been left.”
The court issued contempt of court notices to Chief Secretary Board of Revenue and Senior Director Master Plane KMC for not conducting a survey ordered by the apex court in 2005 for the protection of government lands.
Revenue officials said the land record was being computerized.

I kind of agree but it is a gift of our muderous democracy that mafias of all types have thrived in the last 5 years. Its tanker mafia, land mafia, drug mafia but most importantly a political mafia which is providing patronage to this crime.

If political parties which form alliance and stick to govt. like leeches will not deliver, then who will? On top of abject failure, they are adamant on staying in power.

Parween Rahman's murder is done by one such mafia. Not only were they strong before, they have got hired guns too! Its all because of impotence, connivance or cooperation of the political mafia ruling Sind. After all, how can you expect these political parties - MQM, ANP and PPP to deliver when they have their own fully active militant wings settling their scores through murder and torture?!
