Pakistan's Untouchables: This is Sabir's story

571374-sabr-1372771232-687-640x480.JPG

Sabir now works as a private tutor.

“My teachers would tell me my brain can’t work,” says Sabir, who was born a Deendar Changar – Pakistan’s version of the ‘untouchables’.
From being told he would never be accepted to losing jobs because of his caste, Sabir is not a typical victim of the abject poverty and prejudice found in the city of Lahore today.

Sabir confesses he feels as if he is a Jew living in Nazi Germany.

“We are openly discriminated against. We don’t even have access to clean drinking water,” he says.

Sabir has, however, refused to live the life that his peers thought he would always be subjected to.

Despite suffering blatant discrimination throughout his academic and work life, he has forged a path for himself where he can safely say that he never stopped striving.

A student of cost management and finance at a private institution in Lahore, Sabir now works as a tutor and teaches local children in the slums in Lahore, where members of his community are usually made to live.

Sabir’s story shows how the human spirit and individual dignity can challenge the ancient and modern prejudices that exist in Pakistan today.

Who are these people ? I've never heard of them !

At any rate its extremely shameful, if this happens but I'm glad that we have this out in the open - Nothing changes unless people themselves tell such despicable vermin to 'foOk Off' & treat brilliant & hardworking people like Sabir as an asset of Pakistan instead of this sh*t !

. . .
Untouchability is in not accepted in civilized society , Governments of Subcontinent should insure it any cost.

.
Look at the bright side. With education, he has overcome some hurdles. So there is a solution.

. .
In fact, Pakistan is clearly Africa, what we expect?

Look at their tents, camps, bed, and candles which is exactly in Africa or Somalia. No water, no electricity, no standard living..

. .
This is the legacy of hinduisim, Punjab/Sindh are a very caste based societies. Even when I was getting married, everybody asked whats your caste/zaat etc... it's a shame that we muslims also engage in this stuff

. .
Ever spoken to bhangi ya jamedar of your local area they are all christians

Some of them are....yes; others are drivers, cooks, gardeners etc. when it come to 'domestic help' or at least my gardener is !

At any rate so are Muslims engaged in those professions including being jamadars !

But then again I've had Christian teachers, colleagues & family friends too & none of them were treated in such a shameful way by us or anyone I knew who interacted with them !

Are you Hindu or Indian? If not, then call this 'Islamic' caste system of Pakistan.
