Pakistan's Submarine Procurement

One of the most essential parts of the new generation submarine is her AIP powerpack. From Pakistani navy sources we have received some unsatisfactory about the Mesma AIP on the Pakistani Agosta90B subs. The MESMA is not performing as effectively as it should like DCNS promoted it. On the other hand the PEM fuel cell on the U212 type submarines perform to my knowledge better so it can be expected that also the PEM fuel cell equipped U214 will perform good.

It’s a tough choice for the Pakistani navy now while she knows how MESMA performs.

Nutuk- this is news to us! generally PN sub personnel seem very pleased with their 90Bs!
could you kindly shed some more light on this issue?

Pakistani navy and the Turkish navy exchange a lot of their respective experience. While Turkey was evaluating the 3 candidates during the tender it was natural to ask the Pakistani collegues about their experience with the MESMA equipped Agosta90B submarines. The Pakistani feedback on the MESMA was one of the reasons that DCNS was eliminated and U214 won the tender. What exactly is Pakistan unsatisfaction with the MESMA I don't know in detail, but there are reports that she doesn't function effectively.

Lower indiscretion ratio than fuel cells with some noise issues reported when rising to the surface. Regardless, the U214's chances look dimmer by the day and I don't really see a structural issue with a MESMA+ system for the PN. Spiral upgrades for the system should see these admittedly minor issues resolved. The reason for TKMS winning the TN tender is obviously because of politics and existing infrastructure rather than just the performance of one subsystem on a hull. France recognised the Armenian genocide and Germany has not. The second reason is quite obvious as Golcuk has been building -209 hulls for a decade.

Ofcourse there are more reasons behind, I said one of the reasons!

The latest Milgem photo, the hull construction seems to be finished and in 10 days the hull will be floated on water.

Naval strength to be increased, says Admiral Noman

By Muhammad Anis

ISLAMABAD: Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Noman Bashir on Tuesday maintained that the strength of Pakistan Navy would be enhanced by critically analysing challenges being faced by the country to protect its maritime interests.

“My first priority is to critically analyse all the challenges being faced by the Pakistan Navy to make it even stronger for peace and war,” Naval Chief Admiral Noman Bashir said at the change of command ceremony held here at the Naval Headquarters.

The outgoing naval chief Muhammad Afzal Tahir handed over the command of the Pakistan Navy to his successor Admiral Noman Bashir for next three years. The impressive ceremony was also witnessed by retired naval chiefs, senior officers of the Pakistan Navy and some senior bureaucrats.

Admiral Noman Bashir said the Pakistan Navy was well prepared and equipped to protect the country’s interests in peace and was ready to meet the challenge of war, if it was imposed. “We do not want war but if it is imposed, we are ready to meet the challenge,” he said.

The newly-appointed naval chief pointed out that there were different powers present in the region and Pakistan Navy also needed to show its presence. “I am not saying that we are large in size but we are a balanced navy and need to further enhance its strength,” Admiral Nomal Bashir said.

He said the primary objective before him was that the Pakistan Navy should maintain optimum operational preparedness for all the times. He said despite all financial constraints at national level, the navy was steered well through the turbulent waters and was transformed into a professional and potent force to defend maritime interests of Pakistan.

He observed that despite numerous challenges, Pakistan Navy made significant progress under the command of Admiral Muhammad Afzal Tahir. The outgoing naval chief said that the Pakistan Navy pursued acquisition of major sub-surface, surface and aviation platforms in the last three years. “Owing to our persistent efforts, the government has approved plans for acquisition of German 214 Class submarines to be built at Karachi Shipyard under transfer of technology programme."

He said the Naval Air Arm was being strengthened by acquisition of upgraded P3C Long Range Maritime Patrol aircraft from the US. Under this programme, the Pakistan Navy would start having fleet of nine upgraded and modified P3C aircraft towards the end of year 2009.

yeeeeees i love this very very good news its like gift for me

Its really a great news it will really add a great deal in Pakistan navy arsenal. When this program will start and when it will be completed any details for that ?

none - approving plans is on thing - signing a agreement with the supplier is another.

IMO it was a political statement made at the taking over ceremony.

Here are the some specification of this Submarine

General characteristics
Displacement: 1700 t (surfaced)
Length: 65.0 m
Beam: 6.3 m
Draught: 6.0 m
Propulsion: low noise skew back propeller
Speed: 12 kt surfaced
20 kt submerged
Range: 12,000 miles surfaced
420 nmi @ 8 kt
1248 nmi @ 4 kt
Complement: 5 officers + 22 crew
Armament: (8) 533 mm torpedo tubes, (4) subharpoon-capable

There is one thing missing in the Export Version it lacks the non-magnetic hull (to avoid detection) and other classified technologies.

Due to improvements in the pressure hull materials type 214 can dive more than 250 m 400 m estimated

Type 214 can carry food, fresh water and fuel for 50 days of operation

As Turkey is also interested in these type of subs and Turkey plans to upgrade the current U-214 subs with its own technology it will be very useful for Pakistan to get Turkish Involvement in this project.

Reports indicate that the Turkish Navy has decided to buy 6 Type 214 class air-independent propulsion (AIP) submarines. According to the Turkish Governments Under secretariat for Defence Industries, the 6, Type 214 submarines will be "co-produced" with "maximum local content at Gölcük Naval Shipyard" . Defence Minister Vecdi Gonul has also stated that "Turkish industrial participation in the project would be worth around 80 percent of the total value of the deal". As the Turkish Type 214 will have a significant amount of Turkish indigenous systems (80%) on-board this variant of the Type 214 will be known as the Type 214TN

The Type 214 looks nice, good news for Pakistan if it comes true.

Like Fatman Sir suggested, plans are already there but no contract so far. Lets see where the new admiral takes the PN too?
However the current turmoil the pakistan economy is going trough, it will be some time before we finally give go a head in signing the contract with the germans for the U boat.

Great news !! do we any pic's of it????
