Pakistan's five million missing women

Five million difference in male and female population in a country of 200 million people is not big. Common people say there are more women than men

It’s still significant in terms of the social impact it has. You have to remember Pakistan starts off with more girls at birth, as should most nations, which makes the above disgraceful.
The research does state a number of reasons for the skewed ratio, which is linked to the notion that there are more women.

@Moonlight @Ladyuk

Sisters, most appreciate your views.

Not really surprised, its not just sex selective abortion that goes on my elders who live in the countryside said, whilst growing up dead bodies of young girls and women would turn up. They were not from their villages, no idea why they were killed, honour killing or otherwise. The elders would carry out a janaza and then bury them in the village cemetery.

Then there is the issue of women in pakistan committing suicide usually as a last resort to get away from a abusive husband/in-laws. From my observation these thing happen mostly in the countryside and since there are no accurate records kept it's difficult to compute how many are honour killed off and how many commit suicide. Then there is the issue of domestic violence which again from my own observations is widespread in pakistan especially in the rural areas and women have died due to this too.

So there are many reasons for the missing 5 million women not just abortion. Someone commented that it's only a small figure , but if you think about it 5 million men are not going to be able to find a wife, bearing in mind some men 8n pakistan take more than 1 wife which means in reality many more than 5 million men not being able to get married.

This of course creates a unstable society and much fitna, the key to remedy this would be education and a functioning justice system, 2 things which are missing in pakistan.

Social scientists are also beginning to detect a trend of sex-selective practices at birth in Pakistan. This is not to say that the practice of sex selection is widespread, although female infanticide, despite having declined in recent years, remains common. A deep-rooted preference for sons over daughters is pervasive in Pakistan, as is in India (though not with the same intensity) (Hina Sheikh)

Very informative and interesting topic. We have our issues as a society and as a country I am not saying we are out of the cesspool but my two cents:

But what she mentions is in my opinion intellectual dishonesty, I have huge social circle and through profession connected to people across the globe, I wont say it hasn't happened totally but gender selection in Pakistan is a Taboo there are both legal and religious considerations and repercussions.

Our religion absolutely prohibits any such act, not that I am aware of any in Pakistan.

I fail to comprehend the words "detect a trend of sex-selective practices at birth in Pakistan" is there any indication that people opt to murder their daughters at birth, really? These west boot licking people.

There is of course the preference for a son, sons are given priority over daughter this will only change with time it is the same across time for all of humanity.

However, among the more educated society in the urban areas thing have improved significantly I am sure once education and I mean education not literacy is wide spread with lot of economic activity we will move in the right direction.

Besides Ahadith do mention about women population growing exponentially.

We in no way can be compared to what Chinese have done during one child era or what Indians are doing, sex is determined between 18-21 week of the pregnancy, and any abortion at that time is not just a darned clot of blood.

@waz Thanks for this thread brother, it was very insightful too.

In addition to what’s already been said here. A healthy sex ratio goes a long way in promoting societal harmony, stability, and lesser propensity to injustices.

I’ve always doubted why our ratio was skewed despite the explicit teachings of the Prophet pbuh on these matters and the numerous statements in favour of raising daughters granted us in Islam. I always suspected that it was likely only census errors due to women in certain parts not being open to participate. And also the skew of male urban migrants. But the deaths due to childbirth was something that hadn’t crossed my mind.

Improving and lowering infant mortality rate as well as death due to childbirth should be a serious focus alongside improving the female literacy rate. On the latter I’ve once or twice said that it is a serious issue, and if addressed it would make the whole of Pakistan financially more viable, it might go some way in revitalising our economy and certain export sectors tomorrow, as well as the promise it brings to us in the form of improved future generations raised by those same women.

As for selection and preference of males, this is a moral evil and outrage on a personal level, but when extrapolated and if this behaviour is adopted by a society, it’s ruinous. Just look at the social ills resulting from China’s one child policy and skewed ratio.

the meaning of Hadees that women will increase near end of times is not related to numbers but it means that they will get dominance in society as happening these days when women are occupying higher posts and doing jobs which one cannot image in past, also feminists are gaining more power these days,
