LAHORE – The country’ first underground water reservoir system to store water from seasonal rains and reduce flooding has been launched in the Punjab capital city.

The project, titled “Monsoon Underground Water Reservoir”, took three months to be completed at Lahore’s Lawrence Garden.
Built at the cost of Rs. 149 million, the water tank can hold up to 1.5 million gallons of water after a heavy downpour.

It is modelled after reservoirs in Japan and the United States, which offer an effective use of water resources and disaster prevention especially in metropolitan areas

Excellent and a much needed initiative.

This not a new invention. There are many ways to filter the water naturally using plants and stones/pebbles.

We need a new Water conservation policy.

Government must take these steps to implement this policy.

  1. Media (Print media, TV/Radio, Social media) campaign to conserve water.
  2. New technology for gray and black water treatment plant.
  3. Work on Water reservoirs and rain harvesting system.
  4. More than half of the irrigation water is wasted due to poorly managed irrigation system and inadequate water infrastructure.
  5. Money for Bhasha dam should collected and building should start soon.
  6. We also need small water storage dams countrywide on a fast track basis. We have a potential to build 800 small dams/water reservoirs. There is a immediate need to build 100 dams in Punjab, 60 in Sindh, 40 in KPK and 30 in Balochistan.
  7. We can build underground and above ground water reservoirs, reservoirs with floating wetlands can be introduce to prevent water evaporations. Qanat system or canal system can be used to distribute water to remote areas
  8. For the coastal areas in Sindh and Balochistan, Government need to introduce Newest desalination technology.
  9. Karachi needs a mega desalination plant. Also, since Zardari is going to build a new city zulfiqarab in Sindh coastal area, there should also be a desalination plant.

Already suggested this few times in last ten years.

whats the use if people not going to clean these reservoirs. These will be filled with trash in few years and gone. They were used to underground sewerage system most probably built by the great British Empire. Pakistan people were not able to take care of it and now it is gone. filled with trash and now under rebuilt streets and nalas again and again instead of just cleaning the old system. Probably to reward relatives with new contracts of construction.

That's not how it works

This is really very encouraging news. All we hear on TV is that Buzdar has to go. But the good work does not seem to be getting as much airtime. This project will go a long way in making the city more livable. I hope it gets replicated everywhere in the country, including the forsaken city of Karachi.
