What's new

Pakistan's current account has again gone deeply negative - approaching 5% of GDP now: Dr Atif Mian

No, Dr Atif Mian has been trying to help this govt since August 2018. He even agreed to be part of govts economic advisory council to help Pakistan come out of this doom and gloom. But his very presence was resisted by the people of Pakistan and he was booted out with disgust, along with Harvard and London School of Economics experts that joined because of Dr Atif Mian's macro economic expertise
I think our nation has a memory of a goldfish. He and his team were removed because of their view on CPEC loans and having the details transparent to IMF and it happened right after his tweets.. The ahmedi card was just played to validate and get political mileage out of the decision.

Sir ap nay comment galdi mai kar diya.

It is not fair that you expect someone to raise our inflows by 100% in 3 1/2 years.

Shukar Karen at least our inflows are improving, agar 2018 wali low inflows and relaxed monetary and fiscal policy kay sath if we were hit with this kind of commodity inflation cycle CAD 30b+ hona tha easy 😊

Not to forget the 2 billion + kay corona kay teekay lagaye hain (not covered by financing).

nothing against dr atif mian, he is a genius of his field, but the guy who left because atif mian was fired is a huge hypocrite. the guy is living in a country that bombed the shit out of muslim countries, as part of nato, and murdered hundreds and thousands of them, and yet, he suddenly remembers his morals when one person is fired.

Professor Atif Mian's criticism of Pakistan's economy is partially valid but his pessimism is unwarranted. He is working with flawed data based on an economic census conducted more than 15 years ago. This data does not truly reflect current economic activities, per capita incomes and productivity. Pakistani bureaucracy needs to ensure that the underlying data for GDP and productivity is regularly updated to inform businessmen, investors, lenders and policymakers. Pakistan is also significantly boosting its foreign exchange earnings through exports and remittances from overseas workers. The issue of reliance on expensive fossil fuel imports is also being addressed by building more hydro, nuclear and renewable energy. At the same time, indigenous coal-fired power plants are also being added. Unlike Atif Mian, I do see light at the end of the tunnel.
