Pakistan's army calls for India talks

Stunning news. Why is it not in the headlines? What a massive re-orientation can take place if there is a mutual agreement on Siachen, and it goes forward to a mutual agreement on force levels. Unfortunately troop levels in Kashmir will remain high unless there is agreement on the management of non-state actors. And there is unlikely to be agreement there for two reasons.

Presently, about 20 km.

(A new GHQ is being built further away
.)

As usual, the clueless is shooting from the hip and continuing to be misinformed and spreading misinformation.:P

Like I said GHQ is being built closer.

Slowly but surely, reality is dawning on our Pak friends.

The sooner the inevitable is realized, the better it is for our peace.

A sincere request to fellow Indians.

Please stop writing in that this is a lesson to Pakistan or that this is some kind of victory for India. Neither is true.

The two countries had to come to their senses and agree to stop this madness about Siachen. We should be very happy that Pakistan has shown the lead, and we should now be praying earnestly that someone, somewhere in New Delhi is preparing frantically to meet this gesture.

Granted, this is a news report, and governments don't act on news reports. There is still NO HARM in India taking note of this, and making necessary overtures, irrespective of when the official Pakistani move happens.

If, and when, a Siachen agreement happens, we gain millions of dollars in expenditure, dozens of lives a year, and, most important, we stop polluting the sources of the rivers flowing out of the glacier. The situation is already very, very close to an environmental disaster of major proportions.

That is the peace point of view. There is also a war point of view.

We save enormous amounts out of the military budget.
We save crack regiments and the best military personnel.
We gain highly experienced soldiers with unique experience of very high altitude campaigning and battlefield survival skills.
We save effort and attention for the western and northern boundaries.

Nothing but positive things can come out of this.

Think about it again. If this rapprochement proves to be useful for it, what do you think Pakistan will do? Will it surprise you that it will seek more such gains, and think of some other similar step? Or at least listen with keen attention while India makes a useful suggestion.

This is a fantastic moment of time, granted that nothing formal has happened yet.

Let us celebrate in muted tones and in anticipation of happy days ahead of us.

Just tuppence worth from a Joe in the street.

This is assuming

So maybe you can go there and help them with the task, I am not really feeling like attacking Pakistan tonite.

Or maybe you misunderstood me, by "our peace" I meant Indian's peace; I am pretty sure you can manage to find your country's peace by yourself, it's doubtful we can help you.

can u plz enlighten us on those two reasons?

Reason 1: Frankly, terrorism and terrorist activity in J&K is too good a force multiplier for any commander to shut it off without overwhelming advantages to compensate. And they achieve it without a penny from its own budgets.

Reason 2: It is the view of many that the terrorists are out of control of the ISI already. They are capable of acting independent of the ISI and the Pakistan Army, and it is just the great good fortune of ISI, the Pakistan Army, and Pakistan itself that this has not happened yet.

Good call by General Kayani and I respect him for that - But I would say a big nooo - Bleed Pakistan of its defence spending - even if it is few million dollars out of $6.5 bill. spend, it is alright. They can't divert these funds to buy couple of planes. I read somewhere that Pakistan spends $60 mil while India spends around $200. Considering the MOD numbnuts returning defence spending dollars every year, the $200 mill is well spent.

Now the Pakistan army will be forced to spend more to avoid furture casualties, the glacier defence spend will increase for Pakistan. Hoping the Pakistan army does spend as I do not want any casualties of the brave soldiers either from Pakistan or India.

You are right, if we resolve siachen.
The money reserved for siachen will go down for purchases of planes and other military equipment which will be used to harm India in next war.
Its better to keep them occupied in siachen.

This is monumental. There have been more than a dozen efforts and negotiations already by civilian governments. Invariably there was a counter-response by the Pakistan Army to negate them. The attacks '89, SSG attack in '95, 99 and several others were right before negotiations as though to prove Pakistan army will not accept India's dominance of heights.

Now Pakistan Army chief calls for talks, this is a big change and only factor to have changed is the relative strength of both armies. Probably a signal even the army is ready to concede Siachen to India, ow is the best chance to settle siachen, I agree.

Hey, you can enjoy the sun while its shining, can you not.

.
pakistan army will only leave siachen if india leaves siachen and leave the area as it was long time ago, or else i dont think there will be any negotiations
