Pakistani troops have fired shots into the air to stop US troops crossing into the South Waziristan region of Pakistan, local officials say.

Reports say nine US helicopters landed on the Afghan side of the border and US troops then tried to cross the border.

South Waziristan is one of the main areas from which Islamist militants launch attacks into Afghanistan.

The incident comes amid growing anger in Pakistan over increasingly aggressive US attacks along the border.

The latest confrontation began at around midnight, local people say.

They say seven US helicopter gunships and two troop-carrying Chinook helicopters landed in the Afghan province of Paktika near the Zohba mountain range.

US troops from the Chinooks then tried to cross the border. As they did so, Pakistani paramilitary soldiers at a checkpoint opened fire into the air and the US troops decided not to continue forward, local Pakistani officials say.

Reports say the firing lasted for several hours. Local people evacuated their homes and tribesmen took up defensive positions in the mountains.

The incident happened close to the town of Angoor Adda, some 30km (20 miles) from Wana, the main town of South Waziristan.

A Pakistani military spokesman in Islamabad confirmed that there was firing but denied that Pakistani troops were involved.

Diplomatic fury

It emerged last week that US President George W Bush has in recent months authorised military raids against militants inside Pakistan without prior approval from Islamabad.

The BBC's Barbara Plett in Islamabad says there is a growing American conviction that Pakistan is either unwilling or unable to eliminate militant sanctuaries in its border area.

There have been a number of missile attacks aimed at militants in Pakistan territory in recent weeks.

Pakistan reacted with diplomatic fury when US helicopters landed troops in South Waziristan on 3 September. It was the first ground assault by US troops in Pakistan.

Locals in the Musa Nikeh area said American soldiers attacked a target with gunfire and bombs, and said women and children were among some 20 civilians who died in the attack.

In the latest incident, the tribesmen say they grabbed their guns and took up defensive positions after placing their women and children out of harm's way.

Pakistan's army has warned that the aggressive US policy will widen the insurgency by uniting the tribesmen with the Taleban.

Last week the army chief declared that Pakistan would defend the country's territorial integrity at all cost, although the prime minister has since said this would have to be through diplomatic channels rather than military retaliation.

I'm glad they showed restraint and the Americans backed off this time with their unprovoked aggression. No one wants to fight the wrong enemy here. But the Americans have totally lost sight of the target!

Exactly and the time has come to show them what it is like to turn an ally into a foe and one which has the world seventh largest army backed by armed tribal people of Pakistan.

you are 100% right my friend and as you said its time to tell them that you have seen the friendship and love of Pakistani people but you have not seen the hatred and enmity of PAKISTAN yet.

Why fire in the air? Should have fired on them. They are the one that illegally cross our border without Pak Gov Approval. Its fully legal to fire up on them according to any international law's and standards. They have killed our soldiers in past havn't they?, and later just said sorry. Shoot em all down, and just say "Sorry, we thought it was the terrorists". If we do this 5-6 times, they will Stop (if they don't stop, then you already know that the war has begun). Grow some F...... BALLS... Mark my Words "Next time they wont come with only choppers", so we need to be 101% ready to face the growing threat.

1. Cut their food and oil supply and everything else that comes from PK + electricity that is sent to US and NATO bases on expense of the Pak people....
2. Shoot em down 5-6 times, and use the excuse tactics "sorry, we thought it was the terrorists"..
3. Spend some billions of dollars on Media worldwide.
4. Contact all Pak community leaders worldwide to gather economical and media support.
5. Join forces with IRAN, And all tribes that are against Us.
6. Stop the f... war on terror, and start fighting the KAFIR's.
7. Get Russia and china signedup on our side.
8. Use Nuke deterrent and get some long range missiles.
9. Join Iran to blow the hell out of ISRAELian M.F!
10. Give Nuke's to all Muslim countries for $$$ and use it to buy best goods from all over.
11. India may try to take advantage of this, so line up 100k forces along the boarder and
50-60 short and long range missiles with WARHEADs targeting every military, airbase,
major city in India, and give them no excuse. If they try as much cross 1m over our
boarder, Fire em all. That should keep them from taking any sort of advantage of
this situation. They will not dare to think of taking advantage. Desperate times demand
desperate measures..
12. Point Some short/long range missiles with warheads on NATO and US bases in
Afghanistan + Karzai's residens, iraq + all their naval vessels in Pak, indian and gulf
region + Israel (Agar marre ge to Sabb ko le karr marre ge)...
13. Grow some balls.. War has started what ever way you look at it. Some will say doing
all this is declaration of war, and a war we cant win. But if we do all i have mentioned
in this list, do you think any country in the world would want to start a war with
PAKISTAN?
14. We need a Strong Leader. Eliminate all old, and get new Strong leaders.
15. Love and support your country no matter what.

With such measures, i am sure no FORCE on earth would Seriously Attack Pakistan.

Its not that easy.

The American didn't end up firing upon us this time. I'm sure if they would've persisted, then we would've fired upon them.

You're taking on the freakin US of A. We should fire back... But it would be better if they can be convinced not to fire at us in the first place.

Confusion Over Reports of Clash at Afghan Border

By ISMAIL KHAN and PIR ZUBAIR SHAH
Published: September 15, 2008

PESHAWAR, Pakistan — Confusion swirled over a possible incursion by United States forces into Pakistani territory in South Waziristan on Monday.
PakistanLocal residents and a Pakistani government official said two American helicopters were repulsed when Pakistani soldiers fired at them, but the Pakistani and United States military publicly denied any such incident, and a Pakistani intelligence official said that an American helicopter had mistakenly crossed the border briefly, leading Pakistani ground forces to fire into the air.

The Pakistani government official, a senior official who deals with the tribal areas and who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that American troops had tried to land in South Waziristan at a town called Angoor Adda, in a mountainous region with thick forest on the border with Afghanistan.

“Two Chinooks tried to land last night between 12:30 a.m. and 1:00 a.m.,” the official said. They were fired upon by Pakistani troops, forcing the helicopters to return to the Afghan side of the border, the official said.

The official said that locals, incensed at American incursions, also fired on the helicopters. “Our forces fired at them and seeing this, the local people also came out and started shooting,” the official said.

According to one local resident, who gave his name as Mohammad Yaar, two helicopters crossed into the Pakistani territory and were forced to turn back when it came under fire from the Pakistani forces. He said that two Pakistani jet fighters later made flights into the area.

Rear Adm. Gregory Smith, a spokesman for Central Command, said no American helicopters or other forces were involved in any such incident.

Major Murad Khan, a military spokesperson in Rawalpindi, the headquarters of the Pakistani military, said, “There has been no border violation and we have not fired on the Americans.”

Tensions have been mounting since the United States intensified its campaign in Pakistan’s border areas against militants suspected of having ties to Al Qaeda and the Taliban.

The United States contends that the militants use the border areas as a refuge to stage attacks against American and NATO soldiers in southern Afghanistan.

A flurry of missile strikes inside Pakistan fired from American pilotless aircraft and the first publicly acknowledged ground operation by American Special Operations forces against Taliban operating inside Pakistan earlier this month has caused grave concern in Pakistan, and its military chief, Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, has said that Pakistan would safeguard its territorial integrity.

According to senior American officials, President Bush secretly approved orders in July that for the first time allow American Special Operations forces to carry out ground assaults inside Pakistan without the prior approval of the Pakistani government.

The classified orders signal a watershed for the Bush administration after nearly seven years of trying to work with Pakistan to combat the Taliban and Al Qaeda, and after months of high-level stalemate about how to challenge the militants’ increasingly secure base in Pakistan’s tribal areas.

Ismail Khan reported from Peshawar, Pakistan, and Pir Zubair Shah from Islamabad. Salman Masood contributed reporting from Islamabad and Graham Bowley from New York.

Pak troops did not fire on US helicopters: Pentagon

WASHINGTON/ISLAMABAD: The Pentagon on Monday denied reports that Pakistani troops fired on two US military helicopters after they crossed into Pakistan from Afghanistan and forced them to turn back.

"I've checked into that and find it to be a spurious report," Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman told reporters. "Did not happen. I've checked all the places that would know about something like that and it doesn't appear to be accurate."

Earlier in the day, reports quoting Pakistani security officials said that firing by Pakistani troops forced US military helicopters to turn back to Afghanistan after they crossed into Pakistani territory in the early hours of Monday. ( Watch )

The incident took place near Angor Adda, a village in the tribal region of South Waziristan where US commandos in helicopters raided a suspected al-Qaida and Taliban camp earlier this month.

"The US choppers came into Pakistan by just 100 to 150 metres at Angor Adda. Even then our troops did not spare them, opened fire on them and they turned away," said one security official.

Pakistan is a crucial US ally in its war on terrorism, and its support is key to the success of Western forces trying to stabilise Afghanistan.

But Washington has become impatient over Islamabad's response to the threat from al-Qaida and Taliban fighters in Pakistan's tribal regions on the border. At least 20 people, including women and children, were killed in the South Waziristan raid earlier this month, sparking outrage in Pakistan and prompting a diplomatic protest.

Pakistani army chief General Ashfaq Kayani said in a strongly worded statement last week that Pakistan would not allow foreign troops onto its soil and Pakistan's sovereignty and territorial integrity would be defended at all costs.

Another security official said on Monday that US armoured vehicles were also seen moving on the Afghan side of the border, while US warplanes were seen overhead. He said Pakistani soldiers sounded a bugle call and fired in the air, forcing the helicopters to return to Afghan territory.

Military spokesman Major Murad Khan confirmed that there had been shooting. But he said the American helicopters had not crossed into Pakistani airspace and Pakistani troops were not responsible for the firing.

"The US choppers were there at the border, but they did not violate our airspace," Khan said. "We confirm that there was a firing incident at the time when the helicopters were there, but our forces were not involved."

Lies

Officially both Pakistan and the US have denied any such incident took place, though Pakistan has said there was some 'firing', though not by Pakistani forces.

The newspaper reports are based on unofficial interviews with officials and tribesmen in the area.

If there was no incursion why did the Americans flee?

Whatever happened, there is no need to escalate the situation by officially acknowledging it and resorting to diplomatic chest thumping.

Bar the tension over cross border raids, Pakistan and the US are on the same side when it comes to fighting terrorism - we differ on how to accomplish our goals.

The coming days will illustrate what US policy is going to be, and whether future US and/or Pakistan's policies were impacted by recent events.

If you go through google news you will find more than a handful of western commentators going WTF at Bush's decision to attack Pakistan.

So I guess its not all a lost cause. We shouldn't be sounding the war drums just yet.
