They get a paid holiday, why should it be a "National Holiday". Is Eid a national holiday in india?
Yes it is!! And you would be surprised but lots of Hindus celebrate Eid with Muslims and like wise lots of Muslims celebrate Holi and Diwali with Hindus.

It is good if it happens like this but then Muslims are 13.4% (as per 2001 census) of Indian population so a public holiday on two Eids make some sense, though I still don't agree and consider these holidays waste of time and loss of economic activity.

Than this thread should be closed because a quick Google search shows that it is already an optional holiday.

Last time I checked Horus did not run Pakistan and people had the freedom to discuss things on this forum regardless of his opinion. Why should this thread be closed?

The Hindu community has demanded of the government to declare a public holiday on the annual festival of Diwali.

The Pakistan Hindu Council in a statement issued on Friday said declaring a public holiday would reflect a soft image of Pakistan and would prove fruitful in promoting interfaith harmony. “It would let the Hindu community feel honoured,” said the council chief Dr Ramesh Kumar, while addressing a meeting of the council held to review the preparations for the festival across the country.

Diwali, he added, was an official holiday in more than 10 countries, including Malaysia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Mauritius, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, Suriname, Singapore, Fiji and India.

"Following the footsteps of the previous government, the present government must carry on the practice of presenting a special gift to the community in the form of an economic package," said Ramesh while demanding to provide advance salaries to Hindu employees of both public and private sector.

you are mistaken, everybody likes holidays. :)
I was pointing to the fact that in UK, there are 8 holidays per year, 5 of them related to christianity and none related to religious minority.

We got 14 holidays in India. Now I know 14 is a big number, may be we should have less holidays. Does it mean we do away will all muslim/sikh/christian/buddist/jain holidays? I dont think thats fair.

Many multinational companies have a fixed number of holidays their employees can take. So if there are a large number of public holidays(India, Japan - yes, they have more public holidays than India), their paid time off is reduced. Countries with fewer public holidays get more paid time off(UK). So the total number of holidays remain the same. I like the benefit of taking holidays any time I want - except that school holidays dictate when I can actually take holidays.

I like the holidays here where secular bank holidays and even Good Fridays and Easter holidays fall either on Friday or Monday giving us long weekends. This is better than some random holiday in the middle of the week.
On the other hand I find the blue laws in the UK irritating. Not having an option to keep the store open on Sundays doesn't seem to be right.

What it has to do with equal rights? There are no public holidays for such events in US, UK, or other countries. Minorities are most welcome to work during public holidays if they don't want to take the day off.

Ideologically Pakistani see their country as an antithesis of Hinduism, you are quite funny to even compare it with UK and US.

I wont second holiday option nationwide. Hindus can be given day off to celebrate their ritual but not the whole nation. Please remember that if u announce public holiday on Diwali then government will have to do so for all minorities on their rituals.
I am serving in international environment where minorities are given off days to celebrate their special occasions but not the whole nation.
(With due respect to Dear Hindus and other Minorities)

Christians and Sikhs are around 2% of our population, even their major festivals are public holidays nationwide.

India and Pakistan can't be compared in this sphere. Pakistan is an Islami Jamhuriyaat.
Let's leave it at that.
