KURRAM: During a military operation in Kurram on Wednesday, at least five militants were killed, DawnNews reported.

The incident took place in Jogi, an area in central Kurram.

The early morning clashes also left two security personnel and eight militants injured.

Pakistani security forces are conducting an operation in the tribal areas to eliminate the unlawful activities of the militants.

50 suspected militants arrested during search operation in Khyber Agency of FATA:

Security Forces (SFs) on March 20 demolished the house of Amir Faqir, a local ‘commander’ of Lashkar-e-Islam (LI) and also arrested at least 50 suspected militants in the Shalobar area of Khyber Agency in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), reports Dawn. The political administration ordered the residents of Shalobar area to vacate their houses so that a peaceful search operation can be launched in the area. The Khasadar Force made announcements through loudspeakers in Nao Gazi Baba and Mashomano Adeera localities of Shalobar, advising people to vacate the area so that Security Forces (SFs) could carry out a search operation.

Meanwhile, thousands of people are trapped in the Bara tehsil (revenue unit) because of the ongoing military operation. All roads are blocked and there is no transport for people to get out of the conflict zone. SFs recently launched the offensive against the LI in Malikdinkhel, Sipah, Qambarkhel and Akakhel areas. Affected people say that security forces have blocked all routes making it impossible for the thousands of families to leave for safe places. They said that Sipah and Malikdinkhel were considered to be strongholds of the LI and the operation was being carried out within a 30 kilometres radius of Bara.

Officials in the FATA Disaster Management Authority (FDMA) said that 9,233 families had so far reached the Jalozai relief camp in Nowshera. The situation is very critical. Thousands of IDPs immediately need tents, food and other goods, said an official at the camp where around 16,000 displaced families from different parts of Fata have been living for some time. The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) is pitching new tents in the camp to accommodate fresh IDPs.

Mangal Bagh reported killed in Tirah: Police chief

PESHAWAR:
There are conflicting reports about the death of the dreaded commander of the Lashkar-e-Islam extremist group, which has unleashed a reign of terror in the Khyber tribal region.

The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa police chief said on Monday that they had reports of the death of Mangal Bagh Afridi in a clash – however, the provincial chief minister said that the reports were ‘unconfirmed’.

Mangal Bagh was reportedly wounded in a suicide attack on a mosque in Tirah, a remote valley in Khyber Agency, earlier this month. A political administration official had confirmed that Bagh’s four-wheeler was present outside the mosque when the attack took place – but he escaped unharmed.

The Darra Adamkhel chapter of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, which is at odds with Lashkar-e-Islam, had claimed responsibility for the suicide attack, saying that Mangal Bagh was the target.

The provincial inspector-general of police said on Monday that Mangal Bagh has reportedly been killed.

“Though tribal areas are not my domain, we have reports that he’s been killed in fighting,” Akbar Khan Hoti told journalists after attending a cricket match in Peshawar. “We expected that he’s dead,” he said without giving details. However, Chief Minister Ameer Haider Hoti said the reports of Mangal Bagh’s death were yet to be confirmed. “We don’t have any confirmation of his death,” he told the media in Peshawar.

Security forces have been conducting sporadic operations in the Bara subdivision of Khyber Agency against Mangal Bagh and his loyalists since 2009. The 4th phase of the operation, codenamed Biya Darghalam (Here I come again) started on March 12. And security officials claimed to have killed 25 militants since.

Elsewhere in the region, at least 8 people were killed and 15 wounded in clashes between security forces and militants, officials said on Monday.Four militants and one soldier were killed when militants stormed a security checkpoint late Sunday in Miramshah, the main town of North Waziristan Agency.

The military retaliated with an assault early Monday on suspected militant hideouts outside the town,leaving three dead and 15 wounded, security officials said.

Peshawar - Pakistan Army has concluded its operation Zulfiqar-II in Ludha division of South Waziristan in northwestern tribal region near Afghan border, said a statement issued here on Thursday.

According to the statement, 10 militants were killed and 20 others injured while 7 security personnel also injured in the operation. Beside, weapons worth millions of rupees were also recovered.

The operation was initiated two weeks ago.

3 bombers killed in Zakhakhel

LANDIKOTAL: Three alleged Lashkar-e-Islam fighters were killed in Bazaar Zakhakhel on Wednesday.

Volunteers of Tawheedul Islam (TI) reportedly killed the alleged LI fighters who were suspected to be involved in bomb blasts in the area. The three persons, including an alleged commander, had been arrested a few days back, local and administration sources said.

TI volunteers had killed three persons in a similar case a few days back, the local sources added.

Separately, security forces busted six suspects from Khugakhel area of Landikotal during a search operation.

18 militants, 3 soldiers killed in Orakzai clashes

The attack took place at a paramilitary check post in Khadizai area, Orakzai agency.

At least three soldiers were killed after dozens of Taliban militants stormed a check post in Pakistan s northwest tribal region near the Afghan border, officials said Saturday.



The attack took place at a paramilitary check post in Khadizai area on the outskirts of Kalaya, the main town in the lawless Orakzai district, a senior military officer said.



"Three soldiers were martyred when Taliban armed with guns and rockets launched an attack overnight," he said, adding that several dozen insurgents were involved in the raid.



Another official said Pakistani security forces retaliated and killed more than 18 militants, but there was no independent confirmation of the toll.



Khadizai is located in Upper Orakzai most of which is in Taliban hands and is the scene of frequent clashes between security forces and Islamist militants while government troops are in control of its lower reaches.

24 militants, eight security personnel killed Gunfight in S. Waziristan, ambush in Orakzai

March 24: At least 24 militants and eight security personnel were killed in clashes in South Waziristan and Orakzai Agencies on Saturday, sources said. Eight troops and four militants were injured.

Gunbattles erupted when security forces during a search operation came across the militants loyal to Hakimullah Mehsud in Shin Warsak and Taza Ghundai areas of South Waziristan.

According to sources, there were intelligence reports that supporters of Hakimullah Mehsud, head of the banned Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan, had set up hideouts in an area dominated by the Ahmadzai Wazir tribe. The area is largely controlled by Mullah Nazir, a pro-government militant ‘commander’.

The sources said that Mehsud’s supporters along with three militant ‘commanders’ – Abbas, Javid and Noor Islam – had relocated to Shin Warsak and Taza Ghundai areas under an agreement with Mullah Nazir.

The agreement was signed about four months ago. The three commanders, who belong to the Ahmadzai Wazir tribe, were expelled from the area in 2007 after clashes with the Nazir’s group.

Security forces launched a search operation in these areas before dawn which continued till 6 in the evening. Clashes took place during the search operation.

An official said that five security personnel were killed and four others injured. Independent sources in the area reported that the army had suffered 10 casualties.

Officials said that 12 militants died in the gunbattle. They said eight bodies of the militants were brought to the military base in Wana.

Security forces also fired heavy artillery from their bases in Zari Noor and Wana, targeting militant positions.

In Orakzai Agency, 12 militants were killed and four injured when fighting erupted in the restive region’s Khadezai area.

Officials said three soldiers were also killed and four others injured in the clashes which started after a patrolling party came under attack.

The slain soldiers were identified as Saleem Khan, Rashid and Amanullah. The injured soldiers were shifted to Kohat. Officials said that a vehicle loaded with explosives was also destroyed.

BARA AKAKHEL: Eight militants including an important commander died on Saturday whilst making a bomb in the area of Bara Akakhel, Khyber agency, DawnNews reported.

‘Security concerns’: On Pakistan Day, Balochistan blacked out

ISLAMABAD:
Not a single person received a ‘Happy Pakistan Day’ text message across Balochistan on Friday – and not necessarily because none were sent.

In an effort “to keep a check on militants in the province,” the government on Friday shut down cellular phone services in Balochistan, officials said. Landlines and Internet services were functional though.

“Cellular services were suspended from 8am to midnight to implement the national security policy,” Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Chairman Dr Mohammad Yasin told The Express Tribune.

The home department had requested the interior ministry to shut down cellular services, in an effort to thwart militant activities, said an official from the Balochistan Governor House.

Interior Minister Rehman Malik subsequently directed the ministry of information technology to ask PTA to shut down mobile phone services on Pakistan Day, the official added.

Javed Ahmed, public relations officer (PRO) to the Balochistan governor, confirmed to The Express Tribune that cellular services were suspended in the province on Friday on the government’s directives.

Condemnation

“I could not wish my family members on Pakistan Day,” said Jamhoori Watan Party leader Shahid Khan Bugti while speaking to The Express Tribune. He said he has been trying to contact family members all day, but in vain.

The step is against the will of Pakistan’s founders who carved out an independent state where rule of law could be supreme, said Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid Senator Rubina Irfan.

Officials associated with the chief minister and home secretary’s offices informed The Express Tribune, through landlines, that locals expressed their concerns over the recent development.

Locals visited the offices, despite Friday being an official holiday, to protest against the shutdown.

Ruling Pakistan Peoples Party’s MNA from Quetta Ayatullah Durrani, however, denied that the service suspension was for security reasons.

“The government blocked cellular services to replace the old communication system,” he said. “PTA has been directed to replace the system as soon as possible,” he added while speaking to The Express Tribune.

Interior ministry officials were tight-lipped over the issue and Interior Secretary Siddique-e-Akbar did not respond to text messages about the shutdown.

3 FC men killed, 7 injured

Despite the security measures, three paramilitary personnel were killed, and seven others injured, at a pre-dawn attack, allegedly launched by Taliban militants in Sheerani district, about 350 kilometres from Quetta.

At least four security personnel went missing after the attack and are believed to have been kidnapped by the militants.

The alleged militants, believed to be members of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), ambushed a Frontier Corps (FC) Balochistan security check post in Sheerani, sources said. The area borders the Federally Administered Tribal Areas.

A senior official confirmed the incident and said militants from across the border opened indiscriminate fire at the check post, killing three FC men on the spot injuring seven others.

“Four FC men went missing after the deadly attack,” sources in security forces said.

“The incident took place in the early hours of Friday and the attackers were activists of TTP,” an official of Balochistan government said, adding that the bodies of slain personnel were first shifted to Zhob and then sent to their ancestral areas for burial.

Local sources, however, said that four FC personnel were killed in the ambush. Another source claimed that two security men were killed by their captors when they were being taken to tribal areas.

No group claimed responsibility for the attack till the filing of this report.

‘Celebrations’

Meanwhile, Pakistan Army and Frontier Corps (FC) held different functions, including sports events in Quetta, Gwadar, Loralai, Khuzdar, Chaman, Pasni, Kech and other townships to mark Pakistan Day.

Chief Minister Nawab Aslam Raisani inaugurated a festival arranged by FC at Nawab Noroz Khan Stadium, and hoisted the Pakistani flag.

Meanwhile, Balochistan Assembly Speaker Aslam Bhootani and Provincial Minister Ali Madad Jatak led separate peace walks, from Balochistan Assembly and Saryab Road, to Ayub Stadium in the provincial capital.

Pakistan Army kills 10 militants in Waziristan.

Atleast 10 militant were killed and more than 20 were wounded in a security forces operation in South Waziristan tribal region. Security forces told KUNA (Kuwait News Agency) that security forces backed by helicopter gunships were conducting operation in Laddah district THe sources added that several militant hideouts were destroyed.

The clash is still going on and seven soldiers were wounded. The forces had confiscated ammunition and weapons including Anti Aircraft guns, missiles and bullets.

Six militants held in Kurram operation

PARACHINAR, March 25: Security forces arrested six militants and recovered huge cache of arms and ammunition from their possession during a search operation in Kurram Agency on Sunday morning, official sources said.

They said that security forces raided a hideout of militants in Kurt, a village of central Kurram, on a tip off and arrested six militants. They said that a large quantity of explosives, detonators, detonating cords and various kinds of small arms were also recovered from the hideout.

They said that the seized arms included several lethal automatic weapons. The arrested militants were shifted to an undisclosed location for interrogation, they added.

The sources said that the explosives were presumably meant for targeting convoy of security forces.

They said that the arrested militants belonged to Hafiz Daulat group, a local militant outfit affiliated with defunct Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan.

Kurt village of Kurram tribal region is near the border of Hangu district, a settled area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, that witnessed sectarian unrest in the recent past.

Official sources claimed that terrorists were flushed out from the area during military operation ‘Koh-i-Sofaid’, launched in July last year.

Two soldiers, 21 militants killed in Orakzai clashes

PESHAWAR: Dozens of militants attacked a Pakistani paramilitary checkpoint overnight, killing two soldiers and sparking clashes which left up to 21 of the militants dead, officials said Friday.

Security officials claimed the militants were killed when troops retaliated with artillery and heavy weapons, but no independent confirmation of the death toll was possible in an area cut off to journalists and aid workers.

The attack took place in a militant hotspot of Orakzai tribal district when a group of more than 50 militants attacked a checkpost in the Khadizai area, around 75 kilometres southwest of Kalaya town.

“The attack came at around 1:00 am. The militants killed two soldiers and injured 11. We retaliated and killed 21 militants,” a senior security official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

“The clash continued for around two hours,” he added.

A local administration official said the injured soldiers and dead bodies were later flown by helicopter to a military hospital.

Khadizai is in Upper Orakzai, most of which lies in Taliban hands and is the scene of frequent clashes between security forces and Islamist militants.

Pakistan’s seven tribal districts near the Afghan border are rife with homegrown insurgents.

Islamist militants have killed more than 4,900 people across Pakistan since government troops raided the Red Mosque (Lal Masjid) in Islamabad in July 2007.
