American and Pakistani officials say Pakistani forces have arrested a handful of al Qaida suspects at the CIA's request and allowed the US access to the detainees.

That could mark a turning point in US-Pakistani relations, which have soured in recent months.

The officials also say that Pakistan has, for now, stopped demanding that the CIA suspends the covert drone strikes that have damaged al Qaida's militant ranks in Pakistan's tribal areas.

Only one of the arrested al Qaida figures is considered senior, but US and Pakistani officials call the combined moves a trend in the right direction.
Director of National Intelligence James Clapper said on Friday that the Pakistanis are "doing things to co-operate and be helpful".

Upper Dir—Hundreds of insurgents from Afghanistan’s side entered into Pakistan’s Barawal area of Upper Dir and attacked Kakar check-post manned by security forces on Sunday in which around 15 miscreants were killed while one security forces personnel also lost his life.

Official sources said that a group of armed miscreants attacked Kakar check-post situated in Barawal area of Upper Dir with automatic weapons, killing one soldier and injuring two others.

The attack was retaliated by the security forces immediately in which at least 15 insurgents were killed and the remaining were made to flee. The injured security forces personnel were shifted to hospital for treatment and were stated to be in stable condition.

Locals of Barawal said that the insurgents were armed with latest weapons and warned that militants would be given stern reply if they again tried to launch attack inside Pakistan’s territory. Locals also said that insurgents not only attacked the security forces but also targeted civilians of the area.

It is pertinent to mention here that in June, insurgents in cross-border attack killed at least 28 security forces personnel and 35 civilians in Nusrat Darra area of Barawal while last month insurgents attacked six security forces check-post in Chitral in which 25 security forces personnel and 20 militants were killed.

Pakistan has repeatedly asked Nato forces and Afghanistan government to stop cross-border incursions but they failed to stop cross border attacks which is causing uneasiness between the neighboring countries.—INP

30 Afghan militants killed after cross-border raid

CHITRAL: Pakistani soldiers killed 30 Afghan militants who had crossed the border to attack the army, military officials said on Monday.

The raid on Sunday night by a group of more than 200 Afghans could further damage an already difficult relationship between Afghanistan and Pakistan, who often accuse each other of failing to halt cross-border operations by militants.

One Pakistani soldier was killed and four were wounded in the latest frontier incident, which lasted close to an hour, officials said. There was no independent confirmation of the number of militants killed.

“The attack happened in the Barawal area of Upper Dir. Pakistani forces retaliated and the intruders slipped back,” said one of the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Tension between the countries has been high since Afghan officials accused the Inter-Services Intelligence agency (ISI) of masterminding the September 20 assassination of Kabul’s chief peace negotiator with the Taliban. Pakistan strongly denied the allegations.

Pakistan has repeatedly blamed Afghanistan for giving safe haven to militants on its side of the border, leaving Pakistan vulnerable to counter-attack when it chases them out of its own tribal areas in the northwest.

Afghan provincial officials say Pakistan’s military fired hundreds of rockets between September 21 and September 25 in eastern Kunar and Nuristan provinces, which share a long border with the tribal areas inside Pakistan.

Although, the shelling did not cause major casualties, it followed more than a month of bombardments by Pakistan’s military in June and July that Afghanistan said killed at least 42 people.

A Pakistan military official said the army only engaged militants who crossed the border to stage attacks.

At least three soldiers and 34 militants were killed on Thursday in a gunbattle in Khyber along Afghanistan.

The fighting erupted when Pakistan s paramilitary Frontier Corps (FC) launched a search operation in the Malik din Khel area of Khyber.

The strategically important Khyber district lies between Peshawar and Afghanistan and is the main route for NATO supplies in Afghanistan.

Mutahir Zeb, the top administrative official of Khyber, said militants from Lashkar-e-Islam (army of Islam) were involved.

"At least 34 militants and three soldiers were killed during an encounter," a paramilitary statement said.

"Security forces responded effectively and have cleared the area of militants," it said.
