Pakistan will not apologise to Bangladesh: Qureshi

United Nations (PTI): Pakistan on Friday rejected the suggestion that the country appologise to Bangladesh for the "atrocities" its forces committed in 1970s on the people of the then East Pakistan, saying the episode was now history.

Asked by a correspondent whether Islamabad would consider offering an appology for what its forces did before Bangladesh became independent, Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said while that was "part of history", the two countries shared good relations today.

Now Pakistan enjoys "excellent relations" with Bangladesh, he said, adding that a Bangladeshi delegation that had come to Islamabad had expressed sentiments "way different" to the sentiments of 1970s.

"We have a good working relationship. We are cooperating on number of bilateral forums. We see eye to eye on a number of issues. We have good bilateral understanding. We have desire to improve our people-to-people contacts," Qureshi added.

Bangladesh declared itself an independent country in 1971 following a movement against alleged attrocities by Pakistani forces, twenty five years after the partiton of the Indian subcontinent.

My mother's family used to live in East Pakistan and continued to live there for a short while even after it became bangladesh. although I don't come from a Bihari background, my mother always sympathizes with them.

No one mentions how Biharis were slaughtered first by Bengalis? Biharis were hunted down, women raped, children slaughtered. don't fall for this crap that they sympathized with the army, they were attacked before hand. this is exactly why the militia committed these acts, not that I justify them.

even aside from biharis, punjabis and everyone else all witnessed horrors from that ignorant population. anyone of lighter skin color whether they were from Uttar Pradesh, Hyderabad Deccan, or Punjab were all dumped into the "urdu-speaking" category.

Trust me, my family would know. My mother didn't leave her house for a while, Bengalis were kidnapping urdu-speaking girls and taking them away. Allah knows what they did with them.

My mother's baby sister died from disease because my grandfather couldn't leave the house at all for supplies or medical treatment. the Bengalis were looting and plundering homes and stores, stealing whatever they could get their dirty little hands on.

My family was lucky enough to get out of there untouched and unharmed, my grandfather sold his factory to a bengali family at the cost of his life. the family helped us escape, though it wasn't for free.

so like i said, don't fall for this BS. most of the Razakaars were bengali, they saw the chance to rape women and loot houses, they took it. you can read articles today about bengalis claiming that the war criminals still haven't been punished, actually they're ruling that country today. why should we apologize? the real victims here are the biharis, you can tell just by looking at their condition.

Thus the reason that an official apology is not likely to happen. Both sides can dig up old gripes. I think its good that both countries are no longer lingering upon issues of the old. Forgiving each other and moving on would be the way forward.

The above mentioned notion was reverse, so far I know. Well as others said that the relationship with BD-PAK are in good shape, this type of words should not used without knowing everything well. I suggest u to know everything well first and dont be with pre-determined ideas in mind. I think if the relationship be sahped well then its not belittle Pak in apology.

While I think you bring up an important point, that atrocities were committed by both sides, I think it is wrong to paint all Bangladeshis or even all the Bengalis in East Pakistan at that time with the same brush.

There were villains on both sides, and I think Musharraf's regrets on his visit to Bangladesh should be enough for this issue to be over.

I'm not so sure Pakistan has ever apologized to Bangladesh over any so called atrocity or genocide or whatever. The term used is "regretted the excesses committed". Whilst I agree with this, Pakistan shouldn't apologize for anything more, since it's an acknowledgement by Pakistan that its forces had committed something more serious (which they did not). It is Bangladesh's turn now to apologize for the excesses committed by the Muktihi Bahini.

The thing that is wrong, is that the Bangladeshis portray (or try to portray) themselves as innocent victims in all this....when they were far from being innocent victims. They also manipulate the events of 1971 to denigrate Pakistan's reputation further.

ethnic/racial tensions existed in East Pakistan before all of this happened, the Awami League Rebellion and language movement sparked this stuff all off. I'm glad that the monster known as Mujib was killed only a short while after his nation was born.

There is no need to pick pieces of past and mud sling them, we made the Hamdoodur Rehman commission which political forces of both sides accepted.
ZAB condoned Bangladesh's pain in 1973 we speak no more about the past and its pain but respect it as it is history.
