There had been reports of firing and shelling in Mankote sub-sector of Poonch too.

Pakistan on Wednesday resorted to firing and shelling on forward posts and civilian areas along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district, prompting the Indian Army to give a befitting response.

“Pakistan Army initiated unprovoked and indiscriminate firing of small arms, automatics and mortars from 0534 hours today in Poonch sector along the Line of Control,” a defence spokesman said.

“Indian Army is retaliating strongly and effectively,” he added.

There had been reports of firing and shelling in Mankote sub-sector of Poonch too.

It may be recalled that Pakistan violated ceasefire 4 times on August 13 by resorting to firing and shelling in Krishnagati, Nowshera, Mankote and north Kashmir, resulting in injuries to three jawans.

On July 12, Pakistan troops had heavily fired on forward posts and civilian areas in Krishnagati and Poonch sectors in which a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) and a woman were killed.

Pakistan Army’s shells exploded near a house killing 40-year-old Raqia Bi of Gohlad Kalran on August 12. Naib Subedar Jagram Singh Tomar was also killed in Pakistan firing in Krishnagati sector on August 12.

On August 8, Pakistan troops resorted to firing and shelling in Krishnagati sector of Poonch district, in which Sepoy Pawan Singh Sugra was grievously injured and later succumbed to his injuries.

On August 7, an Army jawan was injured in a ceasefire violation by Pakistani troops along the LoC in the Uri sector of Baramulla district.

On August 6, the Pakistani troops violated the ceasefire by firing at Indian posts along the LoC in Baba Khori area of Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir.

Prior to that, on July 30, Pakistani forces had resorted to firing from light weapons and medium machine guns in the Baba Khori belt of Naushera sector.

Increase in ceasefire violations
2017 has also seen a sharp increase in ceasefire violations at the LoC by Pakistan.

Till August 1, there had been 285 such violations by the Pakistan Army, while in 2016, the number was significantly less at 228 for the entire year, the figures said, adding that last year, eight Army personnel were killed in ceasefire violations.

Eleven people, including nine soldiers, were killed and 18 others were injured in ceasefire violations by Pakistan Army in the month of July.

There were 83 ceasefire violations, one BAT attack and two infiltration bids from the Pakistani side in June in which 4 people, including 3 jawans, were killed and 12 others were injured.

In May, there were 79 ceasefire violations, according to officials.

Two security personnel were killed while four others were injured as a group of fidayeen (suicide) militants in a pre-dawn attack stormed a police building in south Kashmir's Pulwama district on Saturday.

Sources said two to three heavily armed militants, believed to be fidayeen, stormed District Police Lines (DPL) Pulwama at around 4:15 am and opened a heavy volume of fire resulting in injuries to the six security personnel.

“Intermittent firing is still going on. Two fidayeen are believed to be inside the DPL. The area has been cordoned off. Choppers are hovering around the area to locate the militants and the high alert has been issued in south Kashmir,” they said.

The injured security personnel were shifted to hospital where a policeman and a CRPF personnel succumbed. Officials said the camp was targeted to inflict high casualties on forces as hundreds of Jammu and Kashmir Police and CRPF personnel are stationed inside the DPL.

The camp, that has been attacked, is situated in a high-security area and close to Deputy Commissioner and SSP office on Shopian-Pulwama highway. Initial reports suggest, that fidayeen were firing from a three-storey police building where several policemen are trapped. However, officials said there is no hostage-like situation.

Inspector General Police (IGP) Kashmir Muneer Khan said the operation was going on. "We are evacuating people. Both CRPF and Jammu & Kashmir (personnel) are stationed in police lines," he told reporters.

Authorities suspended Internet services in Pulwama district as a “precautionary measure” to prevent law and order situation following the attack.

Security forces gunned down the three militants who stormed a police complex in south Kashmir’s Pulwama, a senior police official announced on Sunday, a day after the attack that killed eight jawans.

“All three terrorists involved in the police lines #Pulwama attack have been eliminated. Salute to the sacrifices of our brave hearts,” tweeted deputy inspector general of police, south Kashmir, SP Pani.

The ambush began before dawn on Saturday when the militants stormed the police complex that also houses residential buildings, leading to a siege that went on for the entire day.

Four policemen and an equal number of CRPF personnel were killed in the attack.

Jaish-e-Mohammad has claimed responsibility, though police is yet to identify the militants involved.

A wreath laying ceremony for two of the CRPF men — Constable Borase Dinesh Dipak from Gujarat and Constable Mohammad Yasin Teli from Baramulla district in north Kashmir — was held in the morning on Sunday at regional training centre, Humhama, Srinagar.

Tributes were paid to the other two CRPF constables, Ravindra Baban Dhanawade of Maharashtra and constable Jaswant Singh of Haryana, on Saturday evening.

The J&K policemen killed in the shootout were Imtiyaz Ahmad, Mohammad Yousuf Hajam, Rafiq Ahmad Hajam and Amarjeet Singh. Their wreath-laying ceremony was held in district police lines Awantipora on Saturday.

In a tweet, Army’s Chinar Corps commander and all ranks saluted the “martyred CRPF & JKP personnel & offers heartfelt condolences to the families.”

Chief minister Mehbooba Mufti condemned the killings and conveyed her sympathies to the bereaved families.

“Violence of last three decades or more has taken a heavy toll on the people of the State in terms of death and destruction, tearing apart of the social fabric, inflicting massive economic, academic and other losses besides the irreparable loss of human lives,” she said in a statement.

Opposition National Conference expressed sadness and rued the futility of violence.

“Thoughts & prayers with families of those who have lost their lives in DPL Pulwama attack. Nothing good has or will come from violence. Sad,” tweeted Junaid Azim Matoo, NC spokesman.

Pakistani police say Indian troops have fired across the Line of Control in the disputed Kashmir region, killing three civilians.

Police official Ashfaq Hussain said Monday that shelling by Indian troops overnight hit a house in the Fatehpur area in Haveli district in Pakistan-controlled part of Kashmir, causing the casualties.

Hussain says the shelling also wounded two other people who were inside the house.

He says Pakistani forces returned the fire.

Muhammad Shabbir, a resident in the Chakoti area, says both sides exchanged fire.

The two sides frequently trade fire across the heavily militarized Line of Control and blame each other for violating a 2003 cease-fire agreement. Kashmir is split between nuclear-armed rivals India and Pakistan. Both claim it in its entirety and have fought two wars over Kashmir.

On August 27, five persons were injured when Pakistani troops opened firing in Shahpur sector of Poonch district.
Pakistani troops on Wednesday targeted forward posts and villages in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said.

On August 27, five persons were injured when Pakistani troops opened firing in Shahpur sector of Poonch district.

Till August 1, there have been 285 such violations by the Pakistan Army while in 2016, the number was significantly less at 228 for the entire year, according to Army figures.
