KARACHI: The toll of victims reached 14 after three more people died after consuming poisonous liquor in Chanesar Goth near Kala Pul on Wednesday, Geo News reported Thursday.

According to police, six friends had died in the same area after consuming illicit liquor on Tuesday while more than a dozen fell unconscious who were treated in different hospitals.

Those who died include Saeed, Abdul Qadir, Babu, Mohammad Mansha, Mohammad Zubair, Shan, Mohammad Shafiq, Shahrukh, Saman Masih, Umair, Mohammad Aslam, Babu Khairi, Razzak Lasi and Aslam Siddiqui.

The victims were the residents of Liaqat Ashraf Colony and Hindupara area of Mehmoodabad.

Relatives of the victims were forbidden to give statements to the media.

After the incident, Sindh Home Minister Mazoor Wasan ordered the police to present report within 24 hours.

The newspaper story adds:
The police high-ups had suspended the station house officer (SHO) for his failure to stop illegal sale and consumption of wine. The number of such deaths has risen to 14 in just three days, stirring protests in the area where protesters urged steps to stop illegal sale of toxic liquor.

After the news of their death spread, people of Chanesar Goth took to the streets and demanded the arrest of the people involved in the business of fatal liquor. The protesters blocked the main road for several hours.

Later in the night, the Tipu Sultan police and personnel of the Sindh Rangers raided an illlegal liquor factory and arrested Muhammad Gul, Shahzad and Irshad. However, the owners of the factory — Irfan and Badshah — managed to flee.

They also seized four cans of illicit liquor, one thousand bottles and punch machines from the factory. On Tuesday, at least seven people died while one lost his eyesight after consuming poisonous liquor in Chanesar Goth.

The tragedy has raised questions over the role of the police in checking widespread bootlegging and illegal consumption of liquor right under their nose. In a similar incident in 2007, 18 people had died in different parts of the city after consuming poisonous liquor. Three more fall prey to toxic liquor - GEO.tv

But these were made by illegal breweries. Legal ones wont have these problems(hopefully)

exactly! there's a reason why they called "illegal breweries" where there is no quality control, no health or hygiene standards, and the materials and type of process they use are unsafe for humans


there is not a single example in the world where prohibition actually worked....it would be a challenge for someone to find a case where it did work.

Just the other day, 3 people died because of drinking poisoned booze, so , even if it is banned, still, people do it. There are a host of other things banned as well!!!, but people still do it. Go to a traffic signal in a posh area of Islamabad or Lahore, and you will see escorts there, and entertaining offers.

BTW, Bigg Apple from the Murree Brewery tastes awesome, it is an apple juice, with some CO2, not alcohol.

yes but that poisoned booze was not from a proper brewery type establishment....

it was an illegal distillery operation --these guys set up chemistry-set looking thing in their homes and produce very inferior stuff


it makes people go blind, it makes them sick as dogs and can kill them.....that's why it's better if people have to drink, they drink something that wont be toxic and kill them.......though yes, alcohol is not good for the body. But same with a lot of other things.

in this case, i think even conservatives should realize that exporting it makes sense; it's just business. If people enjoy the products, then its good for Pakistan's name. Even look at Egypt and Syria -- those countries are making their own stuff and selling it to other countries. Doesnt mean that their population is alcohol addicted or having major problems with alcohol addictions

Well one cant be sure- it is better to avoid it- try "Moussy"- i dont know if its available there in Pakistan-
