Pakistan to partially rescind capital punishment

June 20, 2019

KARACHI:

Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi on Thursday said Pakistan was going to revoke the capital punishment for the accused to be extradited from other countries.

“We are amending the penal code of Pakistan to revoke the capital punishment for the accused to be brought back to the country under extradition treaties with other countries”, Qureshi told reporters in the capital Islamabad.

The development came a day after British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt during a joint press conference with his Pakistani counterpart in London declared that the UK would not sign “politically-motivated” extradition treaties with any country.

Qureshi had assured Hunt that his country would not “misuse” any such agreement, if signed.

Islamabad is seeking extradition of several Pakistani nationals, including the founder of Karachi-based ethnic political group Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and a former finance minister, Ishaq Dar on different charges, including murder and money laundering.

Pakistan lifted a de-facto ban on capital punishment in December 2014 following a gruesome militant attack on an army-run school in Peshawar, which killed over 140 people, mostly students.

Since then, over 300 convicts, mostly militants, have been sent to gallows. Currently, there are around 8,000 death row prisoners in Pakistani jails.

Qureshi also told reporters that Afghan President Ashraf Ghani would visit Pakistan on June 27 on the invitation of Premier Imran Khan to hold talks on different issues, including the ongoing peace process in the war-racked country.

Diplomatic ties between the two neighbours remained frosty in recent years with both accusing each other of patronizing and using militants against each other.

There's no way they are sending him back, confiscate all his lands in Pakistan and start giving asylum to any catalan, Irish britanny basque sardianian Corsican independence fighter as Pakistan will should not extradite 'politically motivated ' extraditions

The brits are very cunning people. They have huge businesses with india. No way they will prefer Pakistan over India. They will always shelter elements that they can use or create leverages with.

Our foreign ministry should instead focus on countries with independent foreign policies and less business links with india.

Are we going to revoke the death penalty for just people who are extradited back or for all crimes?

Such independence movements rarely succeed.

Besides, every nation state has its red lines. It is best to work within those limitations so we can address valid human right concerns. Suspending/revoking capital punishment for those extradited under the treaty is a fair trade off if it leads to a mutual extradition treaty between UK and Pakistan.

Are we going to revoke the death penalty for just people who are extradited back or for all crimes?

We are considering an amendment in the PPC (Pakistan Penal Code) according to which capital punishment will not be applicable on the suspects given under extradition --Shah Mehmood Qureshi

Now they have no excuse but to send them back.

However, I believe if they don’t respect our sovereignty, it may be time to scale back ties and pressure the UK on theft of relics and also for reparations for British occupation.

How UK will return the billion of pounds looted from Pakistan UK is a safe haven for money laundering

this amendment in penal code of Pakistan only for criminals those will be brought back from other countries or extradited.
It will not be implemented on All criminals such as murderer, terrorists.

I usually argue that white collar criminals are real reason of inflation & because of them poverty is increased and because of poverty society gradually die & few even attempted the suicide, indirectly white collar criminals are the real murderer of human being. So Why the so called champion of human rights & UN discourage capital punishment for white collar criminals.

It is shocking no one has the logical answer to counter this argument.

Just give refuge to Julian Assange and see them squirm

Pakistan is yet to take independence from its colonial subjugation.

Mr. Qureshi's ancestor were greatly rewarded by the Brits as well. He owes them this favor in bringing all criminals to Pakistan
