Ghulām Khān is a border town between Pakistan and Afghanistan.
One part of the town sits in North Waziristan, Pakistan, and the other half in Khost Province of Afghanistan. It is the third busiest border crossing between the two countries, after Torkham and Chaman.
The people in the area are all ethnic Pashtuns of the same sub-tribes or clans.

Pakistan opens third Afghan border terminal

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has decided to open the third border terminal at Ghulam Khan with effect from June 22 (today), for bilateral trade between Pakistan and Afghanistan and to allow transit trade and import from Afghanistan through Torkham and Chaman border terminals as well.

Earlier, Pakistan had opened its two border terminals at Torkham and Chaman for transit trade and exports to Afghanistan.

According to the press release of Foreign Office spokesperson on Saturday, the decision was taken, keeping in view both countries’s desire to further increase mutual trade, strong fraternal ties and renewed Afghan government''s request.

"This arrangement on trade will be in operation 6 days a week.

Saturdays will be reserved for pedestrian movement on these border crossing terminals.

These steps are being taken after implementing all necessary protocols related to COVID-19 pandemic "according to press release.

The opening of Ghulam Khan border crossing terminal and allowing imports from Afghanistan reflects Pakistan’s resolve to help Afghanistan and facilitate its trade.

The United States has welcomed Pakistan's decision to reopen the Ghulam Khan border crossing with Afghanistan, a few months after its closure due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"Encouraged that Afghanistan and Pakistan have agreed to open a 3rd border crossing at Ghulam Khan to facilitate trade between the two countries and help businesses/exporters get back on their feet," tweeted the US State Department's Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs in the early hours of Wednesday.

The state department bureau stated that the increased, uninterrupted trade and connectivity between Pakistan and Afghanistan would bring benefits to both economies.

Last week, authorities announced the reopening of the Ghulam Khan border crossing in North Waziristan for trade activities, which was closed in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic on March 25.

“The decision to reopen the Ghulam Khan border on June 22 was taken at a meeting of civil and military officials of Pakistan and Afghanistan,” an official said.

The official said the trade activities would be carried out under the standard operating procedures (SOPs).

“The vehicle will be disinfected and the coronavirus test of the drivers and other relevant people conducted at the quarantine centre established near the border,” he added.

The border was opened for trade activities on March 7. However, the crossing was closed down in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic to check the spread of the virus.

Coincidently - how is India's air corridor going with Afghanistan? Or sea route via Chabahar?

Genuine question.

Great for Pakistan. Goodwill from Afghans will be very beneficial for our country.

We tamed afghans via strict border controls and fencing so they have no other choice in the matter. As far as trust goes with Afghans they are bunch of snakes who serve the highest bidder. Lets not forget their Namak Haram Nature just bcz we allowed them access for trade via our border. One one hand we should offer them trade on the other we should have a loaded gun to teach them a lesson if they ever get out of line.

Just annex the wakhan corridor or buy it from them. Pakisan shouldn't depend on hostile or failed states especially afghanistan.

Failed as Afghans have rejected them.

You are confusing the Afghan government with the people of Afghanistan. Next government incoming will have excellent relations with Pakistan because they represent the rural Afghan Pukhtoon majority, not just Kabul.

Just annex the wakhan corridor or buy it from them. Pakisan shouldn't depend on hostile or failed states especially afghanistan.

Why create a state of war with an ally, when you have open belligerent enemy India to the East, a sneaky duplicitous enemy to your West, and a myriad of internal enemies and agents?

The only way I see Wakhan coming under Pakistan is if we merge with Afghanistan outright. It would also eliminate our precarious security paradigm and dissuade a future foreign occupations.

Something to think about in the coming years when Taliban government comes into power.
