Pakistan urges India to cool rhetoric over Kashmir

NEW DELHI: Pakistan urged India on Thursday to tone down the “Pakistan bashing” over a spate of military clashes in Kashmir between the nuclear-armed neighbours, and again offered foreign minister-level talks to try to cool tensions.

“I think it is important not to let this cycle escalate into something which becomes even more ugly than it is today,” Pakistani High Commissioner to India Salman Bashir said in an interview with Reuters. “Let’s try to see if we can cool down and resume normal business.”

Three Pakistani and two Indian soldiers have been killed this month in the worst outbreak of tit-for-tat violence in Kashmir since India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire along a de facto border there nearly a decade ago.

India and Pakistan have fought three wars since partition in 1947, two of them over the Himalayan region that both claim.

Following public and media outrage after India said one of its soldiers had been decapitated, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said there could be “no business as usual” with Pakistan, and the army chief said his commanders should retaliate if provoked.

Bashir said India could have worked with Pakistan to get to the bottom of what happened instead of “stirring raw emotions and upping the rhetoric”, adding that “Pakistan bashing has become fashionable” in India.

He told Reuters that the killing of the soldiers on the Indian side of the Line of Control (LoC) dividing Kashmir was not carried out by Pakistani troops.

“Such heinous acts … are of course condemnable irrespective of where they happen and when they happen. But to say that these were done by Pakistan, that the Pakistan army was responsible, is something that we cannot agree to,” he said.

MASS PROTEST

India blames the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militant group for that attack and says it enjoys official protection in Pakistan.

Pakistan denies supporting the group. Indian officials have accused the LeT of stirring up the recent trouble on the border, a claim denied by its founder, Hafez Saeed.

Bashir said the Pakistani army and government could not speculate on who might have been behind the attack.

Pakistan’s government was plunged into a crisis this week by a Muslim cleric who led a mass protest in Islamabad to demand it resign. Bashir ruled out any link between the internal strife and the military skirmishes on the Kashmir border.

He pointed to an offer made on Wednesday by Pakistani Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar to her Indian counterpart for talks to ratchet down the tension.

“Pakistan definitely desires de-escalation and definitely feels that the only way forward is through dialogue,” he said.

Indian-Pakistani relations had improved after plummeting in 2008 when gunmen killed 166 people in Mumbai in a three-day rampage that India blamed on LeT.

However, firing and small skirmishes are common along the internationally recognised 740-km (460-mile) LoC despite the ceasefire that was agreed in 2003.

Government officials on both sides have insisted over the past two days that the latest flare-up will not derail talks to improve relations, and experts say an escalation is unlikely.

yeah but our foreign minister lacks the "muscle" that would have been needed otherwise

not to sound sexist or anything but she is not fit for the role.....should have put her in Planning Commission/Min. Finance or something --a field in which she is qualified.

as for Mr. Bashir -- again - he lacks the backbone. Always smiling and shaking hands, and he could probably do those things even a day after hostile forces killed a 3rd jawan.

it sickens me to the stomach

it's about projecting our side of the story too and about condemning what needs condemnation

yes theyre soldiers and they can expect death at any time -- but they are still humans and that last soldier (like all others) had a family. 3 daughters and a wife incidentally.

maybe i'm the only one who is still out-raged by it, but i do think that these ministers just dont think things through

i'm not suggesting to saber-rattle and go order war on india over incident like this.....but our response hasn't exactly been as assertive as i would have liked

The Hypocrisy of Pakistan is evident in all the cases. When LeT and JUD is Banned by US and Pakistan in year 2003 then why Hafiz Saeed is presented in court and then get bail. Why Javed Miandad extends his relation with Dawood Ibrahim, most wanted terrorist and Finally OBL was denied for not being in Pakistan was killed near army base. And you talk to us of being liars! huh!

That's rich coming from you folk.

When LeT and JUD is Banned by US and Pakistan in year 2003 then why Hafiz Saeed is presented in court and then get bail. Why Javed Miandad extends his relation with Dawood Ibrahim, most wanted terrorist

Never was the necessary evidence provided, why should we act unless we have reason to do so.
Besides, India has long supported militancy in Pakistan. Talk about hypocrisy?

Finally OBL was denied for not being in Pakistan was killed near army base. And you talk to us of being liars! huh!
For most Indians including you, when it comes to WoT, it's best to keep your mouth shut.
Not only because you don't know the details, the background but you also lack the understanding.

OBL was killed somewhere in Abottabad in Bilal town. Quite some distance from PMA, he wasn't camped outside it in a tent.
Besides, we've pulled our own weight and that of a superpower in this war. We've captured and killed many Al Qaeda.

The OBL incident and the way the Americans portrayed it was pure political posturing, instead of letting people ask why it took so long, Obama was quick to use it as a trophy, also in this case he found a scapegoat. He finds a washed up poster child in Pakistan and blames Pakistan, how soon they forget other Al Qaeda we've dealt with.

So please, cut the crap.

The Problem is, Pakistan is going through a Political Unrest and is unable to take decisions so it is like. Let's cool down today, and warm up tomorrow when the fire broken by Dr Qadri settles down. India knows this tactic very well.

Simple reason. Karachi, Quetta, Drone Strikes, TTP situation is worsening. Adding India would mean pressure in the Eastern front. A stable Pakistan is NOT in India's interests.

Well.... What a joke and wild imagination................. ( I wont mind if you meant MMS with that comment..... as he is the guy who invested too much in to pakistan .... and he will sweating if something goes wrong as he has gone against the wish of most of the people and he will be a laughing stock if things get worse)..... Otherwise its a wild dream of a dear friend of mine from pakistan :)

Even during 2002 GOI was sweating after threatening Pakistan when Pakistn said we will launch missile at you.

So India stopped talk of precision strikes, and Pakistan stopped talking about missile

=Both happy

You keep believing in india sponsoring your terrorists..... Let me tell you india is not capable of doing something that sort... and india lack experience and exposure on terrorism...... Certainly that could be one aspect where in Pakistan can defeat india ...

Wrt OBL.... After reading your post my take is..... The entire world is wrong...... Pakistan cant support terrorism... and Pakistan has nothing to do with OBL..... Have you ever thought why people blame pakistan for anything related to terrorism?????

Lol..... What you think when india moved the troops india was not aware that pakistan has missiles.... and india assumed that paksitan will not fire missiles if attacked......... And they only realised when pakistan told india?????????????? The generals were sweating... not because of missiles.... the objective of that military build up was lost due to the time taken to mobilise the troops.... Which you also knows....... But just check up with some of your leaders they still have dried up sweat........ The last may be the supposed to call from Pranab Da...... But imagining sweating listening to hina is the wildest imagination you can have as of now...... But then i expect some more wild imagination from you......

PS : I am extremely happy the tension is coming down and things are cooling down....

pakistan is already going through a lot. add india to it. it becomes worse.

While I whole heatedly agree with you that Let and JUD have created their share of pain for the Indian gov't, it won't be fair to say the 'hypocrisy of Pakistan'. You have a terrorism problem internally with Hindu fundamentalists. If you take a count of Christians and Muslims that have been barbarically killed by the Hindu terrorist....the count is more than what Let or JUD did to you guys. So 'the hypocrisy' exist everywhere.....it seems as if you belong to Let and kill someone, you're a brand name terrorist. But if you belong to one of those Hindu terrorist organizations.....you can kill Christians and Muslims at will and you'll never be called a terrorist!!!??? I'd like to see India and Indians calling out the Hindu terrorist organizations as equally as they call out LeT and JUD. After all....they are all doing terrorism!
