Pakistan to become 4th largest nation by population in 2050

it seems someone came with a projection without any grounds to it and this piece got picked up by rest of the media in pakistan, there is no basis to this figure, no details of the study revealed and how was it carried out and as such the estimates of population in pakistan are not based on any census which then can be used as a counter check to all the estimates that keep getting made.

people keep suggesting pakistan's population is 170m, someone will put it as 180m, there is absolutely no clarity and the instant thought when someone points the figure at 180m is, what is the per capita income in pakistan, does someone even know for a fact what that would be, or is that also based on some "educated guess work" as has happened in this particular article.

anyways a more reliable source goldman sachs in its much discussed and debated report on BRIC, G-7, and N-11 puts pakistan's population as 295m by 2050 which then would still be the 6th largest, much like today. the countries leading the pack would be india, china (provided they continue with one child policy), US, nigeria, and indonesia. i know few will be surprised to see nigeria there but then this was a report which had a lot of in-depth study going into it unlike an estimate made in the article with which this thread was started.

Just look at different roles of the clergy. In Pakistan the clergy is the ummah ki kasrat crowd, family planning is haram crowd. In Iran, the Ayatollah promotes family planning.

Take a look at the Bangladeshi and Irani miracle:-

As I've stated numerous times, Pakistan is losing the battle against population control. The decrease hasn't been as dramatic compared to the world and especially developing countries. The most amazing thing is that fertility rate rose from 3.9 to 4.1 between PDHS 2003-04 and PDHS 06-07.

Leaving war torn Afghanistan aside, let me compare us with other SAARC members and some other countries as well. When I say neighbouring countries, I am excluding Afghanistan. The indicators for us are not bright in any case.

Take population growth for instance. We’re pushing our total population to around 180 million now. Our stats say this country might explode with 350 million people within the next three decades. Yes, twice the number of people within the same land (in case your delusions of a Greater Pakistan do not come true). Our population growth rate stands at 2.14% per annum. And we can be sure that this is a cooked up number, fudged to make it look smaller than it actually is. Even then, Pakistan has the highest population growth rate amongst the neighbouring countries. We have failed to create a successful population control and family planning policy. The local mullah goes around saying that this is a “western conspiracy” to reduce the “size of the ummah” as if the size matters when it comes to conquering. Maldives, where you have to be a Muslim to be a citizen has a population growth rate of 1.42%, Bangladesh’s is 1.41% and the number stands a paltry 1.31% in the Islamic Republic of Iran. In Pakistan, Iodine deficiency is on the rise since the use of iodized salt has decreased thanks to government ineptitude and the local mullah’s sermon that iodized salt makes men sterile, yet another “western conspiracy”. Add to this the mullah’s sermon over the Polio Immunization and we’re one of the only four countries where Polio is endemic. We were the last ones when it came to smallpox as well.

Let’s take a look at the state of child health in our country. Infant mortality stands at 78 deaths per 1,000 briths. That means 1 out of every 14 infants dies before his first birthday. The under-five mortality rise is 94 deaths per 1,000 births. That means 1 out of every 10 children born die before their fifth birthday. This has not improved by any significant statistical value over the years. All SAARC members have the figures far, far better than ours. You say you’re better off than Bhutan? Their numbers are 45 and 65. In 1973, Infant Mortality stood at 155 in Pakistan and 144 in Maldives. Today it is 78 in Pakistan and 24 in Maldvies. The world average was 89 then and is 46 now. Meanwhile, we tested another bunch of long range ballistic missiles and cruise missiles. Hail the mighty bomb !

Let’s take a look at fertility rate in the country. It stands at a mind boggling 4.1 children per women. Yet again the highest amongst countries in the region, in fact the nearest one is Nepal with 2.9 children per women. When did this number rise? It has been this worse since time immemorial. Bangladesh meanwhile seems to have understood the importance and in 1968 both had the same fertility rate of 6.88. Today it stands at 2.34, yeah women in Bangladesh today will have one third the number of children their mothers had. In our case, fertility has infact started to rise again from 3.9 to 4.1 between the PDHS 03-04 and PDHS 06-07. How’s that for the “ummah ki kasrat” crowd?

38% of children do not go to school and 2 million children between the ages of 5 and 9 work as child labourers, many in bonded labour. That includes the children who work in the homes of the upwardly mobile urban upper middle class members of this forum.

We're facing a crisis of population growth. It should have decreased to a growth rate of 1% by now, but it's way bigger. Fertility should have been 2.5 by now. It's above 4. These are worrying numbers. Especially keeping in mind the fact that productivity hasn't increased, especially agricultural productivity which has remained almost constant since the "green revolution".

Our population pyramid is like a triangle now. The demographic momentum has perhaps reached its peak and the country will explode with people unless and until stringent measures are taken. I find it highly offensive when a couple of my friends start complaining that television ads for Saathi and family planning should be stopped, for them the "family key saath bura lagta hai" factor is more important than the fact that we won't be able to feed well or sustain welfare for the universe of people that will occupy this country soon.

The MPA in KP Assembly was right. It's time to tax >2 children in the urban areas (as children have an economic value in rural areas).

Note : Bangladesh also used brutal forced sterilization in the early '80s which nobody should do.

Try to at least check official sources before posting a post as big as this.

Population clock from reads Population Census Organization, Federal Bureau of Statistics reads : 169886000 as of June 30, 2010.

http://www.statpak.gov.pk/depts/pco/index.html

This is based on 1998 census and growth rates of PDHS 2003-04

1698.88m as you can see above. 180m is suggested as we never included Afghans in the last census (whose population grows like not to be insulting but like rabbits). Also states always downplay population figures so as to compensate for welfare distributions for which they know they would not be able to keep up with.

We need 1 child policy for 10 years, and 2 child policty between 10th and 15th years

The peopel who state we need to have 10 kids in families well thy should pay more taxes , 20-30% more unless their first child had some issues (health) noone should be allowed to have more then 1 kid

75 million is what our population should be max

naa, what we can do is......... "Bachay do hi achay" and you pay additional fine for having third child.

Nothing else for now :)

Authorities have to act and educate people. More people needs more food, more care, more resources and result in more problems.

Due to global warming, water shortage and other reasons the food production will be affected big time.

The demand for energy and their cost will also increase.

And more poor or uneducated people will only be good for radicals/taliban they will exploit them.

.
In my office there are 8 Indians and 2 Pakistanis, average age same, Indians put together have 2 Kids and one on the way, Pakistanis put together have 6 and one on the way.

Surprisingly the Pakistanis are on an average better educated and earning more money than the Indians :)

Not relevant in the larger statistical analyses as the sample size is tiny, but the part where even the highly educated ones (one being a woman!) will have (atleast) 3.5 kids per family is surprising compared to the educated Indians I know. No offence, just an observation.

Thanks for bringing Taliban into this discussion too.....You didn't mention 10th failed state, ISI taliban connections, LeT and Jud this time?

Have a look at this
The Breathing Earth simulation
Welcome to Breathing Earth. This real-time simulation displays the CO2 emissions of every country in the world, as well as their birth and death rates.
Please remember that this real time simulation is just that: a simulation. Although the CO2 emission, birth rate and death rate data used in Breathing Earth comes from reputable sources, data that measures things on such a massive scale can never be 100% accurate. Please note however that the CO2 emission levels shown here are much more likely to be too low than they are to be too high.

south asia is gonna be crowded as hell in 2050 need more room maybe south asian people should start moving out and colonizing .I think australia looks tempting relatively close to the sub-continent and also plenty of space over there and low population hehe.......

as per UN study published few days back; we will be outta water by 2050,
Hatha Hola Rakho... :)

.
To the whole Pakistani nation

Shabash lagai raho. :D

whats in it to get happy about
Pakistan have a substantial population right now and they should put effort to maintain it...not explode it

look at India we r facing a big problem due to our growth in population....we r also trying to control it

meanwhile china had substantially controlled it,i read in a report due to their control policies they had reduced a population of around 160 million...thats almost equal to the population of pakistan
