Lahore Qalandars will be chasing a target of 146 after Islamabad United's mostly shaky innings came to an end. United struggled for the majority of the match but made a comeback after being at a score of 86 for 6 in the 14th fixture of the Pakistan Super League.

Umar Akmal stood his ground on the crease making 32, but was disappointed by other batsmen who joined him. With the run-rate increasing with every over, Qalandars were looking to steady the innings and keep the scoreboard ticking.

Qalandars lost their openers early on against disciplined bowling by Islamabad United while chasing the target of 146.

Both openers, including skipper McCullum, were dismissed after playing false shots.

PSL final in Lahore

* Najam Sethi invites Prime Minister, Chief Ministers and Chief of Army Staff to attend finale at Gaddafi Stadium

psl-final-in-lahore-2db240dbb5f12c44e5e71be33280ce38.jpg

LAHORE: The Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2017 final will be held in Lahore. The decision was taken after a meeting held in Dubai on Monday between the PSL management, headed by Najam Sethi, and the owners of the five franchises. “There was a meeting held between the PSL management and franchise owners. Among various administrative and event discussions, all the team owners took time to reinforce their solidarity and conviction with the decision of taking the final of the PSL back to its rightful home - the Gaddafi Stadium Lahore,” said a spokesman for the PCB. Though the PSL has maintained from before the start of this season that the final would be held in Lahore, but that status has been shaken up by a series of bombings in Pakistan over the last week. Most pertinent for the venue was a bombing on a major thoroughfare in Lahore last week, near the Punjab Assembly, which claimed the lives of 13 people. But the entire length and breadth of the country has been rocked by a wave of bombings in the last week, including one at a shrine in Sindh which killed more than 80 people. “It has been heart-warming to see the dedication of all the owners to the cause of taking cricket back home and there is a realisation that this final will be the first step in opening the gates to international teams starting to make the journey again. We are all committed to this mission and wish to have a thoroughly entertaining final where it should happen - in Lahore,” added the spokesman.

Earlier, due to security concerns following the wave terrorist activities there had been speculation that the PSL final may not be held in Pakistan after all. Nonetheless, PSL chairman Sethi had promised cricket fans that the final would still be held in Lahore, in the absence of foreign players, if the fans did not want the venue to change following last week’s bombings. But support and assurances from the federal government, from the Punjab government and perhaps most importantly from the Pakistan Army, have meant that the PSL felt confident enough to pursue Lahore. A statement from the Army shortly after the Lahore blast said that the “Army will extend full support to all concerned for holding the event as scheduled.” During the meeting on Monday, the owners of the Karachi Kings and Lahore Qalandars franchises raised concerns about the security of players and the general public if the match were to be played in Lahore, concerns that were eventually assuaged by Sethi. In a tweet following the meeting, Sethi said: “PSL management and franchises resolve to hold final in Lahore. We invite PM, COAS and CMs to attend the match at Gadaffi Stadium.”

The PCB has taken numerous steps in its planning for the final. The PCB has bought four bulletproof buses for the transport of players, and has previously spoken about planning it such that players fly in and then out immediately either side of the match. The question around the participation of foreign players in the final remains unanswered. Even before this latest wave of attacks, the Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations (FICA) issued a report warning that an “acceptable level of participant security and safety cannot be expected or guaranteed” in Pakistan. After the Lahore blast, Sethi briefed foreign players in Dubai but admitted that he was unsure how many would agree to traveling. It is believed that foreign players will be offered separate payments to travel for the final itself, based on a slab system reflecting their status and seniority. The maximum such payment could go as high as $50,000. Franchises have, however, been handed a list of 54 foreign players who, the PCB says, are willing to travel to Lahore for the final. The list comprises players who were left unpicked at the draft, as well as others from outside the pool who have been contacted by the PCB about their availability. They include players from Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, England, South Africa, West Indies and Bangladesh.

PSL Final: What was more important, the game or where it is held?

46402-psl-1487579282-571-640x480.jpg

It is not a matter of whether it should be held in Karachi, Islamabad or Lahore because the entire country has been jolted by these bomb blasts and every city, for the time being, is equally vulnerable.

When Najam Sethi initially announced the Pakistan Cricket Board’s intentions to host the final of the second Pakistan Super League (PSL), it received critical acclaim. Everybody, fans and the administration, realised the need to eventually bring the league back home, but nothing has ever come easily to Pakistan and, similarly, the idea, though appealing seems difficult to execute.

Many things have changed since the intentions were first disclosed including an alarming shift in Pakistan’s security situation resulting from series of unpleasant acts of terrorism. Most recently, it was confirmed that the final would still be held in Lahore, with or without foreign players.

But then again, under pressure is when the Pakistan Super League management thrives and we saw that during a highly successful first edition when they were subjected to undue criticism at times and they responded by achieving even more success.

Having the final in Lahore should be considered a breakthrough moment in Pakistan’s pursuit of regaining hosting privileges in the country. However, like with all the high reward outcomes, there is an exponentially higher risk involved. Pakistan’s security situation, at this point in time, is the worst it has been in years and nobody can deny the fact that Pakistan is possibly vulnerable to more attacks in the near future.

The entire country was divided with everybody coming up with all sorts of suggestions. People had suggested shifting the final to either Karachi or Islamabad, having the final without the players who do not wish to come and holding a new draft to bring in internationals who would be willing to play in Lahore. However, it has now been confirmed that the board is sticking to its original plan.

To being with, it was never a matter of whether it should be held in Karachi, Islamabad or Lahore because the entire country has been jolted by these bomb blasts and every city, for the time being, is equally vulnerable. The actual problem at hand is the international players willing or unwilling to come to Pakistan for the lone match. To date, none of the players have come out and explicitly said either yes or no and, thinking from a neutral perspective, one could safely assume that in their heads they are more inclined towards the no rather than the yes.

What would the final of an international league be like without the presence of some of the stars that have played throughout the tournament? They would be placed in a situation where they are either forced to play in a country recently shaken by a series of blasts or return home without actually completing the task.

In complete fairness, it does sound unreasonable. All those people who have come out and backed the idea of having an all local players final are nowhere to be seen during other domestic matches where the same local players are playing it out with each other.

Can we not look beyond a packed stadium in Lahore and use it to gauge the success of a league? To clarify my point, I want to see cricket return to Pakistan. I have been an avid supporter of everything that the league has achieved thus far, reiterating the fact that the PSL will only uphill once it does come back. However, the sensitivity of the matter requires everything to be perfectly in place for the league to return to Pakistan.

psl-2-pcb.jpg

Photo: PCB.

Moreover, leaving out members that have been part of the team since day one would have its consequences on the team combination and strategising as well. An all local players final would require a complete shift in plans and potential team combinations. For example, until now we have seen Islamabad United field a power-packed top order that boasts the likes of Dwayne Smith, Sam Billings, Shane Watson and Brad Haddin. Suppose these players opt not to play the final for Islamabad. The only other two batsmen that Islamabad have sitting on the bench are Asif Ali and Hussain Talat, both of whom albeit talented are rookies who might see themselves play an all-important final with little to no game time throughout the tournament.

Furthermore, Mahela Jayewardene, Kumar Sangakarra and Chris Gayle have all refused to play the final in Lahore if Karachi Kings does qualify. As a result, Karachi might even have to appoint a new captain.

While people would see that as an opportunity for the local talent to step up and take charge, the overall quality of the game would take a serious hit and the final may be remembered as a major coup in terms of the return to Pakistan, but the actual plot would be lost somewhere in between, which is playing your best team and playing the best cricket.

Moreover, if the Pakistan Super League does somehow manage to rope in players who are willing to play the final in Lahore, chances are extremely high that they will be third tier players who have remained far away from top flight cricket for most part of their careers, which again would be a compromise on the overall quality of cricket being. Names that have been making rounds over social media are disappointing to say the least. Franchises will be left with little to no team to actually allow these new players to gel in with the team and the end result could look choppy.

To sum up my point, that will be taken in a negative sense by many – the fans, the administration and anybody for that matter who may be even remotely interested in PSL should not have made playing the final in Lahore an ego issue.

For cricket to return to Pakistan the timing needs to be perfect and, at the moment, it is far from it. Need I remind that, as a cricketing nation that has been deprived of cricket for the past eight years, we cannot afford anymore slip-ups that have even the remotest of potential to take our cricket and chances of hosting international matches again another 10 years back.
