Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2019.

RETURN TO BATTLE

Team captains for PSL-2019

When the Pakistan Super League (PSL) finally kicked off in 2016, eight years after its idea was floated, the prospects of the event turning into a product of substance were uncertain at best. The sordid spot-fixing episode on the eve of the second edition could have easily derailed the mission of making the league into a world-class venture; but the smooth handling of what could have been a volatile situation, with the culprits involved suitably chastised, calmed the jitters.

The biggest gain came in 2018 when Karachi not only earned the honour of staging the grand final but also a historic three-match Twenty20 International series against the West Indies, just a week after Islamabad United had been crowned PSL champions for the second time in three years.

The massive success of those four fixtures in Karachi, the two play-off matches in Lahore, and the final of the 2017 tournament at the Gaddafi Stadium, has encouraged the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to organise no less than eight of the 34 games of the 2019 PSL season in Pakistan, with Karachi once again picked to host the final on March 17, in another effort to bring big-time international cricket back to Pakistan.

With more matches to be played on Pakistani soil, and a chance to see several local and international players up close, Pakistan Super League’s fourth season promises more action and excitement than the previous editions

Also, for the first time, the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi will be staging four matches of the coming edition while Karachi and Lahore would be hosting two matches each of their respective city sides — Karachi Kings and Lahore Qalandars.

Competition-wise, the PSL has certainly blossomed into a level where a fair number of T20 specialists across the globe are all keen to participate in the league that initially had a title sponsorship of $5million per annum for the first three seasons. This has now ballooned to a staggering $14.3million annually for the next three years from 2019 onwards. PCB hopes to earn $36 million from broadcasting and live-streaming rights from the same period in a deal which is reportedly worth 358 percent more than the previous one.

Undoubtedly, and with due respect to those international stars who have been competing on and off since the inception of this popular event, the biggest-ever signing thus far is the redoubtable AB de Villiers. Once the retired South African legend, who turns 35 on Feb 17, consented to be part of the PSL Season 4, Lahore Qalandars promptly signed him up at the players’ draft, held at Islamabad last November.

The presence of de Villiers — who is available for the franchise until March 10 — would surely inspire the Qalandars, who dubiously enough ended at the bottom of the pile in each of the three previous editions. If anyone can lift the Qalandars it will have to be de Villiers and, if somehow they fail again this time as well, the fingers will be pointed elsewhere by the ardent supporters of easily the most popular PSL team.

While de Villiers is the main attraction of the coming PSL, there are other notable changes that merit a mention here. Mohammad Hafeez, who knows a great deal about winning the title after being part of the Peshawar Zalmi squad that clinched the 2017 edition, will be captaining the Qalandars.

Islamabad United — who will be led by veteran Pakistan speedster Mohammad Sami this time — have lost the services of Misbah-ul-Haq, the ex-Pakistan skipper who has joined the ranks of Peshawar Zalmi, while the once-flamboyant Shahid Afridi will be seen for a third franchise after having represented Peshawar Zalmi (in 2016 and 2017) and Karachi Kings (2018). He will be appearing for the Multan Sultans after captain Shoaib Malik picked his former team-mate.

Former Australian captain Steve Smith was initially picked by Multan Sultans but a knee injury has forced him out. His replacement is West Indian all-rounder Andre Russell.

Colin Munro, the New Zealand left-hander, was signed by Karachi Kings the previous year, but he couldn’t play chiefly because of national duties. He will be making his debut this year. Another interesting addition to the PSL is the discarded England batsman Ian Bell who joins Islamabad United after a successful domestic T20 season in 2018 for Birmingham Bears.

Dwayne Bravo may have turned his back on the West Indies for good but the all-rounder, who skippered Trinbago Knight Riders to the Caribbean Premier League crown in 2018, will rejoin the PSL after skipping the last two seasons due to injuries. This time he’ll be seen in action for the Quetta Gladiators, who are bolstered by Sunil Narine and Umar Akmal coming from Lahore Qalandars.

Multan Sultans enter their second season under a brand new management in the Multan Consortium — run by Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf senior leader Jehangir Tareen’s son Ali — after the newest franchise’s previous owner Schon Properties was reported as a defaulter and the PCB was left with no option but to terminate the initial eight-year ownership rights signed with the Dubai-based company.

Strategically, some of the franchises have also had a change of guard in their support staff. Former Pakistan captains Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis will be seen in different roles for Karachi Kings and Islamabad United, while the legendary West Indies batsman Sir Vivian Richards will continue to mentor the two-time PSL runners-up Quetta Gladiators.

There are familiar faces in the coaching ranks of Islamabad United (Dean Jones), Karachi Kings (Mickey Arthur), Quetta Gladiators (Moin Khan), Peshawar Zalmi (Mohammad Akram) and Lahore Qalandars (Aaqib Javed) but Multan Sultans have a new head coach in the ex-South Africa spinner Johan Botha after the former Australian batsman Tom Moody expressed his unavailability due to domestic commitments.

Pakistan are the top-ranked T20 side in the ICC team rankings, but their captain, Sarfraz Ahmed, has yet to lay his hands on the glittering Swarovski trophy. Would he, the only man in the PSL history to lead the same franchise over the four editions, be lucky this time around as he leads Quetta? We’ll find out soon enough.

Emerging talent
As usual, the most fascinating feature of the PSL is the emerging talent. Hasan Ali became an overnight hero from the 2016 edition; and then came Shadab Khan, the young leggie who has grown in stature as one of the most talented young cricketers on the international stage. Shaheen Shah Afridi has graduated to the senior team after a sensational five-for burst for the Qalandars last year in Dubai; and Hussain Talat is doing his best to command a regular berth in the Pakistan T20 team.

Mohammad Hassaan Khan, Usama Mir, Mohammad Irfan Jr and Ibtisam Sheikh are still searching for the elusive breakthrough to make the Pakistan team, but their dream coming true is probably round the corner.

This year a few young guns will be trying their luck to make the grade. Saif Badar made his PSL debut for Multan Sultans, but the young bloke hardly got a proper opportunity. It’s a shame that the franchises have overlooked not just him but also Khushdil Shah, despite both enjoying decent seasons. Another glaring omission is young opener Zeeshan Malik.

Opener Rizwan Hussain, spinner Umar Khan and 18-year-old paceman Mohammad Hasnain are some of the new faces but their credentials will only be documented if they get the chance to showcase their genuine worth.

On the other hand, there are a couple of inclusions which smack of nepotism in selection matters. How did Jaahid Ali, who hails from a well-to-do family, get a PSL contract for Karachi Kings despite far from being a T20 specialist with a solitary appearance in the format?

Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2019 begins on February 14 and the Pakistani cricket fraternity is making sure they are up to date with the latest happenings and events.

ProPakistani has prepared a list of local players who could have made their way to the PSL franchises.

Let’s have a look.

Fawad Alam

Islamabad face Lahore as PSL rolls into action

DUBAI: Defending champions Islamabad United will take on Lahore Qalandars to begin season 4 of the HBL Pakistan Super League at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium here on Thursday night after a glittering opening ceremony.

Arguably, the latest edition will be biggest as it will have the added attraction of former South Africa captain A.B. de Villiers, arguably one of the most destructive batsmen of the modern generation, marking his PSL debut.

Not only de Villiers’ presence will add charm to the tournament, his sentiments on playing a part in revival of international cricket in Pakistan will give a tremendous boost to the efforts of the PCB in convincing teams and international players to return to the country.

“I am delighted to confirm that I will represent Lahore Qalandars in front of our home crowds on March 9 and 10 during the this PSL,” de Villiers said recently. “I am fully aware that cricket is like a second religion in Pakistan. I still remember the support and appreciation we received in 2007 [when South Africa toured Pakistan].

“Furthermore, I feel I have a role to play in helping international cricket return to Pakistan. These have been some of the motivating factors for me to return to Lahore.

“I sympathize with the people of Pakistan because they have been cricket-starved for no fault of theirs, but I am optimistic that the days are not too far when international cricket will return to Pakistan and the stadia will once again be packed with crowds.”

People have started to count the days when they could see one of the cleanest hitters in the game in their backyard. De Villiers playing in Pakistan will be one of the many charms of PSL 4 and Lahore’s matches at home will be on an astronomical demand.

But, de Villiers is not the only start attraction of the tournament. There are Shane Watson, Andre Russell, Luke Ronchi, Dwayne Bravo, Rilee Rossouw, Fawad Ahmed, Daren Sammy, Kieron Pollard, Liam Dawson, Dawid Malan, Chris Jordan, Dan Christian, Sikander Raza, Anton Devcich, Brendon Taylor, Samit Patel and host of other international names lined up to entertain the crowds during the Feb 14-March 17 T20 extravaganza.

Moreover, some most exciting players on the Twenty20 horizons are also on show.

Nepal spinner Sandeep Lamichhane, Australia’s Aaron Summers and exciting performers from England’s T20 Blast, Laurie Evans, Philip Salt and Liam Livingstone will also add to the PSL charms. Evans was the top run-getter in the T20 Blast while Summers hit 150 kph speed in Australian summer matches and was part of Hobart Hurricane in this season’s Big Bash.

Pakistan’s own players have a point to prove in this World Cup year with head coach head coach Mickey Arthur announcing that good performances in the PSL can get a player a ticket to the World Cup.

So, discards such as Ahmed Shehzad, Umar Akmal and Wahab Riaz should pull up their socks and give their best in the coming competition to force the selectors to consider their credentials for the 50-over mega event in England and Wales.

On the other hand, youngsters like hard-hitting opener Rizwan Hussain, Sameen Gul, Hassaan Khan, Amad Butt et al, have the chance of their lives to fulfill their dreams of playing for Pakistan through some good performances over the next four weeks.

The PSL is one platform which has been the harbinger for the return of international cricket to Pakistan. The second edition in 2017 saw the final played in Lahore, while last year three matches were held, including the final. This year eight matches will be staged in the country — five in Karachi, including March 17 final, and three in Lahore.

It’s is impossible to guess who will be champions this time because T20 cricket is highly unpredictable. A good performance with the bat, a burst of wickets or a good fielding — just like everyone saw in the recent T20 International when South Africa’ David Miller held four catches and made two run-outs to seal victory over Pakistan.

All six franchises are well balanced, highly motivated and best prepared to take the crystal trophy which is a representation of the Pakistani flag in all its sparkling beauty, with crystals one by one rising up as a dazzling green beam and shows off the majestic Shooting Star at the pinnacle.

From the most vibrant franchise Lahore Qalandars to the newest team Multan Sultans to the two-time champions Islamabad United and 2017 winners Peshawar Zalmi, to the most enthusiastic Karachi Kings to the unassuming twice runners-up Quetta Gladiators, every team promises tooth-to-nail fight for the honours.

Remember one-run wins — twice between Quetta and Peshawar in 2016 and 2017 — and two Super Over finishes — both involving Lahore in 2018 — left the spectators on the edges of their seats.

Islamabad vs Lahore: Two-time champs take on three-time bottom dwellers in PSL 4 opener
February 14, 2019

Luke Ronchi was a major factor when Lahore and Islamabad had last clashed. — File

If there is any franchise that deserves to catch a break, it is, without a doubt, Lahore Qalandars. The Fawad Rana-owned franchise's troubles through the first three seasons are known to all and sundry.

As old and way-past-his-prime as he may be, the Proteas legend is still a draw and a potent weapon for the Qalandars to have in their repertoire.

The Qalandars also have a new captain this year in the form of Mohammad Hafeez, whose leadership as well as all-rounder capabilities should, at the very least, enable them to finish anywhere but last.

United, on the other hand, are in a difficult position ─ they've lost Misbah Ul Haq, and while the 44-year-old is no longer a major contributor to the game, he is still useful because of his undeniable leadership qualities.

Enter Mohammad Sami to fill his worn-out shoes. But there is a question mark over how he will lead the side considering he has neither been a captain at major events, nor does he come off as skipper material.

Furthermore, Islamabad's squad ─ as it is currently composed ─ is the thinnest in the league. With several players on the wrong side of the 30, fatigue could become a factor for them later on in the tournament.

Head-to-head

The two teams' contrasting fortunes have fans believing that their head-to-head will be completely tilted towards United. It is, but it's not as bad as it could have been.

In six PSL clashes, United have won four times, while the Qalandars just hold two victories. Both those victories came in 2016 when United were suffering from the infamous second season syndrome, and would have finished bottom of the table had it not been for the Qalandars.

In 2018, the Qalandars had whatever is the opposite of the luck of the Irish. In their first encounter, they had United pinned from the start and needed just 122 to win.

In a comical meltdown, they lost their last 8 wickets for just 44 runs and ended up losing the match in the Super Over.

In the second 2018 clash, the Qalandars posted a decent 164-run target. Only this time, Luke Ronchi ─ who was out on duck the last time ─ went on a cruel, merciless rampage the Qalandars couldn't recover from.

Squads

Lahore: Mohammad Hafeez (c), Agha Salman, Aizaz Cheema, Corey Anderson, Carlos Brathwaite AP Devcich, AB de Villiers, Fakhar Zaman, Gauhar Ali, Haris Rauf, Haris Sohail, Hassan Khan, Sandeep Lamichhane, Mohammad Imran, Rahat Ali, Saad Ali, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Sohail Akhtar, Brendon Taylor, Umair Masood, G Viljoen, David Wiese, Yasir Shah

Islamabad: Mohammad Sami (c), Amad Butt, Asif Ali, Ian Bell, Cameron Delport, Faheem Ashraf, Hussain Talat, Muhammad Musa Bowler, Nasir Nawaz, Wayne Parnell, Samit Patel, Rizwan Hussain, Luke Ronchi, Rumman Raees, Sahibzada Farhan, Phil Salt, Shadab Khan, Waqas Maqsood, Zafar Gohar, Zahir Khan

Prediction

The 2019 Qalandars just have too much firepower up top. They'll get it done ─ barring a Ronchi rampage, of course.
